Chapter1:Shadows of two lives
Chapter One – Shadows of Two Lives
The hum of the refrigerator was louder than the surrounding voices. Selene’s hands moved with instinct, scanning barcodes, sliding groceries across the worn counter. Another beep, another transaction, another plastic smile plastered on her face as though it could keep the frustration at bay.
“Didn’t you hear me?” the man in front of her snapped. He was middle-aged, belly straining against his shirt, and already annoyed that she wasn’t moving fast enough.
Selene blinked, forcing her voice to stay soft. “I’m sorry, sir." Did you need paper bags instead of plastic?”
“Obviously.” He muttered something under his breath about useless clerks as she replaced the bags.
Selene swallowed the sting, like she always did. This job wasn’t about pride. It wasn’t even about survival half the time. It was about clinging to the little thread that kept her from falling completely into nothingness.
When her shift finally ended, the weight of exhaustion pressed against her shoulders like bricks. She peeled off the green apron, her reflection in the grimy mirror making her sigh. Shadows lived under her eyes. Her hair, once glossy and vibrant, was tied into a tired knot. She looked older than twenty-two.
Outside, the evening air carried the faint smell of exhaust and fried food from the street vendors. She pulled out her phone. Three missed calls. All Ethan.
Her thumb hesitated before dialing back.
“Where the hell have you been?” His voice, sharp and impatient, filled her ear.
“Working,” she murmured.
“You can’t even answer your damn phone?" I’ve been sitting here waiting, missing you. You’re supposed to care about me, Selene. What kind of girlfriend does this?”
Her throat tightened. “I’ll pick something up on the way.”
“Better. Don’t be late. He hung up.
Selene lowered the phone slowly. A part of her wanted to scream, to throw the damn thing into traffic, but she didn’t. Because Ethan had been her first love. Because when she had nowhere else to go, he gave her a roof. Because her heart was stubborn and stupid enough to remember the warmth of his early kisses instead of the sting of his current cruelty.
The apartment was dim and stifling when she returned, the peeling wallpaper and the smell of stale smoke making her chest ache. Ethan lounged on the couch, a video game controller in his hand, his focus on the screen.
Selene changed quietly into an old T-shirt and sat at the edge of the bed in the small adjoining room. Her hands fidgeted with the hem of the fabric until a familiar voice cut through her thoughts, remembering the details of her earliest conversation with Mina, her best friend.
“You’re gonna waste away in here,” Mina said.
Selene looked up to see her best friend leaning on the counter, arms crossed, eyes sparkling with mischief. Mina was everything Selene wasn’t carefree, unafraid.
Selene managed a tired smile. “What are you doing here?”
“Checking on my stubborn best friend,” Mina said. “And, maybe… giving her an escape plan.” She whispered.
Selene groaned. “Mina…”
“Hear me out,” Mina said.“You remember the club work I told you about last month.”I got accepted . Just one night a week to test it out. Selene, the money is insane. Tips alone are more than you make here in a week.
Selene shook her head. “That’s not me.”
“Not yet,” Mina corrected, smirking. “You’d kill it there." You’ve got the body, the face, and more fire than you admit. And at least there, when men stare at you, you get paid for it instead of being insulted like at this grocery store.
The words struck harder than Selene wanted to admit. She pictured her manager scolding her for being “too slow,” the customers rolling their eyes, Ethan draining her paycheck in a single night at the casino.
“I can’t,” she whispered, though it sounded more like she was convincing herself than Mina.
Mina leaned closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “Just come with me Friday." Watch. Nothing more. If you hate it, you leave. No strings attached.”
Selene’s chest tightened. She thought of rent. Of the endless cycle of exhaustion. Of Ethan’s indifference.
“I’ll think about it,” she said.
Mina grinned, knowing that was as good as a yes.
Across the city, the air was different—cool, filtered, perfumed with wealth.
Adrian Kane sat at the head of a glass table, skyscrapers glittering behind him. His executives spoke in careful tones, presenting numbers, projections, strategies. He listened in silence, his expression unreadable, a predator measuring the worth of his prey.
