Chapter1 :The wrong bride
Kate's POV:
I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the closed door. I had been staring so long my eyes began to ache. Still, I couldn’t look away. Kevin would walk through that door any moment.
My husband.
The thought sent a strange flutter through my stomach. Husband. I was married. I couldn’t believe it. It was a dream I wished someone would pinch me out of. Just hours ago, I stood beside Kevin on the altar in a beautiful white dress I could never afford, listening as he promised to love and honor me for the rest of his life.
It felt like a dream
I have always wondered what my husband would be like. How it would feel to be married. All my life, I worked hard for anything I needed. Never would I have thought I would marry a billionaire.
While I was still in thought Kevin walked into the room. He looked nothing like what I imagined. I was expecting a lovely Kevin who would walk in gently but it was the opposite. He was smelling of alcohol. His eyes were heavy. His tie was loosened around his neck, his dark hair disheveled and his expression dead. He had clearly had too much to drink. But that wasn't the problem. It was the way He looked at me.
There was no warmth in his eyes.
There was no affection.
This is not how I pictured my first night as a married woman. I nervously adjusted myself on the bed.
“What are you doing? He almost hissed at me
“I ...I am, waiting for you”
He let out a humorless laugh
“Waiting for me? He asked like it was rhetorical
"I hope you don’t think I see you as a wife”
I was confused. For a moment I thought I had misunderstood him.
"What?
“You heard me”
He walked farther into the room
My heart nearly stopped. I couldn't figure out what was going on. Kevin came to my family to ask for my hand in marriage. Out of nowhere he appeared and told everyone how he had loved me for a while without me noticing. He was from the richest family in town. My family welcomed him with open arms. When they saw how rich he was. They didn't hesitate. My father was in debt, the bookshop my parents spend years to build was about closing down and my younger sister was about dropping out of school. Rich in law was the solution to all our problems.
“I hate you Kate” he continued
Hate? What did I do that my newly wedded husband hated me already
“Why? I asked. My voice almost silent
“Why? He snapped
“because you are a home wrecker.
“I don’t understand…What did he mean I was a home wrecker. I have never broken anyone's home.
“Cole is my sisters’ fiancée. They are getting married. But you knew that didn’t you? He turned around to look at me with bloodshot eyes.
"Everything was perfect until you came along and decided to mess around with him.
"You broke my sister’s heart. She is in the hospital fighting for her life and you were messing around with her fiancée.
You are the reason my sister is in a coma”
I stared at him in confusion. What was he talking about. I slowed my heartrate and tried to put my thoughts together.
Think. Think Kate. Something wasn’t right.
Cole? Cole was Adriana’s boyfriend.
My younger sister had been dating him for a while.
Wait, did he think me and Cole were in a relationship.
“No... That’s not-” he cut me off before I could finish
“Don’t you dare try to deny it. Victoria saw you too together. It’s the last thing she said before she fell into a coma”
Kevin's eyes burned with fury.
“I married you to get you out of the way. His voice was quiet now
"So, you wouldn’t interfere anymore.
"I married you to make sure you suffer because that is what women like you deserve.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. He had married me to punish me?
"But I thought you loved me". He said he did
His expression hardened
“I lied” he turned away from me.
It all became clear to me. Kevin never loved me. He might not have even known who I was.
This was a plot for revenge. He thought I was Adriana.
Somehow, he had mistaken me for my younger sister Adriana who seemed to be having an affair with an engaged man and he married me thinking it was her to make me suffer.
My stomach twisted.
Adriana had gone off to college abroad and he was the one who paid for her tuition. If he found out the truth, it meant my sister would have to drop out or become stranded oversees. Adriana has always lived her life on the edge. Doing whatever she wanted. I always had to be there to clean up her mess. I always took the blame. And now I was standing in a marriage that was built by her mistake.
“I am sorry, I never...
Kevin who couldn’t look me in the eye all this while turned to look me eye to eye. There was a furry in his eyes.
“Sorry won’t cut it. Sorry won’t bring my sister out of that hospital bed.
"Sorry won’t save you from me”
Kevin left the room and slammed the door shut.
I jumped at the sound. I was alone. My legs finally gave away. I sank onto the edge of the bed, pressing my trembling hand over my mouth as tears blurred my vision.
This was going to be my reality.
A marriage without love.
A husband who hated me.
Maybe happiness was never for me. I would always have to sacrifice myself for my sister. It’s how it has always been. It’s how it will always be. Tears ran uncontrollably down my eyes. I would have to keep this secret. Kevin must never find out the truth.
