The Things We Didn't Say

*Chapter Seven – The Things We Didn’t Say* Kai showed up late to school the next day with ink on his fingers and music in his eyes. Eliana knew that look. He’d been writing again. They barely spoke during class, but something lingered between them like static before a storm. The kind of tension that wasn’t loud but demanded to be noticed. After school, they didn’t plan to meet. But she found him waiting outside the music room, backpack slung low, headphones around his neck. “I added something,” he said. Eliana raised a brow. “To the notebook?” “To the *song*.” She froze. “There’s a song now?” Kai smiled, a little smug. “There’s always been a song. We just didn’t hear it before.” They sat under the old oak tree behind the school their place. He pulled out his guitar, eyes not on her, but she felt every note like he’d written it into her skin. He played softly, the melody unfamiliar but comforting. Then he sang: *“I left words on your doorstep, Hoping silence would open them. But you shut the door gently, And I still stood there, Reading the goodbye in your eyes.”* When he finished, Eliana was quiet. “That’s what it felt like,” she whispered. He nodded. “And I... I should’ve knocked,” she added. He finally looked at her,not with anger, not with pain. Just with the quiet honesty that always scared her most. “We were both scared,” he said. “That’s what made us real.” She didn’t answer. Instead, she opened the notebook and wrote her verse beneath his. And for the first time in weeks, it didn’t feel like they were writing separately. It felt like they were building the same story.