“The offshore accounts show a nine percent increase,” one said, voice trembling slightly.
“Casinos?” Adrian’s question was clipped, precise.
“Steady, sir. Your partnership with Mr. Roman has ensured dominance in that market.
Adrian gave a single nod. Roman. Vanessa’s father. A man he respected as much as he mistrusted. Their empire of casinos was unshakable—unless either side turned rival. That, Adrian would not allow.
The boardroom had emptied like a tide pulling back, leaving only the echo of closed doors and the faint scent of polished mahogany. Adrian Kane rose from his chair, loosened his tie, and walked toward the elevator with the measured stride of a man who owned more than just buildings — he owned every perception of him, every whispered fear in his competitors’ minds.
His private suite awaited, softly lit, a haven of velvet shadows and gold. And Vanessa was already there, as always, waiting with the kind of confidence only wealth and beauty could afford.
Her dress shimmered in the dim light, silk hugging every curve. The diamonds at her wrists and throat caught the glow like a constellation of temptation. Her heels clicked softly on the marble as she rose to greet him, lips curved in a playful, expectant smile.
“You’re late,” she said, voice teasing but with a tremor of longing that betrayed her emotional investment. “I almost believed that your empire had swallowed you whole.”
Adrian closed the distance in two steps, the magnetic pull between them unmistakable. His hand found her waist, steady and commanding, drawing her close. He lowered his mouth to hers, slow and deliberate, a kiss that promised everything she wanted — devotion, attention, desire — even though none of it was genuine beyond the surface.
“Nothing could keep me from you,” he murmured against her lips, his voice low, velvet-wrapped command.
Vanessa leaned into him, her fingers threading through his hair, holding him as if she might tether the man to her heart. “You always say that,” she whispered, voice trembling in delight. “But I see the hours you pour into meetings, the empire you build… and I can’t help but feel like a shadow next to it sometimes.”
Adrian tilted his head, brushing his thumb across her cheek with practiced affection. “You are never a shadow." You are the light I choose to see.
Her chest swelled. Every word, every gesture, reinforced her belief that she was adored, that Adrian was hers completely. She let herself melt against him, her body arching into his with unrestrained hunger.
“Adrian…” she whispered, lips grazing the line of his jaw, her voice thick with desire. “I want you." All of you.”
He smiled faintly, a predator aware of every heartbeat. His hands slid along her spine, holding her close, but his movements were deliberate, measured. He kissed her neck, shoulders, and finally, her lips again — deep, intoxicating, consuming. Vanessa’s soft moans filled the suite, echoing in the gilded silence.
“You make it too easy,” he murmured, voice husky, letting her believe that the fire between them was mutual. “Too tempting to resist.”
Vanessa’s hands roamed freely now, clutching his shoulders, tugging him closer, as if she could pull the secret from him with desire alone. Adrian let her think she had him, that he was lost in her, when in truth, his mind was elsewhere — always calculating, always aware.
Her eyes met his, searching for reassurance. “Promise me you’ll never leave me,” she breathed.
He cupped her face, thumb brushing over her lips, his gaze piercing. “Never". Not unless you let me go.”
She smiled, satisfied, convinced of the truth in his words. She didn’t know that her love was a shield Adrian wielded, a way to control the delicate balance between loyalty, power, and her father’s empire.
They sank onto the velvet sofa together, bodies entwined, hands exploring with practiced rhythm. Every kiss, every whispered word, every brush of skin was enough to make Vanessa believe she held his heart completely. She didn’t see the calculations behind his eyes, the deliberate restraint he maintained, the knowledge that passion could be faked as easily as a smile in a boardroom.
And just as the heat between them reached a peak, a sound cut through the suite — a faint notification from Adrian’s secure device, sharp and urgent. His eyes flicked toward it, unreadable, the shadow of a storm crossing his face.
Vanessa, oblivious to the shift, leaned into him again. “What is it?”
He silenced her with a single finger to her lips. “Nothing." For now.”
But the message on the screen was anything but nothing. It was a warning, a ripple that threatened to shake the delicate world they inhabited, a secret that could unravel everything .
