In the Silver Mist Pack, power is absolute, and mates are destined by the Moon Goddess. Aurelia is an orphaned, low-ranking wolf who has always been hidden away and treated as a servant due to her striking, unnatural snow-white hair—a color rumored in pack folklore to be a curse. Alpha Lucius is the fierce, stern leader of the pack, bound by duty, political pressure, and the desperate need to secure a strong alliance to protect his territory against rival packs.

Chapter 1: The Shadows of the Packhouse
The scent of pine resin and damp earth always hung heavy over the Silver Mist Pack’s territory, but inside the lower kitchens of the grand packhouse, those natural smells were overwhelmed by boiled cabbage, woodsmoke, and the sharp bite of copper polish. Aurelia wiped a sleeve across her damp forehead, leaving a smudge of dark soot across her temple. She didn't mind the soot. Soot was dark, grey, and ordinary. It disguised her. "Aurelia! Faster with those platter handles! The elders are already arriving in the great hall, and if Alpha Lucius catches a single smudge on the ceremonial silver, it’s your hide!" Gretchen, the head cook—a broad-shouldered beta female whose voice could shatter granite—slammed a heavy oak cutting board onto the counter. Her amber eyes flashed with the low-level dominance common among the house staff, but her harsh tone lacked real malice. In truth, Gretchen kept Aurelia buried in the scullery precisely because it kept her safe from the higher-ranking wolves who frequented the upper floors. "They're polished, Gretchen," Aurelia said softly, her voice barely carrying over the clatter of pots and the roaring hearth. She set down the last silver serving tray. It reflected her face in its distorted, gleaming surface, and Aurelia quickly turned her head away. She hated mirrors. She hated reflections. Most of all, she hated her hair. While the members of the Silver Mist Pack possessed hair in shades of midnight black, deep chestnut, and dark bronze—matching the earthy tones of their wolf forms—Aurelia’s hair was pure, untouched snow. It wasn't the soft grey-white of an aging wolf; it was an impossible, brilliant white that seemed to draw whatever light was in the room and reflect it back out. From the day she had been dropped on the packhouse doorstep as an infant wrapped in a blood-stained blanket, her hair had been viewed as an omen. A cursed child, the old pack shaman had whispered back then. A blight upon the pack's bloodline. To protect her from being cast out into the wilderness as a pup, the late Alpha had relegated her to the lowest caste of the pack: a nameless servant without rank or family, forbidden from showing her hair in public. Every morning, Aurelia bound her long, silver-white locks tightly against her scalp, covering them with a thick, dull grey kerchief that concealed every strand. "Good," Gretchen grunted, inspecting the tray with a keen eye. She sighed, her posture softening slightly as she looked down at the young girl. Aurelia was small, thin from years of hard work, but possessed a quiet grace that no rags could entirely hide. Her eyes, an unusually pale lavender-grey, were heavy with exhaustion. "Listen to me, girl. Tonight is the Blood Moon Ceremony. The entire territory is here. Alpha Lucius is going to announce his betrothal to Lady Melania of the Iron Fang Pack. The halls are crawling with high-ranking warriors and proud betas. Keep your head down. Deliver the roast to the side tables, keep your hood low, and come straight back down here." "I know the rules, Gretchen," Aurelia murmured, adjusting the thick cotton scarf covering her hair. "I don't exist." "It's better that way," Gretchen said, though a rare flick of sympathy crossed her rugged face. "In this pack, being noticed by the powerful is a death sentence for someone with no family to protect them." Aurelia nodded. She understood the brutal truth of werewolf society better than anyone. Power was everything. Lineage was law. An orphan with no wolf scent and cursed white hair sat at the absolute bottom of the food chain. Taking a heavy tray laden with roasted meats, Aurelia pushed open the heavy wooden doors that led from the service corridors into the Great Hall. The noise hit her like a physical wave. Hundreds of wolves were gathered under the soaring arched ceilings of ancient stone and timber. Huge iron chandeliers held dozens of burning tallow candles, casting flickering golden light over the crowd. Laughing warriors clinked heavy wooden tankards of ale, while elegantly dressed noblewomen from both the Silver Mist and Iron Fang packs chatted in tight, exclusive circles. Overhead, through the massive glass skylight at the center of the hall, the full moon hung in the dark sky, tinged with a faint red hue—the Blood Moon, a night when the instincts of all wolves were heightened, and ancient bonds were said to be sealed. Aurelia kept her gaze fixed firmly on the polished stone floor beneath her boots, weaving through the outer edges of the room. She kept away from the main tables, sticking to the shadows near the grand stone pillars. "Look at her, dragging her feet like a beaten dog," a low voice sneered as Aurelia passed a group of young beta warriors. One of them intentionally stuck out a foot. Aurelia caught herself just in time, balancing the heavy tray before the hot juices could spill over her hands. She didn't look up, merely murmured a quiet, "Pardon me," and kept moving. She knew better than to make eye contact. To a high-ranking wolf, eye contact from an unranked servant was an invitation to challenge. At the far end of the hall, seated on the raised dais upon a chair carved from dark oak and raven bone, sat Alpha Lucius. Even from across the crowded room, his presence was staggering. At