Chapter one.
"What a freaking f****d up day?" He cursed as he walked.
Stefan was just getting home after a long day of work. All he wanted was a hot dinner, a bath and then his bed, though not necessarily in that order. He was still annoyed that his day had not gone the way he wanted because of some issue with the internet that his personal assistant failed to fix. If it were not that he would have to go through the grueling process of hiring a new assistant that was attuned to his tastes, he would have fired him without a second thought.
As if that was not enough, the meeting he was supposed to be having with a potential investor had been shifted all of a sudden because the investor’s wife had called him out of the meeting only minutes prior to Stefan getting to the agreed location.
When Stefan probed more which was code for breathing down his personal assistant’s neck while dangling the possibility of unemployment, he found out that the so called emergency was a ballet recital that had been forgotten. All that did was increase Stefan’s disdain for marriage and by extension, children. There was no way he was ready to give up control of his perfectly structured life where he answered to one else but himself in exchange for one where he was expected to answer to the needs of someone else while taking care of them.
Just as he was shedding his clothes to jump into the shower to wash off the grime of the day, his phone vibrated in his pocket. He took it out and stared at it for a while. Scowl in place because his assistant knew better than to disturb him when he was away from the office, he answered the call with an admonishment on his tongue. He was stopped from releasing it as his assistant immediately started speaking, so quickly that Stefan could barely make out a word. In a tone that betrayed the annoyance that was bubbling in his veins, he told him to speak clearly in a manner that humans could understand. And the more he listened, the more his scowl got deeper with how irritated he was getting.
Without even waiting for him to finish what he was saying, Stefan took the phone off his ear and hung up. He put his hand on his hips as he tried to breathe in through his nostrils and exhale through his mouth to calm himself down.
His grandfather knew the exact buttons to push to get him to tick. What did the old man have up his sleeve again? He knew that he wasn’t going to get any answers from the walls of his bedroom so he buttoned up his shirt, donned his jacket and strode out of the room, calling for the driver. He got into the car and told his driver to drive to the hospital where his grandfather was admitted.
On getting to the hospital, he didn’t need anyone to take him to the room where his grandfather was being kept because he knew the layout like the back of his hand. No one stopped him as doctors and nurses barreled past him as they were used to the sight of him walking through the halls.
Perhaps stopping him also stemmed from the fact that his face was set like granite.
Finally, he got to a quieter floor. He had paid through his nose to ensure that his grandfather not just got a private suite but also one that was on a floor higher than everyone else so he was free from the hustle and bustle that came with the hospital. Some said that the frail looking old man that was behind the door was the only living thing that Stefan cared about.
As he opened the door and walked into the room, he was reminded that his grandfather was anything but frail. Three nurses were in the room with him, each of them obviously charmed by the smiling old man. When they took notice of him, it was like the temperature of the room dropped. Their smiles disappeared as they exchanged nervous glances with each other before scurrying out of the room like he was the grim reaper himself and they couldn’t bear to be in close quarters with him.
“You’re such a killjoy”
Stefan was distracted from the nurses that had run out of the room by his grandfather who was looking at him like he had just taken his prized possession away. He was not interested in knowing why his grandfather was enjoying the company of three ladies who looked even younger than him, his grandchildren. He was more interested in finding out why his grandfather was refusing to undergo the surgery that they both knew was needed for him to have a better quality of life.
He wasted no time in asking the question that had been burning in the back of his throat since he got the call from his personal assistant only some time before.
Stefan didn’t think he had ever been surprised as he felt as his grandfather very flippantly by the way, told him his singular reason for rejecting the surgery.
“What do you mean that you’re not going to have the surgery until I introduce my fiancée to you?” he almost barked.
The look his grandfather gave him was one that reminded him of the business man that was buried deep inside.
In his days, he had been a force to be reckoned with but surrounded by wires that were the reason behind his ability to remain strong; he looked like a man that was merely hanging on for dear life.
Stefan couldn’t believe the words that were leaving his grandfather’s lips. He had thought that they were on the same page. He was shocked to find out that not only was his grandfather on a different page than he was, he was also very adamant about his terms. What did it matter that at his age, he was not surrounded by children? To him, he was still young and had a lot of time on his hands. He was in no position both professionally and personally to get saddled with responsibilities such as a wife and children and he told his grandfather so.
“Then, I guess you should go sign my release papers. There’s no point wasting my time here in the hospital” Mr. Graham, his grandfather let out wearing a serious look on his face.
If he could find the person who sold such a ridiculous idea to his grandfather, he was going to skewer them alive. What were they thinking selling such ridiculousness to an old man?
“You know that I’m trying to close the deal with Haven Industries. This is no time for you to act like a child and play with your life, Grandpa” He added the grandpa part because he knew that he hated being called that.
Maybe that was him acting out but he didn’t appreciate being backed up into a corner even though it was by the only family he had left.
When he merely scoffed and looked back at the 60 inch TV that had on news of the stock market, Stefan knew that he was fighting a losing battle but he had not become a business man by accepting defeat.
“I can’t lose you; you’re the only family I have left. Why don’t you have the surgery, then we can revisit this marriage thing?” He made a face as he uttered the word marriage like it left a bad taste in his mouth. He had no plans whatsoever of revisiting the topic but his grandfather didn’t need to know that. What was important was him accepting to have the surgery and actually going in for it. What he didn’t know couldn’t hurt him, or so he thought as his grandfather chuckled.
“Do you think I’d fall for that, boy? When you come in with a woman you want to settle down with, then we can revisit the surgery thing”
It was not surprising that his grandfather had reached the level of success that he had before old age came in with an illness that forced him out of his office. Stefan had no choice but to dance to his tune at that time but he was definitely not settling down anytime soon.
“Fine, I’ll think about it”
