1 - The beginning of the end
Day 1095 My name is Alexander Chase. A man from a family of hunters, survivors and mercenaries. A war is coming and training every day for this upcoming conflict has made me realize the patience, grit and willpower one can contain within them. It's the year 2038, 3 years into the apocalypse. The inevitability of destruction is the one thing many fear, but I don't fear it. I don't fear anything other than myself, for what i have to become, in order to win this war, return to my family, return to my kin, leaving them as a fearful boy , and returning a completely changed man. I know what I have to do. This is about survival, kill or be killed. If you don't fight, you die. And I will fight, to every last breath. My name is Alexander Chase. This is my story. 3 years Earlier - 5th September, 2035 Day 1 I couldn't have asked for a more perfect day. The sun was setting in shades of amber and pink, casting a warm glow over the empty rooftop where I had set up a small, makeshift dinner table. A gentle breeze rustled the strands of my unruly hair as I nervously adjusted the ring box in my pocket. Tonight, on my 20th birthday, I was going to propose to the love of my life, Emily. The rooftop overlooked our city, the city of angels, LA, a sprawling metropolis that never slept. It was September 5th, a date that had been etched in my heart for months. I had been planning this moment for what felt like an eternity, rehearsing my words and imagining the sparkle in Emily's eyes when I got down on one knee. As the candles flickered to life, their soft light danced on the single red rose that stood proudly in the center of the table. I had picked that rose from the garden of the old, abandoned house next door—the one Emily always admired. Just as I was about to call out for Emily to join me on the rooftop, I heard the rooftop door creak open, and there she was, radiant as ever, her eyes shining with curiosity and love. "Alex, what's all this?" Emily asked, her voice filled with wonder as she approached the table. I smiled, my nervousness melting away in her presence. "Emily, I wanted to make this day unforgettable. But before I explain, I have something I want to ask you." With that, I dropped to one knee, my heart pounding with excitement and love. I opened the ring box to reveal the glistening engagement ring. "Emily," I began, "today, on my 20th birthday, I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate than by asking you this. Will you marry me?" Tears welled up in her eyes, and she gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. "Alex, yes, yes, a thousand times yes!" I slid the engagement ring onto her finger, sealing our promise with love and hope. As we embraced, the world outside ceased to matter, and all that existed was the bond between us. The rooftop celebration had turned into an evening of pure joy. Our family had gathered to celebrate my 20th birthday, and Emily's "yes" to my proposal had made it even more special. The evening air was filled with laughter, the clinking of glasses, and the sweet aroma of homemade birthday cake. I stood beside Emily, our hands entwined, as we shared the wonderful news with our loved ones. Casper, my older brother, was the first to congratulate us with a wide grin, clapping me on the back. "About time, Alex! Emily's a keeper." My mom, with tears in her eyes, enveloped us both in a warm embrace, welcoming Emily into our family with open arms. "I couldn't be happier for you two. You make a perfect couple." As we reveled in the happiness of the moment, the joyous chatter was interrupted by the sound of a television nearby. We turned to see my mom, who had been watching the news on a small portable TV. "Mom, come join us," I called out, but her expression stopped me cold. "Everyone, quiet, please," she said, her voice trembling as she turned up the volume on the TV. The news anchor's face appeared on the screen, a sense of urgency in their voice. "Breaking news: Unidentified aircrafts have landed in multiple regions across every continent, including North America. Authorities are currently investigating these mysterious arrivals, and information is limited at this time." A chill swept through the rooftop as we watched in silence, the joy from our celebration giving way to uncertainty. The news broadcast continued, showing images of crowds gathered around these enigmatic vessels, their otherworldly appearance leaving everyone baffled. Emily clung to my arm, her eyes wide with concern. "What could this mean, Alex?" I didn't have an answer, and the concern etched on the faces of our family members mirrored our own. The world had changed in an instant, and on what was supposed to be a day of celebration and love, we were faced with an unforeseen challenge that would test our bonds like never before. As the evening wore on, the situation with the unidentified aircraft grew more serious. The news anchor's voice on the television had turned somber and grave. "We are receiving updates from various regions around the world," the news anchor announced, their tone reflecting the gravity of the situation. "Authorities are now on high alert as they work to establish contact with the occupants of these mysterious vessels." I watched the television screen with a growing sense of unease, my earlier concerns deepening. Casper glanced at me, his expression mirroring the increasing seriousness of the situation. "Reports suggest that these aircraft have touched down without any prior communication or warning," the news anchor continued. "Speculations are running wild, and the international community is on edge, uncertain about the intent of these visitors." The images on the screen showed military personnel and government officials at various landing sites, their faces etched with tension as they attempted