THE EMPEROR'S OMNIOUS DECREE
The first bell of dawn echoed across the Imperial City. Its deep, solemn sound rolled over crimson palace walls, golden rooftops, and quiet stone courtyards, waking thousands of officials, servants, and guards. As the mist slowly lifted, the magnificent Imperial Palace stood proudly at the heart of the Great Tian Empire, its towering halls glowing beneath the morning sun. For nearly thirty-five years, Emperor Zhao Tianlong had ruled the empire with wisdom and strength. During his reign, the borders had expanded, trade had flourished, and the people had enjoyed peace unmatched in generations. To the common people, he was the Son of Heaven. To his enemies, he was the Dragon Emperor. But even dragons could grow old. Inside the Hall of Heavenly Peace, silence filled the air. Court physicians knelt with their heads lowered, afraid to meet the Emperor's gaze. The smell of herbal medicine lingered in the room, mixing with the faint scent of sandalwood incense. The Emperor sat beside an open window instead of upon his Dragon Throne. Though he wore magnificent golden robes embroidered with dragons, they could not hide the weariness in his face. His breathing was slower than it had been only a year ago. His once-powerful hands trembled ever so slightly as he reached for a porcelain cup of tea. Chief Eunuch Gao stood nearby, worry etched across his weathered face. "Your Majesty," he said softly, "the physicians advise that you postpone today's court session." The Emperor smiled faintly. "If I stop attending court, rumors will spread faster than wildfire." "They already have, Your Majesty." The Emperor looked toward the palace courtyard, where hundreds of guards stood at attention. "I know." For several moments, neither man spoke. Finally, the Emperor broke the silence. "Have all four princes arrived?" "Yes, Your Majesty." "Then today... the game begins." --- Outside the grand hall, the four imperial princes waited among rows of ministers and generals. The eldest, First Prince Zhao Wei, stood proudly in crimson robes with a sword hanging at his waist. A seasoned warrior, he carried himself with the confidence of a man who believed the throne already belonged to him. Several young generals greeted him respectfully. "The empire needs a ruler who can lead armies," one of them whispered. Zhao Wei simply nodded. He had heard those words many times before. A short distance away stood the Second Prince, Zhao Ming. Unlike his elder brother, Zhao Ming wore simple dark-blue robes and carried no weapon. A scroll rested in his hand, and his calm expression revealed nothing of the thoughts hidden behind his sharp eyes. He noticed every conversation. Every glance. Every whispered alliance. Power, he believed, was won long before swords were drawn. Near the marble staircase stood the Third Prince, Zhao Rui. Surrounded by laughing officials and smiling noble sons, he appeared to be the friend of everyone in the palace. He complimented a minister on his poetry. He praised another man's son for passing the imperial examinations. His warm smile never faded. Yet when no one was watching, his eyes grew cold. Finally, standing beneath a flowering plum tree at the edge of the courtyard was the youngest prince. Zhao Yun. He watched a small sparrow land on the stone path before him. One careless guard nearly stepped on the bird. Instead of ignoring it, Zhao Yun gently waved the frightened creature toward the safety of the garden. An elderly minister noticed the gesture. "A kind heart," he murmured. His companion shook his head. "Kindness does not win thrones." Before the conversation could continue, a bronze gong echoed through the palace. "The Imperial Court is now in session!" The towering palace doors opened. Rows of officials entered in perfect order, kneeling before the Dragon Throne. "Long live His Imperial Majesty!" "May the Emperor reign for ten thousand years!" The Emperor slowly ascended the steps to the throne. Although his movements were slower than before, the authority in his eyes silenced the entire hall. He surveyed the sea of bowed heads before speaking. "For many years, Heaven has blessed the Great Tian Empire with peace." His voice remained steady. "But peace has made many forget that danger never truly sleeps." The ministers exchanged uncertain glances. "The northern frontier reports increased raids." "The southern governors accuse one another of corruption." "The treasury grows weaker while certain noble families grow richer." Every sentence struck the court like thunder. Prime Minister Liang stepped forward and bowed deeply. "Your Majesty, these matters can be resolved." The Emperor nodded. "They will be." He paused. "But not by me alone." The hall became so quiet that the fluttering banners could be heard. The Emperor's gaze settled on his four sons. "My health declines with each passing season." Shock spread through the court. No one dared interrupt. "There will come a day when one of my sons must bear the weight of this empire." The princes remained motionless, though each felt the gravity of those words. "I will not choose my successor based on birth alone." A murmur rippled through the ministers. Instead, the Emperor raised a jade scroll bearing the imperial seal. "Tomorrow, I shall announce a decree that will test every prince." "No titles." "No favoritism." "No exceptions." "The one who proves worthy before Heaven, the court, and the people shall inherit the Dragon Throne." The announcement struck the hall like a bolt of lightning. Some ministers looked delighted. Others looked terrified. Among the four princes, no one spoke. But behind lowered eyes, ambition had already begun to awaken. From behind a carved golden screen, a shadowy figure watched the entire scene in silence. As the court slowly dispersed, the figure whispered to someone hidden in the darkness, "The Emperor has finally made his move." "It is time for ours." Outside, dark clouds gathered over the Imperial City, swallowing the morning sun. The struggle for the Dragon Throne had begun.
