Chapter 2

The moment I said that, the lobby fell silent. A flicker of panic crossed Lily's eyes, but she forced herself to remain calm. "Mrs. Calloway, you must have misunderstood. Those panties are a sample the hotel recently received from a supplier. They were supposed to be placed in the Presidential Suite for distinguished guests to choose from. Mr. Calloway's assistant may have put them in his briefcase by mistake. It was purely a work oversight." The more she spoke, the calmer she became. She looked up at me with complete confidence. "If you suspect Mr. Calloway and me over such a trivial matter, that would be the greatest disrespect to him. He works at the hotel until the early hours every day. He has not had a proper rest for three consecutive weeks because of this project." With those words, she not only cleared herself of suspicion but also painted me in public as a wife who did not understand her husband and was overly suspicious. The next second, the elevator doors opened, and Adrian, who had been in a meeting, hurried over. "Honey, listen to me. It was just a Housekeeping Department sample. I was going to take it home to show you. This is really a misunderstanding." The hotel's Director of Operations and Finance Director followed behind him. Both immediately spoke up for him as well. "Mrs. Calloway, I was in Mr. Calloway's office that day. We had been discussing our Q4 revenue targets, and when I left, I saw that sample bag still on his desk." "Yes, this batch of new products was sent by the Valoria supplier. Our entire management team reviewed the samples. If you do not believe us, I can pull up the supplier's email records for you." They sounded sincere, and their expressions were earnest, as if my suspicions had no basis at all. Adrian's eyes reddened slightly. He looked hurt as he took my hand. "Honey, don't be angry. It's all my fault. I have been too busy lately and neglected your feelings. I promise that from now on, I will tell you about everything right away. Okay?" He knew that whenever he comforted me like this, my heart would soften. Seven years ago, when I married him with ten billion dollars in assets, everyone laughed at the poor man who had grown up in the Harborwick District. They believed that once Mrs. Calloway had taken a liking to him, he would live a life of wealth from then on. To prove his abilities, he worked desperately to run this hotel. He turned a venerable hotel on the verge of bankruptcy into today's Midtown Fairmont, the most sought-after luxury landmark. At our wedding, he had sworn in front of all the guests, "I will love only Evelyn for the rest of my life. My life, my soul, and everything I own belong to her." At the time, I believed him. I looked into his sincere yet tired eyes. After two seconds of silence, I waved my hand. "I will not pursue this matter any further. Everyone, go back to work." Everyone left in relief. Adrian also visibly relaxed and lowered his head to kiss my forehead. "Honey, I booked your favorite restaurant for tonight. Wait for me." I smiled and nodded, watching him walk into the elevator. But my doubts did not disappear. In seven years of marriage, Adrian had never bought me any intimate apparel. And those panties were a size XS. I had always worn a size M. No matter how much I trusted him, I could not convince myself otherwise. I had to get to the bottom of this. After leaving the hotel, I called Louis. He ran a private investigation agency that specialized in uncovering personal secrets for people in our circle. When the call connected, I spoke calmly. "I want you to investigate someone. Lily from the Housekeeping Department at the Westbury Hotel. I want to know everything about her. I also want you to find out every place Adrian has been, every credit-card transaction he has made, and every flight he has taken over the past year. Do not miss a single one." On the other end of the line, Louis teased me in his usual lazy tone. "Mrs. Calloway, are you feeling murderous?" "I have no tolerance for betrayal."