to approach the enigmatic vessels. The situation had escalated rapidly, and the world's uncertainty was palpable. We all understood that this unexpected turn of events had the potential to change our lives in ways we couldn't yet fathom. As the news broadcast continued to relay updates from different regions, the seriousness of the situation weighed heavily on our hearts. Casper and I found a moment of solitude away from the others, perched on the rooftop's edge, gazing at the distant skyline where the unknown aircraft had landed. I couldn't help but wear the weight of the situation on my face, and Casper noticed. He placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder and said softly, "Hey, Alex, I know this whole aircraft thing is unsettling, but remember, it's your birthday, man. Nothing should take away from the happiness we're feeling right now." I sighed, my thoughts still consumed by the mysterious event. "I know, Casper. It's just that... it's hard to ignore something like this, you know? It feels like the world has suddenly become a different place." Casper nodded, understanding my concerns. "I get it, Alex. But you've got Emily, and you've got us here with you. We're a family, and no matter what's happening out there, we're in this together." I looked at him, appreciating his support. "Thanks, Casper. It means a lot." Casper chuckled and clapped me on the back. "You know, I've always looked up to you, regardless of me being your big bro. You're strong and smart, and nothing can keep you down. So, let's make a pact, okay? No matter what happens, we won't let it ruin your special day." A warm smile spread across my face, and I nodded. "You're right, Casper. Today is about celebrating love, family, and the future Emily and I will share together. We won't let anything overshadow that." The evening that began with a celebration took a dark and harrowing turn when an ominous aircraft touched down in our quiet suburban neighborhood in the quieter parts of LA. Its arrival was sudden and unsettling, leaving our family members gathered at the rooftop celebration in a state of shock and panic. As the night grew darker, bizarre creatures emerged from the landed vessel. They were unlike anything we had ever seen—monstrous, alien beings with grotesque features, their eyes filled with malevolence. Panic gripped our hearts as the creatures unleashed chaos and terror in our once-peaceful neighborhood, and started to close in on our street. We retreated to the house with our family members, but the horrors we witnessed outside were etched in our minds. As the monsters closed in, my mother, Casper and many others, valiant and unwavering, fought fiercely to protect us. Tragically, they paid the ultimate price. My heart shattered as I watched them fall, their sacrifices etching a burning rage into my soul. "I'm going back! I'm going to kill every last one of those damn monsters!" I roared, my vision red with fury. I pushed through the shocked and grieving family members, desperate to return to the battle. Emily, her face a mix of grief and fear, grabbed my arm, her grip surprisingly strong. "Alex, please, we can't lose you too. We have to stay together, stay alive." But I was beyond reason, my anger consuming me. I tore myself free from Emily's grasp, determination in every step I took toward the door. It was my stepfather, Richmond, who stepped forward, his face a mask of anguish but resolute. He locked eyes with me and said, "Alex, your mother and Casper would want us to survive, to fight another day. We can't let their sacrifices be in vain." As my family members gathered around, their expressions a mix of shock and concern, they worked together to hold me back, to prevent me from rushing into the fray. I struggled against their grip, my rage unchecked, but their collective strength and love reminded me of what truly mattered. My vow of vengeance remained, but it was tempered by the wisdom and unity of my family. As we got into our car, we sped away from the once-familiar streets of our neighborhood, the world outside blurred into a nightmarish haze. The mournful wails, anguished cries, and blood-curdling screams faded into a haunting symphony of chaos, drowned out by the relentless roar of the engine and the drumming of rain against the car windows. Inside the car, a suffocating silence hung heavy, broken only by the rhythmic pattering of raindrops and the occasional whimper from one of the surviving family members. My thoughts were a tempestuous whirlwind, and my vision blurred, not from the rain but from the fury that raged within. My face was streaked with dried tears and snot, a stark reminder of the agony and rage that had gripped me. I couldn't escape the memory of my mother and Casper's sacrifices, and their faces haunted my thoughts. As the world outside continued to melt into an indistinct nightmare, I clung to my vow for revenge. It was a vow etched in blood and tears, a promise to honor the memory of those we had lost and to ensure that the creatures responsible for this nightmare paid for their atrocities. In the midst of the blurred chaos and despair that surrounded us, my determination burned like a beacon in the darkness. Revenge would become my driving force, a relentless pursuit that would lead us on a perilous journey to confront the monsters who had forever altered our lives. The road ahead was uncertain and treacherous, but my anger and resolve remained unwavering. With the echoes of screams and cries fading in the distance, we ventured forth into the unknown, our path marked by vengeance, loss, and an unquenchable thirst for justice. And as the city lights disappeared in the rearview mirror, the darkness of the night embraced us, casting us into a new world where only one thing was certain: I would stop at nothing to make them pay.
