The corporate building was under attack, and when I scrambled out of the malfunctioning elevator, a sharp sheet of metal sliced straight through my chest.

Warm blood gushed out in thick, steady streams, and I was desperate for immediate medical care.

But my husband, Lucian Thorne, had pulled the entire onsite medical team away just because his secretary, Victoria Bennett, had caught a cold.

I pressed one hand tight against my bleeding wound, grabbed a fistful of Lucian's suit jacket with the other, and screamed at the top of my lungs, "Get the doctors back here to treat me now! If anything happens to me, my family will tear you apart!"

He just let out a dismissive little chuckle. We'd been married for seven years, and he'd always thought I was an orphan. I'd never bothered to correct him.

The truth was, my family were rogue werewolves exiled from our pack.

My mother, Aurora Cross, had slaughtered nine seasoned hunters in a single fight. My father, Kael Cross, had once shifted into his wolf form and scared several humans to death on the spot. And my older brother Gabriel Cross? He was a raving maniac who lost all sense the second he caught a whiff of blood.

"Alright, I get you're upset. There's no need to make up crazy stories to mess with me," Lucian said, yanking his suit out of my grip.

"Seven years we've been married, and I've never once looked down on you for having no family. Even if you hate Victoria that much, this is not the time to throw a tantrum.

"If your family was really that powerful, you wouldn't be here fighting Victoria over a few doctors, would you?"

Lucian brushed the wrinkles out of his suit and ordered every last member of the medical team to leave with him.

I watched the hem of his jacket slip right through my fingers, and crushing despair squeezed my chest so tight I almost suffocated.

I used every last bit of strength I had left to call my father, then sent him my exact location.

The second the line clicked to life, I knew it without a shadow of a doubt. Lucian was going to pay for his stupid, callous mistake with a brutal, messy death.

I used every last bit of strength I had left to call my father, then sent him my exact location. The second the line clicked to life, I knew it without a shadow of a doubt. Lucian was going to pay for his stupid, callous mistake with a brutal, messy death. Lucian had never once asked about my family. As far as he was concerned, I was an abandoned orphan who grew up in a welfare home. My threat was nothing more than petty jealousy towards him. A white-hot searing pain ripped through my chest, and blood soaked straight through my shirt, spreading in a dark, damp patch. Lucian left his driver, Jason Reed, to keep an eye on me. Jason was his most trusted man, and he'd been assigned to shadow me for all seven years of our marriage. I glanced down at the new text from my brother. Gabriel: Hang in there, Elena. We just crossed into human territory. We'll be there in two hours. I knew my injury well enough. There was no way I'd hold on that long. "Jason, help me, please..." I called out softly, reaching up to tug at his arm. Jason's gaze stayed cold and sharp. He just glanced at me once and shook his head. "I'm sorry, Ms. Cross, but all the doctors are currently treating Miss Bennett," he said flatly. "Boss said your injury isn't life-threatening. You'll be fine. "There's nothing to worry about." He yanks his hand away. I watch blood seep slowly through my fingers, and my whole heart goes ice-cold. How the hell could Lucian ever think I was safe? I let out a bitter, snorting laugh. Back when I was trapped in that broken-down elevator, blowing up his phone like a madwoman, he was too busy sitting in a salon with Victoria, watching her get her hair done. Like he'd give a single damn about my injuries now, of all times? My phone buzzed again. I glanced at the photo Dad sent. They were crossing a set of train tracks, and a stray dog dropped dead from fright just at the sight of them. Mom's message read right below the photo. Aurora: Haven't seen any humans in ages. "Hurry! I can't hold on much longer!" I grind out the words and fire off a voice message to the family group chat. Right after I hit Send, the phone clattered to the floor. I squeezed my eyes shut, gasping for air. The iron shard in my chest throbbed so hard I could barely focus, while the device buzzed over and over beside me. I didn't have an ounce of strength left to check what the messages said. Jason frowned and bent down to pick up the phone. He muttered, "Ms. Cross, if you'd just swallowed your pride and begged Victoria, you never would have ended up in this mess. "If you want a doctor right now, calling Victoria is your best bet." The second his eyes landed on the screen, his eyebrows shot up, and his face twisted in shock. He snapped his head up to stare at me. "Ms. Cross… you're a werewolf?!"
