Chapter 1: Cassie De Vera

1234 Words
It was another morning and another day for me. If I could only choose, I will just lay down in my bed all day. But I can't. "Cassie, get up! You're getting late from your school!" I immediately smile when I hear Tiya Jesse's voice. My morning was never complete if I can't listen to it. My Tiya is the only family I have. I never meet my parents, nor I learn the truth about myself. She is the only one I knew that is blood-related. I started to crawl down from my bed. After I fixed it, I go to my bathroom and washes my face. "Good morning, Cassie!" Urgh! And there she goes, another voice that makes my day complete – uh, Nah! It makes my day worse! "Go away, Kikay," I said boringly. I could see in my peripheral vision that she started to make a face. She pouted her small lips. Kikay is cute, but I began to grow resentment towards her when her friends bullied her. That is the time when she realizes that she is the only that could see Kikay. "Why have you become hardheaded?" Kikay shrugs. "When you were young, you're so sweet that if I am big, you will lose oxygen because of my hugs." While my eyes are closed, I took the towel from the back of the bathroom door. I look at Kikay expressionless after I dry my face. "Why don't you just go back from where you came from?" Kikay's eyes widened, and her tiny arms touch her mouth. "No! I cannot go back to Biringan now! Ganos will kill me!" Here she goes again. I roll my eyes and turns my back from her. I could still hear her whimpering, but I acted like I can't listen to her. Kikay is a fairy. Her size is just the same as an adult thumb, and she loves to wear dresses in the color pink. What I love about Kikay are her glowing wings and her joyful personality. She always listens to me and cheers me up when I am sad. But I can't just accept it that I could not make friend with my peer. They think that I am crazy because I can see things that they don't see. When I went out of my room, I immediately saw my Tiya Jesse preparing breakfast in the kitchen. Our house is small that you could see the living room and kitchen immediately. "Oh, Cassie. Sit down and eat your breakfast," Tiya Jesse said when she saw me. I can smell the fried egg and fried rice that she cooks from my position. "Good morning, Tiya," I greeted my Tiya Jesse as I sit down in front of the dining table. After Tiya Jesse takes all the fried rice from the pan, she puts it in a bowl and sits down in front of me. We started eating quietly. "Cassie! Let's go to the shop late, okay? I want to get a new dress," Kikay said while we are eating. Kikay was already sitting on the side of my plate, sniffing my food, when I look at her.  I widened my eyes to her, but she makes a face at me. "Cassie? What's wrong?" Tiya Jesse ask me. When I look at her, she is looking at me with a big question on her face. "Ahm…" I opened my mouth, trying to find my words. But I couldn't think of what I'm going to say to her. No matter how I explained it to her, she wouldn't understand me because she can't see Kikay. "Is it Kikay again?" "Ha?" I was shocked when she mentions Kikay. "Yes, Tiya! I'm here!" Kikay said excitedly. She started to fly and goes near Tiya. She also gives Tiya small kisses on her cheeks. Tiya Jesse then started to look around. "Is it her?" Tiya asks again. I sighed and nodded at Tiya. This tiny fairy won't stop doing her things. Tiya Jesse smiles and looks around. "Where is she?" I look at her shoulder where Kikay is sitting. "I'm here, Tiya Jess!" Kikay shouted. But no matter how loud she makes, Tiya could not hear her. I eat my food and look away. "Is she at my shoulder? I feel like something is in my shoulder." "Yes, Tiya! I'm here. Why can't you see me?" Kikay said sadly. "She's there," I answer. Tiya started talking to Kikay even though she couldn't see her or hear her. She says what she wanted while eating. And I mind my own business. I finish my food and then get my towel and take a bath. I sighed when I saw my birthmark on the top of my left chest. It's a sword buried in a flower, and I don't know what kind.  It's weird. When I finished cleaning myself, I gather my things for school. I am wearing our school uniform, a black skirt that is half an inch above my knee and a white blouse with a knitted logo of our school on the left of my chest. I put my bag on my back and wear my black shoes. Then I just let my black wavy hair. "Tiya, I will head out," I said as I go out of our house. When I look at Tiya, she was washing the plates. She looks at me. "Take care, Cassie." "Cassie! You promise me, okay? I am excited to go to the shop!" Kikay emerges in my front. "Kikay, can you please stay away from me just today?" "Cassie, I can't. You know that I am your guardian." "Whatever." I said and walked fast. Kikay has been saying that she is my guardian since I am a baby. No matter how I push her away, she always comes back. Our university is just two blocks away from our house. So, I only have to walk to go there. I'm in my senior year and currently taking STEM for my last year in high school. Most of them are avoiding me; they think I'm weird. If I could only choose, I don't want to be like this. I don't know why I can see things that an ordinary person cannot, just like Kikay. There was a time I ask Tiya Jesse about it. But even her don't know the reason why. She just said that I would know it at the right time. Tsk! Because of this, I can't have my life. When I arrive at Dr. Jimenez University, the familiar sensation strokes my body. When I am here, I always feel someone is watching me. Well, it's true because most of the students are looking at me as I enter the vicinity. I just posted my poker face while walking. I started hearing whispers from them while looking at me. Being avoided by everyone is my daily dilemma. I pass thru the hall and climb the stairs. Our room is in the Science building and locates on the second floor near the stair. I was about to take my last step when someone suddenly bumped me. The next thing I knew, I was about to fall on the stairs. I close my eyes and waited for my body to hit the cold floor. But to my surprise, I am in somebody's arms instead.   © 04 – 29
