The darkness in the cellar was so thick that it felt like a heavy blanket over my head. I sat on the cold, damp floor and tried to stay as still as a statue. Kael had told me to hide here, and I had to trust him. He was the Alpha, and he knew how to protect his pack. But I was not just a member of his pack anymore. I was his mate. I could feel his emotions coming through the thread like a pulse. He was angry, very angry, but underneath the anger, there was a layer of sharp fear. He was afraid for me. Kael had said that the salt and the thick stone walls were meant to hide my scent. I hoped they were enough. I pulled my knees up to my chest and wrapped my arms around them. I felt small in the dark. A few hours ago, I had been standing in the dining hall, feeling the power of a queen.
