DISTANCE BETWEEN US EPISODE 1
CHAPTER ONE A New Beginning Monday morning arrived with the sound of car horns, hurried footsteps, and students calling out to their friends as they entered Kingsbridge Secondary School. The first day of a new term always felt different. Some students walked through the school gate excitedly, showing off new shoes and bags. Others looked tired, already wishing the holiday had lasted another month. Daniel Okoro walked through the gate with his backpack hanging over one shoulder. Unlike most students, he wasn't thinking about the holiday. He was thinking about his future. This was his final year of secondary school, and he knew that the months ahead would be important. His final examinations were getting closer, and Daniel wanted excellent results. He had always dreamed of studying engineering. His father repaired machines and electrical appliances, and Daniel had grown up watching him work. He loved understanding how things worked and imagining how they could be made better. "Daniel!" Daniel turned around. Samuel Adeyemi came running toward him. "Wait!" Daniel smiled. "You're late." "I am not late," Samuel replied, trying to catch his breath. "I was strategically delayed." Daniel laughed. "What does that even mean?" "My alarm clock betrayed me." "Your alarm clock has been betraying you since JSS2." Samuel shook his head. "Don't blame me. Blame technology." They laughed as they walked toward the assembly ground. The students gathered in their various class lines while teachers stood at the front. After the morning prayers and announcements, the principal welcomed everyone back to school. "There are also some new students joining us this term," he announced. "Please make them feel welcome." Daniel barely paid attention until the principal mentioned that one of the new students would be joining SS3. "Her name is Amara Nwosu." Samuel leaned toward Daniel. "New student in SS3?" Daniel shrugged. "Maybe she transferred." "Interesting." "Stop being curious." "I'm always curious." The assembly ended, and everyone returned to their classrooms. Daniel took his usual seat near the window. Samuel sat behind him. Their class teacher, Mrs. Adebayo, entered a few minutes later. "Good morning, class." "Good morning, ma!" Mrs. Adebayo smiled. "Before we begin, I'd like you to welcome a new student." She looked toward the doorway. "Amara, please come in." A girl stepped into the classroom. The room became quiet. Amara Nwosu stood beside the teacher, holding a few books against her chest. She looked slightly nervous but tried not to show it. "This is Amara," Mrs. Adebayo said. "She has transferred to our school and will be joining you for the rest of the session." Amara smiled politely. "Good morning." "Good morning," the class answered. "Please introduce yourself." "My name is Amara Nwosu. I recently moved here with my family. I'm happy to be joining the school, and I hope we can all get along." "Thank you," Mrs. Adebayo said. "You can take the empty seat beside Daniel." Daniel looked at the empty desk beside him. He quickly moved his backpack. Amara walked over and sat down. "Hi," she whispered. "Hi." For a few seconds, neither said anything. Then Amara looked at the board. "Are we doing mathematics?" Daniel nodded. "Yes." She sighed. Daniel smiled. "You don't like mathematics?" "I didn't say that." "You sighed." "I sigh when I'm thinking." Daniel laughed quietly. "That's what people say when they don't like mathematics." Amara looked at him. "You talk too much." Daniel raised an eyebrow. "Really? My friend usually says I'm too quiet." "Then maybe he doesn't know you very well." Daniel smiled. For the first time that morning, Amara smiled too. The lesson began. Daniel noticed that Amara paid close attention. She copied everything from the board and answered several questions correctly. During English class, the teacher asked for someone to read a passage aloud. Amara raised her hand. Her reading was clear and confident. When she finished, the teacher praised her. "Excellent." "Thank you, ma." Daniel smiled. Amara noticed. "What?" "Nothing." "You smiled." "You did well." She looked slightly surprised. "Thanks." "You're welcome." When break time came, Samuel immediately grabbed Daniel's arm. "Food." Daniel laughed. "You think about food too much." "I think about survival." They went to the canteen and later sat beneath a large tree. Amara walked past them. Samuel called out, "Amara!" She turned. "Yes?" "Come and sit with us." Amara hesitated before joining them. Samuel started asking questions about her old school. Daniel listened. Eventually, the conversation turned to their plans for the future. "What do you want to study?" Amara asked Daniel. "Engineering." She nodded. "Which university?" "I haven't decided yet." "What about you?" "Medicine." Samuel stared at both of them. "Why do you people want difficult careers?" Amara laughed. "Why? What do you want to study?" Samuel proudly replied, "I want to be rich." Daniel and Amara burst out laughing. "I'm serious!" Samuel protested. The three of them continued laughing. For Amara, it was the first time that day she felt completely comfortable. She had been nervous about starting a new school, especially in her final year. Everyone already had their friends and groups. But Daniel and Samuel had made things easier. The school day ended at 3:20 p.m. As students packed their bags, Mrs. Adebayo entered the classroom with a stack of papers. "I have your first group project." A loud groan filled the classroom. Mrs. Adebayo laughed. "You haven't even heard the topic." The class became quiet. "You will work in groups of three." She began calling names. "Daniel Okoro." Daniel raised his hand. "Samuel Adeyemi." Samuel raised his hand. "Amara Nwosu." Amara looked at Daniel. Mrs. Adebayo continued. "Your topic is: The Role of Young People in Building a Better Society. You have two weeks to prepare a written report and a presentation." Samuel leaned toward Daniel. "We're going to get the highest mark." Daniel smiled. "If you actually work." "I will." Amara laughed. After class, the three agreed to meet in the library on Wednesday. On Wednesday afternoon, Daniel arrived at the library first. Amara arrived shortly afterward. "Hi." "Hi." "Where's Samuel?" Daniel sighed. "He said he'd come." Ten minutes later, Samuel finally appeared carrying a football. Amara looked at him. "Why do you have a football?" "Football training was cancelled." Daniel shook his head. "Let's just start." They sat around a table and began working. They discussed education, technology, environmental responsibility, community service, and the ways young people could contribute to society. Amara had several thoughtful ideas. Daniel wrote them down. Samuel, despite his usual jokes, contributed a few useful points too. After almost an hour, they had completed their outline. "Good work," Daniel said. Amara smiled. "You too." They packed their books. Outside, dark clouds had gathered. Rain began falling. Samuel immediately ran toward the gate. "I'll see you tomorrow!" Daniel shouted, "You're leaving us?" "I don't want to get wet!" Amara laughed. Daniel and Amara stood beneath a small shelter near the school gate. The rain became heavier. Amara watched it quietly. "I like rain," she said. Daniel looked at her. "Why?" "It makes everything feel calm." Daniel looked at the rain. "I've never thought about it that way." "Most people don't." A car stopped near the gate. Amara recognized it. "My mother." She adjusted her backpack. "See you tomorrow." "See you." She ran toward the car, then turned and waved. Daniel waved back. The car disappeared down the road. Daniel stood there for a moment, watching the rain. He wasn't sure why he was smiling. Amara was new. She was his classmate. They were working together on a school project. That was all. At least, that's what Daniel told himself. He picked up his backpack and began walking home. Neither Daniel nor Amara knew that their simple friendship was about to become much more important than either of them expected. For now, they were just two students with different dreams who had found themselves sitting beside each other. And sometimes, the most important stories begin with something as ordinary as an empty seat.