twenty-six, Lucius was already feared across the northern territories. He was broad-shouldered, tall, and built like a war machine, his dark brown hair falling loosely around a sharp, hard-angled jaw. His eyes were a piercing, stormy hazel that seemed to cut through the darkness of the hall. He wore a heavy leather vest trimmed with dark fur, showing off the thick scars across his forearms—trophies from the border wars against the rogue packs that constantly threatened their lands. Next to him sat Lady Melania of the Iron Fang Pack. She was striking in a very different way—wearing a dress of deep crimson silk, her dark hair coiled intricately above a face that was beautiful, cold, and calculating. The political alliance between their packs would secure the eastern border, forming an unstoppable force. Everyone in the hall knew why tonight had been called. The Blood Moon was the traditional night for an Alpha to declare his Luna and secure his lineage. Aurelia set her tray down on a side buffet table, her heart aching with a familiar, dull loneliness. She didn't envy Melania's jewels or status, but she envied the certainty. Melania belonged somewhere. Aurelia belonged nowhere. Suddenly, the air in the Great Hall shifted. It wasn't a sound, but a sudden, violent pulse in the atmosphere—a wave of pure, crackling static that made the hairs on Aurelia’s arms stand up. The scent of ozone, bitter dark chocolate, and rain-soaked cedar swept through the room, so thick and overwhelming that Aurelia gasped, dropping the serving tongs she was holding. The tongs clattered loudly against the stone floor. Up on the dais, Lucius stopped mid-sentence. His head snapped toward the side of the room, his hazel eyes dilating until they were almost entirely black. The golden light of his internal wolf flared beneath his skin. Aurelia felt her blood run hot—scalded by a force so immense it felt like her veins were filling with liquid fire. Her chest tightened, her lungs refusing to take in air as an unseen rope pulled her toward the dais. Mate. The word didn't come from her mind. It thundered through her soul, echoed by an ancient, primal pull that she had only ever heard about in legends. She took a step back in terror, her back hitting a cold stone pillar. No. No, this is impossible. Up on the dais, Lucius had stood up so fast his heavy oak chair crashed backward against the stone floor. The entire hall fell dead silent. The laughter, the music, the clinking of glasses vanished in an instant. Hundreds of pairs of eyes followed the Alpha’s line of sight, tracking his intense, feral gaze straight to the shadowed corner where the grey-clad servant stood. Lucius moved down the steps of the dais, his movements smooth, predatory, and completely devoid of his usual controlled grace. He was a predator tracking a scent. "Lucius?" Lady Melania’s sharp, panicked voice broke the silence, but the Alpha didn't even turn his head. He ignored his councilors, ignored his warriors, and walked straight toward Aurelia. Panicking, Aurelia shrank back into the shadows of the pillar. The pressure in her chest grew unbearable, a sweet, agonizing ache that begged her to step forward, to reach out to him, to surrender to the command radiating from his massive frame. Lucius stopped three feet in front of her. Up close, his height was staggering, his chest heaving as he inhaled deeply, drawing her scent—a mixture of crushed white lilies, frost, and fresh rain—into his lungs. His storm-grey eyes locked onto hers, filled with a mixture of shock, raw hunger, and a sudden, dark disbelief. "You," Lucius rasped, his voice a low, gravelly growl that vibrated through the floorboards. Aurelia trembled, lowering her head, but the motion caused her frayed, old headscarf to catch on a rough edge of the stone pillar behind her. With a soft snip, the old fabric tore. The grey kerchief slipped from her head and tumbled to the floor. A collective gasp echoed across the Great Hall. A cascade of brilliant, luminous, snow-white hair tumbled down past Aurelia’s shoulders, catching the candlelight and glowing like spun moonlight against her dark linen dress. It was a halo of impossible, striking white—the undeniable mark of the cursed child. Lucius froze, his hazel eyes widening as he looked from her lavender eyes down to the blinding white silk of her hair. The silence in the hall turned instantly into a tide of horrified whispers. "The cursed orphan?" "An unranked servant?" "Look at her hair... it's her! The white-haired witch!" "She can't be his mate! The Iron Fang alliance will crumble!" Aurelia looked up into Lucius's face, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She saw the exact moment the realization hit him. She saw the heat in his eyes turn into a cold, crushing panic. She saw his wolf—desperate to claim her—get forced down by the ruthless, calculating mind of an Alpha responsible for thousands of lives. Lucius looked at her white hair, then turned his head slightly to see the outrage on the face of the Iron Fang Alpha across the room, and the cold fury of his own pack elders. The mate bond pulled at them both, screaming for him to touch her, to mark her, to claim her as his Luna. Instead, Lucius took a slow, agonizing step backward. His face hardened into a mask of stone, burying the warmth that had momentarily flared in his eyes. "Take her," Lucius commanded, his voice cold, flat, and devoid of emotion as he addressed the guards standing nearby. "Secure her in the eastern tower chambers. No one speaks of this night." He turned his back on her, walking back toward the dais without looking back once. Aurelia stood frozen as two heavy-handed guards grabbed her arms, pulling her away into the dark corridors, her white hair trailing behind her like a shroud.
