Chapter 1: Awake

Note: This series is a darker werewolf series not following the usual "plot" of fated mates. Be aware of described violence, abuse, loss of mate, and death. -Logan- My daughter had invited me to come eat with her and everyone else. She had invited her brothers too, and we had quickly arrived at the castle. Kai and his father had come too, but as we met up with the others and talked a little, I saw an opportunity to sneak away and finally go visit an old acquaintance I knew was struggling at the moment. Even her daughter was distracted at the moment, so I hoped I could get some time alone with her. Maybe there was a chance I could help her a little. Maybe remind her why she should keep fighting. I knew what it was like to lose a mate. Two, in fact. A true mate and one I simply chose to get bound to. It was not easy, and I could understand the pain Lauren must be in, but when I came down there to the underground hospital, a lot of unexpected things had happened. First, a cat had run by me, almost making me trip as she ran between my legs. I looked after her, seeing her stop and turn towards me. She meowed like she was blaming me for being in the way and then ran off. I shook my head a little and then turned a corner, where I found Lauren out in the hallway looking around confused. She was up?! I couldn’t believe it and froze on the spot as I watched her. I had thought I would find her writhing and screaming as she was lying in a hospital bed, but no, she was up and looked like she was aware of her surroundings. I was about to walk closer when something suddenly hit me. A scent, and not the scent of a hospital. No, this one was sweeter and alluring. It made my head spin and I took in a deep breath as I scented lilacs. It made my wolf curl around inside of me, and I focused on Lauren again, this time with a more focused look. “Lauren?” I called out. She turned and the moment our eyes met, hers grew bigger and my wolf howled inside of my head. Mate! I had a hard time wrapping my head around it at first. I had already had one true mate, and she had turned her back on me. I had had a mate I had been bound to for many years, but she had died tragically in a car accident. Now I had found a new one. A second chance … or was it almost a third? I was not sure but it scared the sh*t out of me, but it seemed to scare Lauren even more. “Oh f*ck …” I heard her whisper. I smiled a little. Yeah, that about sums it up, I wanted to say, but we just kept staring at each other, while Lauren pulled the robe closer around her. “Logan … right?” I nodded. “Yes,” I said. “W-What are you doing here?” she whispered and looked at the ground a little. She was probably used to not being allowed to stare so openly at her mate. I was sure Connor had taught her a lot of things about being a good and submissive mate. “My daughter invited me,” I said. “We are all eating with the king and the rest.” “I see … Do … Do you know where mine is?” she asked. “With the others,” I told her. “Oh …” “Shall I get her for you? Or a doctor?” I suggested. Lauren shook her head quickly. “No, let them enjoy their dinner. I am sure I have caused a lot of trouble already.” “I’m sure that is not true,” I said. “You have been fighting.” “I have not been myself …” she whispered. “I must have been hard to deal with.” “No one blames you for that,” I said. She didn’t really react to what I said and just looked around as if she couldn’t really decide what to do with herself. I was not sure what to do with myself either. What should I say? What could I say that would make all of this better? This was probably not really what she expected to happen the moment she woke up. “I will get the doctor,” I said. “No!” she quickly said. “You should be looked over,” I said. “I’m fine.” I knew she wasn’t. She looked pale and tired, but she insisted on not ruining the happy moment for the others, and I sighed a little. “Lauren, I really think …” “I don’t need you to decide anything for me,” she said. I looked at her surprised, and she seemed to suddenly realize what she had said and looked down in shame. “I’m sorry,” she said. “No, you’re right. I don’t have any right to tell you what to do. I was only suggesting it would be best if a doctor took a look at you,” I said. She again didn’t really seem to react to what I was saying, almost like she didn’t believe me when I said it was fine, she had told me I shouldn’t just decide anything for her. “I don’t want to trouble them.” “You’re a patient. I’m sure it is no trouble.” “Could we … Could we not just wait?” she asked. “I’m sure they will be back soon, and … and I think I need a moment to just … think.” I nodded a little. “Okay then,” I said. “We can wait.” She smiled and looked at me with a grateful look, but then suddenly looked at me a little confused. “Should you not go join the others?” “I think until the king’s brother gets here or your daughter, someone should stay with you,” I said. “You don’t owe me anything, Logan,” she said. “I know what we are, but that does not mean …” “Let’s not bring that up now,” I said. “I am just making sure you’re okay.” She slowly nodded. “I’m okay,” she said. I smiled a little. “That’s good to hear.” The silence stretched out between us, and it was clear neither of us knew how to handle this situation. Of course, I wanted to talk about us. I wanted to talk about the fact our wolves had claimed each other, and what we might see happening in the future, but right now was just not the time. “How long have I been like this?” she asked. “A few months,” I told her. “Months?!” I nodded and she looked very worried. “I … I can’t believe it …” “It’s going to be okay,” I said. “You’re awake now.” She looked at me almost like she needed someone to tell her it was all going to be okay, and she smiled a little. That smile … I always knew Lauren was a pretty female, but suddenly I saw her in a new light. In a light, I had never before seen her in. She was not just pretty. She was more beautiful than words could describe. She was just out of this world. Her daughter had definitely inherited her beauty, but Lauren was just … I couldn’t even describe it, and I felt a strong need rising inside of me to go over there and claim her before someone else got the chance. It seemed like I had a thing for lunas. They messed with my head. I could see Lauren looking at me more intrigued and maybe a little shocked. She most likely saw the need in my eyes and felt the energy change, and she was reacting to me because her scent turned sweeter and it drove me crazy. “Lauren …” I was about to walk closer to her when someone else shouted for her. “Mom!” Angela suddenly came running by me and it broke the moment. She ran over to her mother and the two of them hugged each other, while they both cried happily. I quickly snapped myself out of the trance the beautiful female had brought me in, and looked at the two of them, and smiled. “I will get the doctor,” I said and Lauren turned to me, looking at me like she didn’t really want me to go, but I still turned around and walked out of there, giving them a moment alone.
