The Long-Awaited Heir
Years ago, shortly after Emperor Yu Shenlong married his beloved consort, Lady Bai Hua, joy filled the palace. But that joy was quickly overshadowed by whispers and pressure — for five long years, the royal couple remained childless.
“Why has the Empress not conceived?” the ministers muttered behind closed doors.
“Perhaps the Emperor should take another wife, for five long years, there has been not a single cry of a child. How does the Emperor plan to continue his bloodline. We need a prince as soon as possible,” others suggested openly, emboldened by tradition.
But the Emperor would not hear of it.
“She is my heart,” he told his council firmly. “I will wait, even if it takes a lifetime.”
The Empress bore the pressure in silence, offering daily prayers at the ancestral shrine. The palace priests were summoned, fortune-tellers consulted, and still—nothing.
Until one crisp autumn morning, the royal physician burst into the court.
“Your Majesty,” he cried, breathless with emotion. “The Empress… she is with child!”
The Emperor’s eyes widened. “Truly?” he whispered.
The entire palace erupted in celebration. Bells were rung, lotus lanterns lit across the capital. The people rejoiced — finally, an heir was on the way.
And now, nine months later, the entire empire held its breath.
The palace was cloaked in silence, broken only by the soft rustling of silk robes and hushed footsteps of maids moving through the grand corridors. The golden sun rose over the eastern towers, casting its warm glow on the intricate carvings that adorned the walls of the royal court.
In the Empress’s chamber, soft incense wafted through the air as Lady Mei, the palace midwife, clutched the Empress’s hand.
“Your Majesty, breathe… yes, just like that,” she urged gently.
The Empress, drenched in sweat, gritted her teeth through the pain. Her once delicate features were strained, but determination burned in her eyes.
“Is… he coming?” she whispered between contractions.
“Yes, Your Majesty. The prince is nearly here,” Lady Mei reassured, glancing at the attending maids, who were trembling with anticipation.
Moments later, the sharp cry of a newborn pierced the still air.
“It’s a boy!” Lady Mei cried out, lifting the infant with reverence. “A strong and healthy prince!”
Cheers erupted outside the chamber. Word spread like wildfire throughout the palace: The Empress has given birth to a son!
Far away on the northern front, Emperor Yu Shenlong stood atop a hill, his crimson cloak fluttering in the wind. His armor was stained with battle and his face wore the weight of a thousand burdens.
A royal messenger knelt before him, breathless from the journey. “Your Majesty… the Empress… she has delivered a son.”
The emperor froze for a moment, then slowly removed his helmet, revealing a mix of disbelief and joy. “A son…?” he echoed.
“Yes, Your Majesty. The child is strong, just as the oracle predicted.”
The emperor’s eyes glistened. “He shall be called Yu Chen,” he declared. “A gift from the heavens… born for greatness.”
But behind that joy lurked darker news.
Not far from the kingdom, deep in the shadowed valleys of the east, General Wei Xuan sat in his war-torn chamber, staring at the bloodied crest of his fallen wife’s robe. His face, once full of life, was now hollow with grief and fury.
“They took her from me…” he murmured.
“Wei Xuan,” a loyal lieutenant called from the doorway, “what now? We have lost the war.”
“We may have lost the battle,” he replied coldly, “but the emperor took my heart… and for that, I will take his.”
He turned to the remaining members of his inner circle—men hardened by war, loyal to death.
“We cannot defeat Yu Shenlong with swords alone. We must strike where it hurts most—his lineage.”
He stood and slammed his hand against the table. “Swear it! Swear to avenge my wife!”
“I swear!” they echoed in unison, fists over hearts.
The enemy’s oath was made: to ensure that Emperor Yu Shenlong joy would turn into his deepest sorrow.
And so, while the kingdom celebrated the birth of a future emperor, shadows stirred in silence.
What no one knew was that little Yu Chen’s fate would be entangled not just with crowns and courts—but with betrayal, vengeance, and a girl whose destiny would change the empire forever.
