THE TEST OF HEAVEN

The announcement spread across the Imperial Palace like a gust of wind before a storm. Long after the morning court had ended, ministers gathered in quiet corners, servants whispered in the corridors, and the noble families sent urgent letters to one another. For the first time in decades, the Emperor had openly admitted that his health was failing. More importantly, he had declared that the next ruler of the Great Tian Empire would earn the throne—not inherit it by birth alone. The balance of the empire had shifted. --- In the Hall of Military Affairs, First Prince Zhao Wei stood before a large map of the empire. His broad shoulders were wrapped in a crimson cloak, and his hand rested on the hilt of his sword. General Xu Jian pointed to the northern frontier. "The Black Wolf Tribe has grown bolder over the past six months. If His Majesty orders a military campaign, this is your opportunity." Zhao Wei smiled confidently. "I have spent half my life training for war. Let my brothers play their games in the palace." He struck the map with his finger. "I will win the throne on the battlefield." General Xu hesitated. "Your Highness... battles are fought with more than swords. The ministers also have their ambitions." Zhao Wei laughed. "Then they will learn to follow a victor." --- Meanwhile, the Second Prince, Zhao Ming, sat alone in his private study. Shelves of ancient books surrounded him, while a game of black and white stones lay unfinished on the table. Scholar Shen entered quietly. "The palace is restless." "So I expected." "The First Prince believes the Emperor will send him north." Zhao Ming calmly placed a white stone onto the board. "My elder brother mistakes strength for wisdom." "And the Third Prince?" "He mistakes popularity for loyalty." Scholar Shen looked at the chessboard. "And the Fourth Prince?" For the first time, Zhao Ming paused. "He is the only one I cannot read." --- The eastern palace echoed with laughter. Musicians played soft melodies while noble sons and daughters enjoyed wine and poetry. At the center of the gathering sat the Third Prince, Zhao Rui. He smiled warmly as he poured wine for an elderly minister. "It has been too long since we last met." "You flatter this old man, Your Highness." "Not at all. The empire still relies on your wisdom." The minister laughed, clearly pleased. After the guests departed, Zhao Rui's smile slowly disappeared. His trusted adviser, Wen Qiao, stepped from behind a silk screen. "You have won another ally." "Have I?" Zhao Rui replied. "People promise loyalty with their mouths." "They reveal their true allegiance only when the throne is within reach." He looked toward the Imperial Palace. "The game has finally begun." --- Far from the noise of politics, Zhao Yun walked alone through the Imperial Garden. Spring blossoms drifted gently through the air, covering the stone paths like pink snow. He stopped beside a quiet lotus pond. Unlike his brothers, he felt no excitement. Instead, he felt concern. His father had never spoken so openly about his health. Footsteps approached behind him. "You seem troubled." Zhao Yun turned. Standing before him was his sword master, Master Li Wen. The old man's white hair swayed gently in the breeze. "I fear the palace is changing," Zhao Yun admitted. Master Li nodded. "It has always been changing." "I never wished to compete with my brothers." "The throne does not ask whether a man desires it." The old master removed a small jade pendant carved into the shape of a dragon. "This belonged to someone who once protected the empire with her life." He placed it into Zhao Yun's hand. "Keep it hidden." Zhao Yun frowned. "Whose was it?" Master Li remained silent. "One day... you will know." Before Zhao Yun could ask another question, the old man turned and disappeared among the flowering trees. --- That evening, thunder rolled across the capital. Dark clouds covered the moon. Inside the Emperor's private chamber, only a single candle remained lit. Chief Eunuch Gao entered quietly. "Your Majesty." The Emperor stood by the window. "Have they all accepted their fate?" "Yes." "And the decree?" "It has been prepared." The Emperor closed his eyes. "Tomorrow, they leave the palace." "For where, Your Majesty?" "For the people." He turned slowly. "Each prince shall govern a different province for six months." "The empire itself will judge who deserves the Dragon Throne." At that very moment, neither the Emperor nor the Chief Eunuch noticed a shadow standing silently outside the chamber. Hidden behind the carved wooden screen, a masked figure listened to every word. As soon as the conversation ended, the intruder slipped into the darkness without making a sound. High above the palace rooftops, the mysterious figure removed a black jade token engraved with the head of a wolf. "The Emperor has made his choice," the assassin whispered. "Our master must be informed." Lightning split the sky. Rain began to fall over the Imperial City. And somewhere beyond the palace walls, an unseen enemy smiled. Before the princes had even begun their test... Someone had already decided that one of them would never return alive.
