THE INJURED GOD
*THE JUNGLE. DAY 1.* The car stopped at the edge of the forest. Rain clouds were hanging low in the sky. Arina pulled her hoodie tighter. "Guys, are you sure this is safe?" Maya laughed from the driver's seat. "Arina, you worry too much. It's just a 3-day camping trip." Sara leaned out of the window. "Yes, and the pictures will be amazing for Instagram." Zain grabbed the tents from the trunk. "Come on. The rain hasn't even started yet." Arina was the last one to get out. She was 20. Soft heart. Too soft, according to her friends. She always stopped to help stray cats. Always carried bandages in her bag. "Just in case," she always said. The four of them walked into the jungle. The trees were tall and dark. The air smelled like wet earth and pine. *THE SOUND.* It was around 3 PM when Arina heard it. A low whine. Like pain. Like something was dying. She stopped walking. "Did you guys hear that?" Maya shrugged. "It's probably just the wind." Zain: "Or a wild animal. Let's keep moving." But Arina couldn't move. The sound came again. Closer this time. "I'm going to check," she said. And before anyone could stop her, she ran into the bushes. *THE WHITE WOLF.* He was lying in a small clearing. Massive. Bigger than any dog Arina had ever seen. His fur was pure white. But it was stained with blood. His back leg was torn open. Deep. Blood was pooling on the wet leaves. And his eyes. Blue. Like the coldest part of the ocean. They were looking right at her. Arina's breath caught. Behind her, she heard her friends catch up. "Oh my God," Sara whispered. "It's a wolf." Zain pulled out his phone. "We need to call wildlife rescue. Now." The wolf growled softly. Not at Arina. At the pain. Arina dropped to her knees. "Don't," Maya grabbed her arm. "Arina, it's wild. It could bite you." Arina shook her off. "He's hurt. Look at him." She slowly reached into her bag. Pulled out a water bottle and her first aid kit. "I'm not going to hurt you," she whispered. "Okay? I just want to help." The wolf didn't move. Just watched her. Those blue eyes never blinked. *THE CARE.* Arina tore her shirt sleeve. Made a makeshift bandage. Her hands were shaking but her voice was steady. "Shh. It's okay. I know it hurts." She poured water over the wound. The wolf flinched but didn't snap. Didn't run. Maya was filming now. "This is insane. She's actually doing it." Sara: "Arina, please come back. What if his pack is nearby?" Arina ignored them. She pressed the cloth against the bleeding. "Hold on. Just hold on." The first drop of rain fell on her head. Then another. Then the sky opened up. *THE STORM.* Within minutes, the rain was pouring. Hard. The kind of rain that made it impossible to see. "Guys, we have to go back to the car!" Zain yelled over the storm. "We can't stay here!" The wolf tried to stand. And collapsed again with a pained whimper. Arina made a decision. She pulled her tent out of her backpack. It was small. A one-person emergency shelter. She set it up right over the wolf. Using branches to keep it from collapsing. "There. That will keep the rain off you." She was soaked in seconds. Water dripping down her face. Her jeans clung to her legs. "Arina, what are you doing?" Maya screamed. "I'm staying," Arina said simply. "With him." "You're crazy!" "Maybe. But I'm not leaving him to die." Her friends argued for 10 more minutes. Then the storm got worse. "Fine!" Zain shouted. "We're going back. We'll send help!" They ran. Arina was alone. With a wounded white wolf. In the middle of a rainstorm. *DAY 2.* Morning came grey and cold. Arina hadn't slept. Not really. She had sat there all night. Keeping watch. Keeping the tent in place. The wolf was still there. Breathing. Weaker, but breathing. She had nothing to eat. She shared her water with him. Poured it into her cupped hands. "Come on," she whispered. "Drink. You need to get better." The wolf lapped the water from her hands. His tongue was rough but gentle. He never once tried to bite. Arina talked to him all day. About stupid things. About her college. About how her mom said she cared too much. About how she always felt different. The wolf just listened. Those blue eyes on her the whole time. By evening, the rain had stopped. But Arina was shivering. Her lips were blue. She had given him her jacket to lay on. *DAY 3.* On the third day, something changed. The wolf stood up. Slowly. Shakily. Arina gasped. "You're up." The wound was still there. But it wasn't bleeding anymore. It looked... better. Almost like it was healing too fast. The wolf took a few steps. Then looked back at her. Arina stood too. Her legs were numb. "Are you... are you leaving?" The wolf tilted his head. Like he understood every word. He walked to her. Nudged her hand with his cold nose. Arina laughed and cried at the same time. "You're welcome," she whispered. "Go. Be free." The white wolf stared at her for one long moment. Then he turned. And disappeared into the trees. Just like that. Gone. Arina stood in the empty clearing for a long time. Then she picked up her ruined tent. And walked back to the car. *ONE WEEK LATER.* Back in the city. Back to normal life. But Arina couldn't stop thinking about him. The white wolf. His eyes. Her friends called it a miracle. "That wolf should have died," the vet said when she told them. "Whatever you did, it saved his life." Arina just smiled. She didn't tell them about the way he looked at her. Like he knew her name. *THE NIGHT.* It was 2 AM. Arina was asleep in her small apartment. A sound woke her up. Scratching. At her window. On the 3rd floor. She sat up, heart pounding. The curtains moved. And then he was there. Not a wolf. A man. Tall. Broad shoulders. Wet from the rain. Hair black as night. And eyes. Those same blue eyes. He was wearing only dark jeans. And his chest... There was a scar there. Fresh. In the exact same place as the wolf's wound. Arina couldn't speak. Couldn't breathe. The man opened the window and stepped inside. Water dripped from him onto her floor. "Arina," he said. His voice was deep. Rough. Like he hadn't used it in a while. She nodded, unable to speak. "My name is Caliban," he said. "I am the White Wolf you saved in the jungle." Arina's world tilted. "What?" Caliban took a step closer. The air around him smelled like rain and pine. And something wild. "You stayed with me for three days," he said. "You bled for me. You gave me your warmth. You saved my life." He stopped right in front of her bed. "I owe you a life debt, Arina." His blue eyes searched hers. "And I don't break my debts." Arina finally found her voice. "You're... you're a werewolf?" Caliban's jaw tightened. "Yes." "But how? How did you heal so fast?" "Because of you," he said simply. "Your care. Your touch. It did something to me." Silence filled the room. Only the sound of rain outside. Caliban looked at her like she was the only thing in the world. "No one has ever done that for me, Arina. Not without wanting something in return." Arina pulled the blanket over her legs. "I'm scared," she admitted. "I don't know what you are." Caliban's expression softened. "I know. And I won't hurt you." He raised his hand, then dropped it. "From this moment, I am your protector." "Anyone who tries to harm you will answer to me." "Anyone who makes you cry will answer to me." Arina stared at him. "Why?" "Because you saw me when I was broken. And you didn't run." Caliban reached out and tucked a wet strand of hair behind her ear. His fingers were cold but careful. "Now you are mine to protect, Arina. Whether you want it or not." Arina's heart was racing. Fear. And something else. Something warm. "So... what happens now?" she whispered. Caliban smiled. It was small. And dangerous. And beautiful. "Now," he said. "I stay." Lightning flashed outside the window. And for the first time in her life, Arina wasn't afraid of the dark. Because the monster in it was here for her.
