Mia's Secret Crush
Hearts in Havenswood: Mia’s Secret Crush
Chapter 1: Monday Morning Chaos
Monday mornings at Havenswood Academy were like a bad hangover—you knew it was gonna be a long day, but you had no choice but to show up.
Mia dragged herself out of bed, the bright sunlight piercing through her curtains like a nasty surprise. She squinted at her phone: 7:30 AM.
Ugh, she had, like, an hour to get to school.
As she stumbled into the kitchen, the aroma of burnt toast and fresh coffee hit her like a wave. Her mom was already up, scrambling eggs in a pan, while her little sister, Lily, was busy making a mess with cereal on the counter. Her dad was tapping away on his laptop at the table, looking like he'd been there for hours.
“Morning, sweetie,” her mom said, flipping an egg. “You’re gonna be late.”
Mia grabbed a slice of toast, shoving it into her mouth.
Lily giggled, spilling milk on her shirt.
“Mia has a crush! Mia has a crush! I saw it in her diary before I went to bed!” she squealed, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
Mia’s cheeks flushed.
“You went through my stuff?! You little—”
She stepped forward, but her mom cut her off.
“Uh-uh. None of that. You're gonna be late. And Lily, stop going through your sister's stuff.”
Her mom sighed.
“Yes, there’s something called privacy,” Mia said.
She slipped out of the kitchen, escaping the chaos. Time to get to school and pretend like everything was normal.
But as she walked out the door, her mind was already racing.
Jay. Jay. Jay.
Why did she have to like him again?
The walk to school was a blur, her mind stuck on Jay. She'd known him since freshman year, but it wasn't until last semester that she'd noticed him—really noticed him. The way he laughed, the way he smiled, the way he made her feel like she was the only person in the room.
As she approached the school gates, she spotted her best friend Alex leaning against a tree, earbuds in and eyes fixed on her phone.
“Hey, girl!” Alex shouted, waving her over.
Mia grinned, feeling a bit lighter. Alex was her partner in crime, her confidante, her everything.
“What's up?” she asked, plopping down beside Alex.
“Just scrolling through Insta,” Alex said, showing her a meme. “This one made me laugh.”
Mia giggled, and for a moment, Jay was forgotten. But as they walked into the school, her eyes scanned the crowd, searching for a glimpse of him.
And then, there he was—Jay, surrounded by his usual entourage, flashing that devastating smile.
Mia's heart skipped a beat.
Why did he have to be so... everything?
“Earth to Mia!” Alex waved a hand in front of her face. “You okay? You zoned out.”
Mia snapped back to reality, feeling her cheeks heat up.
“Yeah, sorry. Just... thinking about something.”
Alex raised an eyebrow. “Something... or someone?”
Mia's eyes widened, hoping Alex hadn't guessed her secret.
“What? No, nothing like that.”
Alex grinned, clearly unconvinced.
“Save it for lunch, girl. I want deets. Anyway, new gossip just got posted on the school's page. Jay recently broke up with Ari. Said she was too much of a 'pick-me girl', and that's just not his thing. I know, right? Tragic.”
Mia's eyes widened as Alex dropped the bombshell.
Jay and Ari broke up?
She felt a flutter in her chest.
“Shut up, really?” Mia tried to play it cool, but Alex knew her too well.
Alex nodded, scrolling through her phone.
“Yep. It's all over the school page. Guess he's single now...”
Mia's mind was racing.
Did this change things?
Should she make a move?
But what if he wasn't interested?
What if it ruined their dynamic?
As they walked into the school, Mia's eyes drifted back to Jay, who was now laughing with his friends.
He caught her gaze and smiled—a slow, genuine smile that made her heart skip a beat.
“Mia, focus!” Alex snapped her fingers. “We have class. And you have a certain someone to think about...”
Mia blushed, nudging Alex.
“Shut up, let's go.”
As they headed to their lockers, Alex leaned in.
“Lunch. Spill. Everything.”
Mia laughed.
“I've got nothing to spill... and I mean nothing.”
Alex chuckled, and they headed to their classes.
---
Mia was already seated in Mrs. Johnson's English Lit class, flipping through her notes, when the door swung open and Jay strolled in, laughing with Mrs. Johnson about something.
“Ah, perfect timing, Jay! You're just in time,” Mrs. Johnson said, smiling.
Jay nodded, his eyes scanning the room before landing on Mia.
“Switched from Bio to Creative Writing, Mrs. J. I needed a change of pace.”
Mrs. Johnson nodded.
“Well, you're in luck—we're doing some creative writing today. Take a seat next to Mia. She's been working on a great story.”
Jay's eyes locked onto Mia's, and he grinned as he slid into the seat beside her.
“Hey,” he whispered, dropping his bag by his feet.
Mia's heart was suddenly doing backflips.
“Hey,” she whispered back, trying to play it cool.
Mrs. Johnson started handing out prompts, and Jay leaned in, his shoulder brushing against Mia's.
“So, what's the story about?” he whispered, his breath tickling her ear.
Mia's focus shattered.
“Uh, just... about a girl who... does stuff,” she muttered, totally not making sense.
Jay chuckled, low and smooth.
“Sounds deep.”
Mrs. Johnson shot them a look.
“Alright, let's get writing, everyone!”
As the class fell silent, Mia felt Jay's eyes on her, waiting for her to start writing.
She scribbled something random, her mind racing.
This was gonna be a very interesting class.
