CHAPTER ONE
Another whip landed on my back, a grunt escaped my lips, while I held the soil under me as my last string of hope. Another one came again, I could feel my skin tearing on the lash. A tear escaped my eyes falling down to my cheeks. All this because I broke a vase. What did I expect a slave like me to be saved from all destroying something that was meaningless. Yet our pack alpha disagreed “f*****g useless, a wolfless slave breaking a vase that is worth more than her.” He seethed “ Whip her and remind her where she belongs” Another whip landed on my back this time a disgruntled sob escaped my throat. Then suddenly it all stopped. By this time my consciousness had started to waver when the alpha held my he harshly making my wince as more tears fell down my cheeks. “ This is the last time slave, one more your so called mistake…I might just hang you while I f**k you senselessly ” he chuckled darkly. I just knelt, my mind spinning while I felt faint. This wasn't the first time he had threatened, it wouldn't be the last time. My eyes wandered to his Luna, Lora behind him. If glares could kill I would be six feet under a long time ago. She hated how her mate, her husband kept his eyes on me. Hell being attracted to me. She has always made my life miserable. “ Throw her in the dungeon,” Alpha Rane commanded. Rough hands grabbed my arms immediately, forcing me to my feet. A sharp cry escaped my lips as pain shot through my torn back. My knees nearly gave out beneath me, but the guards dragged me forward anyway like I weighed nothing. The courtyard blurred around me. Blood, Dust, Laughter. I could barely hear anything over the ringing in my ears. “Pathetic thing,” one of the guards muttered, shoving me harder. I stumbled violently, my bare feet scraping against stone. A shaky breath left my lips as I tried to stay conscious. “Don’t fall. If you fall, they’ll kick you again.” The thought alone kept me moving. Behind me, Luna Lora’s cold voice rang out.“Make sure she gets no food tonight.” Of course.I lowered my gaze silently, swallowing the bitterness clawing up my throat. The dungeon entrance came into view moments later—dark, damp, and reeking of mold and old blood. Fear curled inside my stomach instantly.I hated it there The darkness, The rats., The screams from neighboring cells late at night, The memories. One of the guards unlocked the heavy iron door before throwing me inside carelessly. My body slammed against the cold floor. Pain exploded through my ribs. The door shut with a loud clang. I lay there trembling for several seconds, too weak to move. My breathing came out uneven while blood slowly stained the stone beneath me. This was my life, A slave. Beaten when they pleased, Starved when they wished, Treated worse than the animals they kept in their stables. Sometimes I wondered why they kept me alive at all. Maybe suffering was more entertaining than death. I slowly curled into myself against the freezing dungeon wall, ignoring the sting spreading across my back. The cold floor beneath me felt strangely familiar now. Almost comforting, like I belonged here. A shaky breath escaped my lips as I closed my eyes. And like always, the memories came back. I was only six when everything was destroyed. Back then, my father was the Gamma of the Ashtray Pack. Strong, Loyal, Respected. At least… he used to be. I still remembered his smile whenever he carried me on his shoulders through the pack grounds while my mother laughed beside us, Before everything became blood. Before fear became my entire world. It happened during a gathering. The former Alpha—Rane’s father—had dragged a young omega girl into the hall while everyone watched. She couldn’t have been older than sixteen. She was crying, Begging even. Nobody moved to help her. Nobody except my father. He stepped between them. I still remembered the deadly silence that followed. “You forget your place, Gamma,” the Alpha had growled. But my father didn’t back down.“He’s mated,” my father had said coldly. “The Moon Goddess forbids this.” The Alpha didn’t care, Powerful men rarely did. That night changed everything. By morning, my father was labeled a traitor. A betrayer of the pack, An enemy. We ran before sunrise. I remembered my mother shaking while packing clothes. I remembered my father carrying me through the forest as wolves chased us for days. We never rested. Never stopped moving. But eventually… They found us. A broken sob caught in my throat at the memory. It was raining that night. I remembered the smell of blood mixing with wet earth. The warriors surrounded us near the cliffs beyond the northern woods. My father fought like a man possessed. I had never seen someone covered in so much blood still standing. But there were too many of them. Far too many.“Take Hazel and run!” he screamed at my mother. I remembered my mother grabbing me desperately, tears streaming down her face while my father held the warriors back. That was the last time I saw him alive. We hid inside a hollow tree deep in the forest while screams echoed through the night. I was crying, my mother was shaking. Then suddenly… Silence. The kind of silence that tells you someone died. My mother knew it too. I still remembered the broken sound she made. A sound no child should ever hear from their mother. Hours later, they found us. My mother shoved me deeper into the hollow tree before covering my mouth with trembling hands.“No matter what happens,” she whispered through tears, “you stay quiet, Hazel.” I didn’t understand why she was crying like that. I do now. The warriors dragged her out first. She fought them, screamed at them , even begged them not to touch me. And then— My eyes squeezed shut tightly as tears slid down my cheeks.I still remembered the sound of the blade. The sound of her body hitting the ground.I bit my lip hard enough to taste blood. I had stayed hidden for hours after they left. Too scared to move, Too scared to breathe. But eventually they came back, and they found me. “A wolfless pup?” one of them sneered. Another laughed. “She’s worthless.” “No,” Alpha Rane had said while staring down at me like I was dirt beneath his shoe. “She’ll be useful.” That was the day I became a slave. Not because I committed a crime. Not because my family betrayed anyone. But because my father tried to stop a monster.
