Chapter 51

“Avelyn!” Jayden came and sat down on the sofa beside Avelyn. “How are you now?” Avelyn smiled. “It’s getting better. The doctor told me not to overwork my legs and take rests frequently.” “Hmm…I can see that you’re resting well” “What is with that tone?” “Aren’t you bored?” Avelyn shrugged, and looked down. “I guess sometimes. It’s a bit lonely when no one’s around to talk.” “Why? Hayden is at home most of the time. Doesn’t he spend time with you?” Avelyn scratched the back of her neck, and pursed her lips. “Yeah, a lot, in fact. But I can’t discuss everything with him, you know?” “Aren’t you and Hayden quite friendly now?” “Yes, we are. But…” Avelyn shrugged. “There are some things that I don’t want to share with him.” “Hmm. I understand. Didn’t Nathan visit you?” Avelyn shook her head. “No, he’s busy. Since I’m not there to manage things, his workload has doubled.” “It’s not like you did any work there” Avelyn hit Jayden’s arm. “What are you saying? I admit that I didn’t like it, but I did do some work!” “Ha ha! I was just kidding. You take everything seriously.” “Of course I will take things seriously! You hurt my pride.” “Didn’t he call you?” “He did! But it’s not like meeting in person.” Jayden tapped his finger on the bed. He seemed to be thinking hard. “Shall we go somewhere?” “Where?” “For a change. You must be bored after spending almost a month in this house.” “Ok let’s go!” Avelyn was so excited she forgot about her leg and stood up hurriedly. “Ow!” She grabbed her thigh, just above the wound. Jayden gasped. “Are you alright?” “It’s nothing. This happens when I move suddenly.” Jayden hit her head lightly. “Be careful! We can’t have you wounded forever!” ………….. The sun was descending in the horizon slowly. The world had turned yellow. Avelyn and Jayden were sitting on two chairs, near the edge of a cliff. The wind blew from everywhere and messed Avelyn’s hair which she tried so hard to keep away from her face. Jayden took another sandwich from the basket, and began munching on it. “It’s a lot calm here, isn’t it?” Avelyn looked at Jayden, and nodded her head. “Yes! I like this place.” A few moments of silence took its place between them. Only the wind and the sound of the birds managed to break it. Avelyn watched the clouds passing by the mountains surrounding them. “So?” She heard Jayden’s voice. “So?” “What do you think about Hayden?” Avelyn’s face looked surprised, and flustered at the same time. “About Hayden?” “Yeah.” “Why are you asking this?” Jayden shrugged. “I just wanted to know.” Avelyn turned her head back to the mountains ahead. “He is nice.” A small smile crept on her lips. “Just nice?” Hayden pocked her arm. “Well…..not ‘just’ nice. I mean, I like him. As a person.” “Hmm…” Jayden nodded his head. “I know you like him, obviously!” “Hey! Not like that. I like him as much as I like you and Nathan!” “So is he on the same level with us now? I feel attacked.” He touched his chest and looked offended at Avelyn. “No! I mean he is just a person I like! Nothing more, nothing less!” “Really?” “Obviously!” “I just wanted to say this to you. That’s why I asked what you think about him….” Jayden scratched his knee. “It’s just that… he is a mafia, you know? Well, I am too, and you and Nathan were too. What I want to tell you is, that you should be careful. He has power and money both. I’m not indicating that he is a bad person. But… if he ever decides to do something to you, or something like that, both me and Nathan would stand by your side, but we won’t be able to stand such a force for long.” He looked at confused Avelyn. “What I’m saying is, if you both get into a misunderstanding or something, be wise to make things clear.” “Why would we have misunderstandings?” “Because….” Jayden bit his lip. “I think he cares a bit too much about you, and sometimes I see that in you too. So, just saying in advance. You both are stubborn, and I want to see that you too get along well.”
