The golden ticket
Lina’s fingers drummed a frantic rhythm on the frayed strap of her crossbody bag, the kind of beat that could power a whole playlist if nerves were music. Outside the cyber café, the late-afternoon sun baked the cracked pavement, turning everything golden and sticky. She paced in her oversized hoodie, baggy jeans, and sneakers that had seen better days—her armor against a world that judged outfits before faces. Two weeks ago she’d walked into that exam hall at Silverstone Academy feeling like an impostor. Now she felt like she might actually throw up. The door banged open. Emily burst out like she’d won the lottery, folder clutched to her chest like a trophy, hair bouncing in perfect waves that somehow never frizzed. “Spill,” Lina demanded, lunging forward. “Now. Before I die of suspense.” Emily’s eyes went wide—dramatic pause, classic Emily—then her lips curved into that devilish grin Lina both loved and feared. “Three hundred forty-eight.” Lina’s heart flatlined. “The pass mark?” “Three hundred.” Emily’s grin exploded. “You passed, babe. You’re in.” “WHAT?!” Lina shrieked, throwing her arms around Emily in a fierce hug. The two spun around in the café’s parking lot, laughing like fools. “You did it,” Emily gasped between giggles. “I knew you would. I knew.” “I can’t believe it… I actually did it!” Lina gasped, breathless and euphoric. The two had been inseparable since childhood, opposites in every sense. Lina—quiet, cautious, a little shy—was balanced perfectly by Emily’s outgoing, sassy, bold energy. Lina still remembered the day they met—Emily had marched up to her on the playground, hands on her hips, and said, “You look lonely. I’m fixing that.” Emily wiped at her own eyes, still beaming. “Picture it: us ruling those marble halls. Matching plaid skirts—okay, maybe not matching, you’d hate that—but study dates in the café with the ridiculous overpriced lattes. We’re gonna own Silverstone.” Lina smiled, warmth spreading in her chest. “We’ll see… I’ve got to pick up Mia first, then help Mom at the bakery.” “Pfft. That can wait! Tonight, we celebrate. I’m dragging you out at seven. No shop, no siblings, no excuses. We’re toasting your victory lap before you step into that shark tank.” Lina groaned, but the protest was weak. “You’re going to get me in trouble on day one.” Emily winked, already backing toward the street. “No promises, scholarship queen. No promises at all.” As Emily disappeared around the corner, Lina stood there a moment longer, the sun warming her face, heart still racing. She stared at the folder Emily had shoved into her hands—official Silverstone letterhead, gold-embossed crest glaring in the light. “Okay… Silverstone,” she exhaled, the words barely audible. “Don’t screw this up, Lina.” —— “WHAT DOES SHE SAY?!” Mia exclaimed as she and Lina burst through the back door of Reyes’ Kitchen, the little family restaurant tucked on a quiet street in Havenport, Connecticut. The bell above the front door jingled faintly from the last customer leaving. Mia—seven going on eight—skidded to a stop, nearly slipping on the tiled floor, her eyes wide with excitement. “Come on, Lina! Spill! Did you get in or what? Don’t leave me hanging like some Netflix cliffhanger!” Lina chuckled, grabbing Mia’s hands to steady her before she knocked over a stack of takeout containers. “Easy, tornado. Yes. I got in.” Mia squealed so loud it echoed off the stainless-steel counters. “YES! Scholarship queen! We’re gonna be fancy now! Can I borrow your uniform skirt to play dress-up? Wait—no, better: can I come visit and pretend I’m rich too?” Lina laughed harder, squeezing Mia’s hands. “One crisis at a time, kid. You’d last five minutes at Silverstone before starting a food fight in the cafeteria.” Mia did a little twirl, almost knocking over a stack of menus, but caught herself just in time, giggling. Behind the counter, Rosa Reyes leaned against the prep table, one hand pressed to her side as she caught her breath. A light sheen of sweat glistened on her forehead, but her eyes were already searching Lina’s face. “Come here, both of you. Show me this fancy letter before I burst from waiting.” Mia dragged Lina forward like she was presenting a trophy. “Mama! Lina’s going to Silverstone! Like, the super-rich-kid school! She’s basically famous now!” Rosa’s expression softened instantly. “Is that so?” Lina pulled the folder from her bag and handed it over. “Here, Mamá. Official. Full ride.” Rosa opened it carefully, as if the paper might tear if she moved too fast. Her eyes moved across the page once… then again. Her hand flew to her mouth. “You—” Her voice broke. “You made it? Mi amor… you really made it?” Lina nodded, her throat tightening. “I made it.” Rosa pulled her into a tight embrace, flour-dusted apron and all, holding her like she might disappear if she let go. “I’m so proud of you, baby,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “So, so proud. God is good. You hear me? God is good.” Lina laughed through her tears, half-gasping. “Mamá… I can’t breathe.” Rosa loosened her grip just enough to cup Lina’s face, thumbs brushing away the wet streaks. “Good. Means you’re alive and winning.” Then she turned toward the kitchen. “Mija, go change out of that uniform. Put on something nice. Tonight we celebrate—no arguments.” Mia pumped her fist. “Yes! Party at Reyes’ Kitchen!” Rosa shook her head, smiling. “We’ll close early. I’ll make flan.” “Extra whipped cream?” Mia asked immediately. ”And can I tell everyone at school tomorrow that my sister’s basically a celebrity?” Rosa chuckled, the sound warm and a little wheezy. “Sí, tell them. But behave, alright? No starting rumors.” Mia gasped dramatically. “Best. Day. Ever.” As she ran off toward the back, Rosa’s smile softened. She looked back at Lina—really looked this time. “You’re going to shine there,” she said quietly. “But promise me something.” Lina nodded. “Don’t let those people make you feel small. And call me every night. I’ll be waiting.” Something in her tone made Lina’s chest tighten again. “I promise, Mamá.” Rosa kissed her forehead, then stepped back, clapping her hands lightly. “Now come on—help me plate these last orders before your sister turns this place upside down.” Lina smiled and moved to the counter, picking up a plate. The warmth of the kitchen wrapped around her again—the hum of the oven, the clatter of dishes, the sweet scent of sugar and spice. Safe. Familiar. Her gaze drifted back to the letter resting on the counter. The gold crest of Silverstone gleamed under the kitchen lights. It didn’t feel warm. It felt… distant. Like a door opening into a world that wasn’t built for her. Lina swallowed, folding the letter carefully and sliding it back into the envelope. “Okay,” she whispered under her breath. “Let’s see what Silverstone has for me.”
