The Alpha Twins

River POV “It’s the Princes’ birthday today! They’re seventeen! Oh. My. Gosh! In one year, they will find out who their mate or mates will be!” “And you’re hoping to be the alpha twin’s mate?” “I’m not hoping! It’s already known that I will be their mate. Can’t you see? River and Rider are so into me! The twins are crazy about me! I will soon become royalty.” “Duh? I think you are the one being crazy here, Suzette. Wake up from your dream.” I have been eavesdropping on the conversation between Suzette and her friend for a couple of minutes now. It’s so early in the morning to gossip. I should have stopped them, but when I heard they were talking about me and Ryder, I just had to listen. Suzette, Dad’s Beta’s daughter, is indeed delusional. I’ve read from somewhere that it could be a disorder. I think she has to see the palace doctor about that. Never had I nor Ryder thought she could be our mate. We treat everybody with equal kindness and respect. Perhaps we see each other and hang out more because her brother, Sam, is our best friend. Sam will be our Beta when we ascend to the throne by the time we meet our mate or mates. And yes, we are seventeen today. Next year, on our eighteenth birthday, we will shift for the first time and find out who our mate or mates will be. It is usual for twin werewolves to only have one mate, but having separate mates is not unheard of. I don’t mind sharing a mate with Ryder, my twin. And I’m sure he will not mind sharing with me. I moved from my hiding place to get to the training grounds. It was ten minutes before five and I had to be fast if I don’t want to be late for the morning training.   “Happy birthday, bro.” Ryder appeared beside me, running too. Ryder and I are twins. Almost identical. We have the same hair color, dark brown. We also have the same facial structure, except for the color of the eyes. Mine is ocean blue, while his eyes are forest green. As much as we look alike, our characters are so much different. I’m the older twin, so I feel more ‘responsible’ than the two of us. I’m the kinder and more understanding twin. More studious, too. Ryder, being the younger twin, tends to be carefree. He’s kind, too, but at times, he plays with his dominant side by bullying and pranking people. Ryder would usually get into trouble and give trouble to most people. Each of us has our own set of, uhm, admirers, too. Some are nice, some pushy. However, I don’t really bother myself with any girl because I’m waiting for my mate. Ryder likes to play here and there. That’s the only thing that disappoints me because he never takes the mate thing seriously. But whatever differences we have with our personalities, we always have each other’s backs. “Happy birthday, twin.” I fist-bumped Ryder and gave him a bro-hug as we slowed down. Just as we had pulled away from each other, I stood still, looking into his eyes. I cannot move. He did the same as we were put into a trance. I could feel nothing else, just the cool summer breeze in the early morning. I could see nothing either. I could hear nothing but what seemed like wind blowing. Then there’s a voice of a woman, or what seemed like a sea siren. “Twins born on the summer solstice, Be prepared and all As you will be meeting Your mate at the start of fall But you will never know her Until the age of twenty-two. By then, Alphas must be ready For a war that is too risky You will fight a war, At a place that is too far With your Queen by your side, You will rule lands far and wide.”   It took a minute before we came back to our senses. Both of us shook our heads, at the same time blinked our eyes. “What the f**k was that? Did you hear that?” I blurted out to Ryder. We ‘woke up’ holding each other’s shoulder. “You heard that too?” Ryder asked, pulling out his hand from my shoulder. “Yeah,” I confirmed. “It sounds like a prophecy. But I can’t seem to grasp everything.” “We have to hear it again. We have to tell Dad.” We fell silent for a moment and then we realized we were already late for training. Running as fast as we could, we reached the training grounds in under a minute. Everybody was already running around the grounds. Uncle Billy, Dad’s Beta, is our trainer. We do the first half of training with everyone, while the other half we train only with Uncle Billy. The rest of the pack trains with the Gamma. Dad wants us to have the best training to prepare us when it’s already time to lead the Kingdom. “You’re late. Don’t think that I will not punish you just because it’s your birthday.” Uncle Billy said, frowning. “Hundred laps! Now!” “Yes, Sir.” Both Ryder and I replied, then promptly followed the instruction.   “Did we hear the same thing? It was about twins being born on the summer solstice, that’s today, and that’s probably us.” Ryder asked as he runs beside me. “Same thing, bro,” I told him. “Did you get it memorized? I forgot the rest already.” “No. I did not get the whole thing, too.” “ENOUGH OF CHITCHAT, ALPHAS!” We heard Uncle Billy shout. We shut up and get seriously moving. With us not talking anymore, both of us run at pace before going at a faster speed to finish the punishment right away. As we are both alphas and on fire to finish already, we finished at the same time with Sam. Alpha and Beta sons and warriors run at fifty lapses, the other pack members at twenty. “What happened to you two? You were never late.” Sam asked when we were done. “By the way, happy birthday to you.” We are still panting. “Thanks, bro.” Ryder and I responded at the same time. Suzette came and gave her bottle of water to me when I thought she will give it to her brother. “No, thanks. I already have one.” I raised mine to show her. “How about you, Ryder? Want more?” “No, thank you.” He said curtly, not minding her. Suzette looked upset, but still determined. “Happy birthday, Alphas.” She stood there at the table, batting her eyelashes. “Thanks,” I said, giving her a tight smile. Ryder then echoed me. “Suzette, do you have a problem with your eyes? Perhaps you have to go to the palace clinic and have them checked.” Sam said as he stretched his limbs. “No, I don’t have any eye problem. But probably you do.” She pouted before going back to her friend. The three of us just chuckled as we get ready for the next part of the training. The other pack members started greeting us, too. Ryder and Sam took off their wet shirt and threw them on the table. I followed suit, throwing the shirt on top of Ryder’s. At that, I can hear soft gasps and whispers coming from the ladies. They already know that we werewolves have enhanced senses. Even so, they can’t keep themselves silent with their admiration. I don’t mind that, but it gives Ryder ideas. Like now, he pretends to be drinking more water, spilling some drops from his mouth to fall down to his chin, to his chest, then down to his abs. I could only shake my head at his playfulness as he grinned at me after. I can hear soft moans.   After the grueling training and shower, we have decided to talk to Dad during breakfast. In the palace, it’s only our family who lives here. Dad, Mom, Ryder, and me, along with some omegas who serve the family. Not far from the palace is a pack house where single members live, from sixteen years old and above. Those who have families live in houses around the kingdom. The entire pack dines together in the massive dining hall in the palace. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. No one gets left behind. Since the time Ryder and I got inside the dining hall, they did not leave us at peace. Mom and Dad greeted us before breakfast starts. Then, one by one, members would come up. Until Dad had finished eating and we never got to talk to him. “Dad, can we meet you in your office?” I cannot say anything more. I’m sure someone is already listening to our conversation. “Sure, son. What about?” “We just want to talk to you because we miss you,” Ryder replied. I could only chuckle and shake my head. How mature of you, Ryder.   As we got inside Dad’s office, we were surprised to see an elderly lady sitting on the couch facing Mom and Dad. Dad’s office has a sitting area, four long couches surrounding a center table. “River. Ryder.” Mom motioned us to sit down with them. “Is there anything wrong?” I asked as we made our way to another couch. Dad looked seriously at us as we sit down. “Sons, tell me, why did you want to talk to me? Is this something about a prophecy?” Bingo!
