Noah inhaled deeply, running a hand through his hair. Olivia stood firm, arms crossed, her eyes demanding nothing but the truth.
"Chicago wasn’t something I planned on hiding from you, Liv," he said, his voice low but steady. "It just... it’s complicated."
Olivia’s patience was wearing thin. "Stop saying that. Just tell me what happened."
Noah hesitated for a beat, then finally said, "I was engaged."
Silence. Olivia felt as though the ground had disappeared beneath her feet.
"Engaged?" she echoed, blinking as the word sank in. "To who?"
"Her name was Cassandra," Noah admitted. "It was years ago. We met in college, fell hard, fast. We thought we had it all figured out. Until we didn’t."
Olivia’s heart pounded. "Why didn’t it work out?"
Noah exhaled. "She wanted a life I wasn’t ready for. She wanted stability, a family, the whole picture-perfect life. And I... I wasn’t ready to be that person for her. So I left."
"You left?" Olivia repeated, her voice sharper than she intended. "You ran?"
"I thought I was doing the right thing," he said, regret etched into his face. "I didn’t want to trap her in a relationship where I couldn’t give her everything she wanted. But looking back, I should have handled it differently."
Olivia shook her head, absorbing his words. "And now someone’s trying to use that against you."
Noah nodded. "It looks that way. But I swear, Liv, I haven’t spoken to Cassandra in years. Whoever sent that message is digging into my past to create doubt between us."
She studied him, searching for any trace of deception. "Do you still love her?"
His answer was immediate. "No. The only person I want—have ever truly wanted—is you."
Her heart warred with her mind. Trust had always been fragile between them, and now it hung in the balance.
"I need time to process this, Noah," she admitted.
He nodded. "I understand. Take all the time you need. Just know that I’m not that guy anymore. I won’t run from you."
---
The next day, Olivia met up with her best friend, Claire, at their favorite café. Claire listened intently as Olivia recounted everything.
"So, he was engaged?" Claire asked, stirring her latte. "That’s big, Liv."
"I know," Olivia sighed. "And now I don’t know what to do."
"Do you still trust him?"
Olivia hesitated. "I want to. But this whole situation makes me feel like I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop."
Claire took a sip of her drink before responding. "You’ve got two choices. You can run, protect yourself from potential hurt. Or you can trust that the man in front of you isn’t the same one from his past."
Olivia bit her lip, mulling over her friend’s words.
---
That night, Noah knocked on Olivia’s door. She hesitated before opening it.
"Liv," he said softly, his eyes pleading. "Please don’t shut me out."
She took a deep breath. "I’m scared, Noah."
"I know," he admitted. "But I’m not going anywhere. No more running."
She looked at him for a long moment before stepping aside, letting him in.
Maybe trust was a risk. But maybe, just maybe, Noah was worth it.
