Chapter 3

Louis was highly efficient and quickly sent me the results. He also added an irritating comment. "Your husband has a mistress. I also provide divorce lawyer services, so come to me if you need one." I opened the compressed file in the chat. It contained posts Lily had made on a social media platform. She updated frequently, and every post publicly displayed her relationship. Her latest post was a photo of her wearing my silk nightgown. The caption read: "I spent the whole afternoon playing in his walk-in closet. He said I look much better in this nightgown than his wife and insisted that I wear it for him." I gave a cold laugh and continued scrolling without expression. The next photo showed the two of them together at Seacliff Estate. Its caption read: "He said he brings me here every year. I asked whether he would ever get tired of it, and he said, 'Anywhere feels new when I'm with you.'" I remembered that day. Adrian had said he was going to Philadelphia for two days to discuss an acquisition proposal with the owner of a century-old hotel. It turned out that his so-called acquisition proposal was taking her on a trip to the place where we had held our wedding. My fingers trembled slightly as I continued scrolling. A photo of a birthday cake caught my attention. The caption read: "Mr. C said my birthday only comes once a year, and he will never miss an important moment in my life." The date in the corner of the photo was the exact day my mother died of a sudden heart attack. That day, I cried until I fainted outside the emergency room. Yet he said he was accompanying an important client and could not leave. So the so-called important client was her birthday celebration. The photos and words in those posts were like sharp blades, completely destroying all my trust in him and every last shred of hope I had clung to. The romantic love I had believed in all these years had long since rotted away. Baxter noticed my emotions and jumped onto my lap. I patted his head. But he wouldn't stop. He bit the hem of my clothes and pulled me forward. I followed him through the hallway and into Adrian's study. A few days earlier, the housekeeper had suddenly resigned, and the room had not yet been cleaned up. Baxter crawled beneath the bookcase and dug hard at the floor with his paws. I crouched down and reached inside, feeling a small brown pill bottle. The label had not been completely torn off, revealing a blurred line of small print. Norgestimate. My fingers froze, and my heart suddenly clenched. That drug was used for contraception. My mother's only wish before she died was to see me have a child. But no matter how many renowned doctors I saw or how much medicine I took, I never became pregnant. Only then did I understand. It was not that I could not get pregnant. He simply never wanted me to become pregnant. I looked up, my gaze landing on the drawer at the very top of the bookcase. It was the one place Adrian never allowed me to touch. For seven years, I had respected his privacy, and he had never locked it. We had silently agreed to leave that private space for each other. But now, I had completely lost my mind. I reached out and pulled the drawer open. It was filled with handwritten letters. Every letter began with the words, "Dear Lily." Adrian's handwriting was neat, restrained, and gentle. I read through the letters one by one, and my heart grew colder with each one. In them, he promised Lily that she was the only person he truly loved. He wrote, "I thought I married her because I loved her, but now that I have met you, I can no longer lie to myself." He also wrote, "Please give me a little more time. Once the asset structure of the Westbury Hotel has been sorted out, I will tell her the truth. Then we will take the money and go to the Western Continent, never to return." The last letter was dated three days ago. At the end, he wrote, "Darling, you asked me again when I would tell her the truth. All I can say is, soon. She has recently brought up wanting a child again. I lied and told her that we should wait until the hotel is stable for another year. But I will not let her get pregnant. Please trust me. I have always remembered our promise." I could no longer think. My stomach churned, and anger drained all the strength from my body. I collapsed onto the floor and bit my lip tightly. Only after I bit it until it bled did I suppress the urge to rush out and confront him. So, for all these years, he had been acting every day. He acted devoted and faithful. He acted like a good husband who deeply loved his wife. But in his heart, I had always been nothing more than a "business transaction." I photographed all the letters as evidence and put the norgestimate in my bag. Just as I finished doing all this, Adrian came home from work.
