WAR BEGINS

*3 AM.* The phone rang and tore Caliban out of sleep. "Alpha," it was his beta Kian on the other side. "20 wolves from Red Moon are at the city border. They're coming in." Caliban got up from bed. His eyes turned gold instantly. "How much time?" "30 minutes." He hung up. And went straight to Arina's room. Arina was sleeping deeply. Caliban shook her gently. "Arina. Wake up." Arina opened her eyes. "What happened?" "War has started. You have to come with me." Arina panicked. "War? What war?" "Red Moon Pack. They've come to take you." In 5 minutes Caliban made Arina wear clothes. Black hoodie. Jeans. Shoes. "I can't run," Arina said. "You won't have to run," Caliban held her hand. "Because I'm here." They went down to the parking. 4 cars were waiting there. Caliban's betas stood armed. Kian stepped forward. "Alpha, we won't let them enter the city." "No," Caliban said. "If we fight here, humans will die. We'll take them to the jungle. That's our battlefield." Everyone got in the cars. Arina sat in front with Caliban. *JUNGLE. 30 MINUTES LATER.* This was the same place where Arina first saw Caliban. The clearing. But now 50 wolves stood here. On one side: White Moon Pack. White and grey wolves. On the other: Red Moon Pack. Black wolves with red marks. And their Alpha standing in front. Drayven. He was tall too. But shorter than Caliban. His eyes were red. A scar on his face. "Caliban!" Drayven roared. "Hand over the girl. Or we will paint this place with blood." Caliban stepped forward. He pushed Arina behind him. "She's my responsibility. If you want a war, take it from me." Drayven laughed. "What will you do alone? I have twice as many wolves as you." "Wars aren't won by numbers," Caliban said. "They're won by heart." Drayven raised his hand. And the war began. *THE FIGHT.* Roars. Screams. Blood. White Moon and Red Moon clashed. Wolf vs wolf. Caliban ran straight at Drayven. They collided. The ground shook. Caliban's punch landed on Drayven's jaw. Drayven fell. Then got up instantly. He raked his claws across Caliban's neck. Caliban screamed. Blood poured out. Arina watched from far away. Her heart was stopping. "Kian!" she shouted. "Do something!" Kian said: "We can't interfere. This is the Alpha's fight." Tears filled Arina's eyes. Caliban was getting hurt. Because of her. Then 2 Red Moon wolves moved toward Arina. "The Alpha said to grab the girl." Arina stepped back. "Don't come closer!" But they kept coming. Then a shadow moved. _Thud_ One wolf went flying. The other's neck snapped. Caliban stood there. Covered in blood. But alive. And furious. "I told you," he growled. "No one will touch her." He killed both of them. Then turned to Drayven. Drayven was wounded too. They clashed again. Claws. Teeth. Blood. Finally Caliban slammed Drayven to the ground. Foot on his throat. "Surrender," Caliban said. "Or die." Drayven spat. "Never." Caliban let him go. "Go. And tell your Alpha. If he comes again, I won't spare him." The remaining Red Moon wolves ran away. Carrying their wounded Alpha. *AFTER.* Silence in the jungle. Only the groans of the wounded. Caliban dropped to his knees. Exhaustion. Pain. Arina ran to him. "Caliban! You're bleeding!" She tore her dupatta and tied it around his wound. Just like she did that day in the jungle. Caliban closed his eyes. "Are you okay?" "Yes. Because of you." "Thank god." Kian came. "Alpha, we won." "How many dead?" "7. 7 of our brothers are martyred." Caliban lowered his head. "Inform their families. And bury them with honor." Then he looked at Arina. "You're crying?" "You're hurt," Arina said. "Because of me." "Not because of you," Caliban smiled. "For justice." *BACK HOME.* 5 AM. Arina and Caliban returned home. Caliban's body was full of wounds. But he stayed sitting. Arina brought the first aid box. "I need to bandage you." "I don't need it," Caliban said. "I'll heal in 2 hours." "Still," Arina insisted. She cleaned his wounds slowly. Just like in the jungle. Caliban just watched her. "You're saving my life again," he said. "This is the last time," Arina said. "You won't get hurt again." "I can't promise that," Caliban said. "Because as long as you're here, there will be danger." Arina's hand stopped. "Am I a burden to you?" "No," Caliban said quickly. "You're my light. Light is never a burden in the dark." Arina changed the topic. "Zain messaged. He asked if I'm okay." Caliban went quiet. "Reply him." "Doesn't it bother you?" "No," Caliban lied. "I told you. I'm not asking for love." *AFTERNOON.* Arina was sleeping. From exhaustion. Caliban stood by the window. Kian came in. "Alpha, news. Red Moon is planning another attack. This time they'll hit the city directly." Caliban's fist clenched. "When?" "Tomorrow night. Full moon." Caliban looked at Arina. Sleeping. Clueless. "Evacuate the city," Caliban ordered. "Send every human to safety." "And Arina?" "Arina stays with me." *NIGHT. ARINA WOKE UP.* Arina saw Caliban wasn't sleeping. "You didn't sleep?" "No." "Why?" "Because tomorrow night is the biggest war." Arina sat up. "I'm scared." "Me too," Caliban said truthfully. "For the first time." "You? The Alpha?" "Yes. Because if I lose... you'll be left alone." Arina took his hand. "You won't lose." "How do you know?" "I know. Because you said it. Wars are won by heart." Caliban squeezed her hand tightly. "Thank you, Arina." *THE PLAN.* 11 PM. The city was empty. Police cars. Sirens. Caliban and his army stood in the middle of the city. Arina was on the roof of a building far away. With Kian. "You'll be safe here," Kian said. "The Alpha said don't come down from here." Down in the street Drayven stood. With 100 wolves. "Caliban!" Drayven shouted. "Last time I'm asking. Give me the girl!" Caliban stepped forward. Alone. No shirt. Chest full of new and old scars. "She's not yours," he said. "Then die," Drayven roared. And the war began. This time bloodier. This time in the city. Cars destroyed. Buildings fell. Caliban fought everyone. One. Two. Ten. But their numbers were too many. An arrow came. Silver. Straight at Caliban's chest. Arina saw it from above. "NOOO!!!" She ran down the stairs. Without thinking. And stood in front of the arrow. _Silence_ The arrow hit Arina's shoulder. Blood. Caliban's scream echoed through the whole city. "ARINAAA!!!" In 2 seconds he cleared a path to Drayven. And grabbed Drayven's throat. "If you touch her?" Caliban roared. "I won't let you live." He crushed Drayven's skull. Red Moon ran away. Without their Alpha. *HOSPITAL.* Arina was in the operation theater. Silver arrow. Poison. Caliban sat outside. Covered in blood. But didn't move. Kian said: "Alpha, you're injured." "Shut up," Caliban said. "I won't move until she's okay." 3 hours later the doctor came out. "She's stable. But she won't wake up for 2 days." Caliban went inside. Arina lay on the bed. Pale. Weak. Caliban held her hand. "You're crazy," he whispered. "I said I'd protect you. You protected me." He kissed her forehead. Light. Like a brother. Like a friend. "Get well soon," he said. "Or I won't let you meet Zain." Outside the sun rose. The war was over. White Moon had won. But for Caliban the real war had just begun. The war to save Arina.
