CHAPTER 1: THE SHY HEART
Edward's hands trembled as he held the bouquet of flowers, his eyes fixed on Sophia's locker. He had mustered the courage to ask her to the spring formal, and today was the day. Taking a deep breath, he approached her, his heart racing. "Sophia, can I talk to you for a minute?" he asked, trying to sound suave. Sophia turned, her blonde hair cascading down her shoulders. "Hey, Edward. What's up?" Edward's voice caught in his throat. "I was wondering if... maybe... you'd like to go to the formal with me?" Sophia's expression softened, but her voice was gentle but firm. "Edward, I'm flattered, but I'm already going with Jake." Edward's face fell, the flowers feeling heavy in his hands. "Oh, okay. No big deal." Sophia touched his arm. "You're really sweet, Edward. Maybe ask someone else?" Edward nodded, forcing a smile. "Yeah, sure." As he walked away, he felt a pang of rejection. Why couldn't he be more like Jake – charming and confident? Edward trudged through the rest of the day, the bouquet of flowers still clutched in his hand. He couldn't bear to look at them, a constant reminder of his rejection. At lunchtime, he sat alone at his usual table, nursing a sandwich and his wounded pride. His friends, Matt and Emma, tried to engage him in conversation, but Edward just shrugged and muttered monosyllabic responses. As the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, Edward gathered his things and headed to his next class. He spotted Rachel, a fellow book club member, sitting alone at a table, nose-deep in a novel. "Hey, Rachel," Edward said, trying to sound casual. "Mind if I join you?" Rachel looked up, startled, and smiled. "Not at all, Edward. I could use some company." Edward sat down, feeling a sense of comfort in Rachel's presence. They chatted about books and classes, and for a brief moment, Edward forgot about Sophia's rejection. But as the conversation turned to the spring formal, Edward's heart sank. Rachel mentioned she was already going with someone, and Edward felt the familiar sting of rejection. "Hey, Edward, don't be discouraged," Rachel said, noticing his downcast expression. "You'll find someone amazing to go with." Edward forced a smile. "Yeah, maybe." As the class bell rang, Edward gathered his things and stood up. "Thanks for the chat, Rachel. You're a great listener." Rachel smiled warmly. "Anytime, Edward. You're a great friend." Edward walked out of the classroom, feeling a mix of emotions. He was grateful for friends like Rachel but couldn't shake off the feeling of being invisible to the people he crushed on.
