Silent storm 2

623 Words
The soft sound of cooing filled the chamber as the Empress cradled her newborn son, his tiny fists curled against her silk robes. His breathing was gentle, barely stirring the fabric on her chest. She leaned in and kissed his warm cheeks, her voice trembling as she whispered. “Baby… I know you can’t hear me yet, but I promise you—no matter what, I’ll keep you safe from all this mess.” The child gave a tiny sigh, curling closer into her warmth, unaware of the storm gathering outside the palace walls. “Let’s send him away from here,” the Emperor suddenly said. The words dropped into the room like thunder. The Empress turned sharply to him, her expression frozen in disbelief. “What did you just say?” Her voice cracked. “He’s just a few days old… You want to send him away?” Tears welled up in her eyes, her arms instinctively tightening around her son. “How can we guarantee he’ll even be safe out there? Do you know what you’re asking of me?” Emperor Yu Shenlong took a deep breath, his jaw tense with the weight of the decision. “If he stays here, he’s in danger. You both are. That man—Wei Long—is capable of anything. He has nothing left to lose.” He stepped forward, his eyes heavy with pain. “What if… I send you both away for a time? Just until I finish this. You can stay with him, watch over him yourself. Once the danger passes, I’ll bring you back.” The Empress shook her head, stepping back. “No. That’s even worse.” “The palace is the safest place,” she argued. “Here, you know where we are, you can protect us. Out there? We’ll be exposed. What if Wei Long has already planted someone close to us? Someone who knows our movements?” Yu Shenlong was silent, her words slicing through his confidence like a blade. He paced slowly, his robe brushing the cold marble floor, then stopped and turned to her with a sigh of realization. “You’re right. I… I hadn’t thought of that.” He stepped closer, gently placing a hand on her shoulder. “Then I’ll stay close. From now on, I’ll be by your side. Always.” He looked down at the child, sleeping so peacefully despite the tension that thickened the air around him. “Don’t give him to any maid. Not even for a moment. You must prepare his food yourself—or at least have one of your most trusted maids do it.” The Empress nodded, eyes still locked on her child. “I’ll assign one of my personal guards to the kitchen,” the Emperor continued. “He’ll monitor everything—every delivery, every hand that touches your food or the baby’s. If there’s any sign of poison or tampering, we’ll know instantly.” “Thank you,” the Empress whispered, a faint trace of relief in her voice. She moved to the crib and carefully laid the prince down, watching his chest rise and fall. “He’s so small… yet already a target for hatred and revenge.” Yu Shenlong placed an arm around her shoulder. “Then we fight for him. We protect him. He’s our future. And I will not let the sins of war destroy our family.” Outside, the wind howled against the palace walls as if echoing the danger creeping closer. But inside, in that small room lit with lanterns and love, a silent vow was made: no matter the cost, they would protect their son—even if the empire had to bleed for it.
