Chapter 4

In the bedroom, I lay on my side with my back to him. He lay down beside me, wrapped an arm around my waist, and rested his chin in the hollow of my shoulder. "Honey, are you still angry about what happened today?" I said nothing. My mind was filled with the letters in that drawer. Every time he slept with me, another love letter to Lily would appear in the drawer afterward. The thought made me sick. I reached out and pushed Adrian's hand away. "Don't touch me." Sensing my mood, Adrian sighed helplessly. "You can hit me if you want. As long as it makes you feel better, I will do anything." I gripped the blanket tightly, my body trembling slightly with hatred. If I had not found those letters and that bottle of pills, he might have deceived me forever. But not anymore. A mocking smile appeared on my face as I asked calmly, "Adrian, do you really love me?" The person behind me paused for a moment before answering softly, "I love you, Honey." "You can test whether I truly love you anytime." I said nothing and closed my eyes in disappointment. When someone deliberately pretends not to understand, no one can make them understand. The next day was the Westbury Hotel's annual gala. Every hotel employee was present. The ballroom was lavishly decorated. The crystal chandeliers cast brilliant light. The long tables were covered in Westmere linen tablecloths, and the silverware gleamed softly in the candlelight. Golden words scrolled across the large screen: "Westbury Hotel Annual Outstanding Contribution Awards." Dressed simply, I sat at a table in the corner. The wineglass before me was full of red wine, but I did not take a single sip. I had chosen an inconspicuous seat among the guests. "Next, we will present this year's Outstanding Employee Award. The recipient is Lily from the Housekeeping Department!" Applause erupted, and everyone looked toward Lily, who stood at the side of the stage. Her makeup was flawless that day. She wore a sharply tailored burgundy velvet dress, and the Bellamy Panther Necklace at her collarbone sparkled painfully under the lights. I recognized that necklace. Last Valentine's Day, Adrian said, "I won it for you at an auction." I had told him the design was too youthful for me and asked him to return it. It turned out he had not returned the necklace. He had given it to his mistress. Lily smiled as she stepped onto the stage, took the microphone, and began slowly. "Thank you to the hotel, and thank you to Mr. Calloway for his continued trust and guidance. During my year at the Westbury Hotel, I have learned so much and felt the warmth of home." She looked toward Adrian in the front row, her tone shy. "Mr. Calloway often encourages me and supports every one of my ideas. I will always remember your kindness. I will work even harder in the future and live up to the hotel's expectations." Adrian smiled at Lily, his eyes filled with undisguised pride. The host took the microphone. "Thank you, Lily, for your wonderful remarks! Now, let us welcome Mr. Calloway to say a few words about our outstanding employee." The microphone was handed to Adrian. He cleared his throat and looked at Lily gently. "Everyone has seen Lily's service awareness and passion for her work. I have always believed that the Westbury Hotel lacks a true brand image that represents youthful luxury, and Lily is the right person for that." He paused, looked around the room, and spoke with complete certainty. "So I have decided that the hotel will invest in establishing a boutique hotel of Lily's own. The Westbury Hotel will provide all the funding and team support." The room fell silent for a moment, then immediately erupted into chatter. Establishing a boutique hotel required at least twenty million dollars in investment, from building a team and positioning its clientele to choosing a location and running operations. Yet he was casually investing such a vast sum in a junior employee from the Housekeeping Department. Adrian turned to Lily and encouraged her. "Lily, do not be afraid to fail. Be bold and do it. I will always be there to back you up." Lily stood there, deeply moved, and her eyes immediately reddened. She had not expected such a surprise. Her voice carried excitement she could not suppress. "I will never let Mr. Calloway down. I will prove myself with my results and let more people see the Westbury Hotel brand." She bowed deeply. When she straightened up, tears still glistened at the corners of her eyes. Applause rang out again, even more enthusiastically than before. Sitting in the corner, my fingers suddenly tightened. How ironic. He was using my money and connections to pave the way for his mistress. The host smiled and took the microphone. "Thank you, Mr. Calloway, for your strong support. We also look forward to Lily's boutique hotel becoming a great success! Now, is there anyone else here who would like to comment on Lily?" The room immediately fell silent. After Adrian had spoken, no one else had anything to say. Lily stood onstage holding her trophy, her face full of pride and joy. I slowly stood up and gave a cold laugh. "Before establishing a new hotel, did you ask for the opinion of the true owner of the Westbury Hotel?" It was time to settle some accounts. As soon as I finished speaking, the image on the large screen behind the stage suddenly changed, and everyone cried out in shock.
