Chapter 23Miriam found herself grinning whenever she thought about the time she'd spent dyeing the boys' hair. It had been such a good evening. Well, at least until it had been time for her and Adeline to leave. She couldn't understand why those local men always hung about outside, drinking. Didn't they have homes to go to? They weren't teenagers, they were all in their late twenties or thirties at least, and one man looked older still. What pleasure could they possibly derive from harassing decent, young women while they walked home? Neither she nor Adeline dressed provocatively. They didn't wear make-up or flashy jewellery. They were simply heading back to their flat, minding their own business. If it hadn't been for Mark looking out of the window and seeing them being hassled, who knows
