Lisa’s head were bent, her fork lightly scraping the plate. She couldn’t eat to her satisfaction, else Rachel would call her a fat glutton.
Although Amina ate majorly greens and vegetables to keep in a shape that made her happy, Rachel and Lisa had inherited their Father’s ectomorph body structure causing them to almost never gain weight despite their food intake.
It was like a curse to Lisa as she couldn’t eat to her full at their family dinners and her own dinners at home weren’t served well, courtesy of the ‘nice elder sister’.
Uurrgh, however, when her Father home in time for dinner, they were all expected to eat together.
“Lisa. The Jenkins family are having financial issues. They have decided to call in favors.”
Lisa raised confused eyes to meet her Father’s hard ones staring back at her.
Why was he telling her this?
“I – I don’t have interest in working in the company.” She took a large gulp of water at Rachel’s scoff.
Cam Evergreen – Rachel and Lisa’s father looked at his younger daughter with annoyance.
“I did not intend for you to work in my company.” He said, his energy brimming at the look of approval Amina sent his way.
Lisa grasped the edge of her seat. No-one had come to her convocation and she was hoping that they didn’t know that she was done with university.
Her freedom was only a few days away.
“The Jenkins family have requested for us to give them someone to marry.” Rachel said, her fork stabbing into her plate of vegetables .
Lisa nodded absently. Then marry. How did it affect her if Rachel was going to marry into the Jenkins household?
“I will dis- appear. I won’t cause problems for you.” She replied.
Cam looked at Lisa and nodded, a look of satisfaction covering his features.
“Good. I will tell the Jenkins that you are willing to get married to their grandson.” He spoke, turning his eyes back to his plate.
Wait! What!
Was if supposed to be her?
But the Jenkins were a big deal and ….
They probably meant Rachel, never mind .
“Eat some more, before you go telling them there that we make you suffer here.” Amina said throwing an eye roll Lisa’s way.
What?
Lisa choked on the vegetables she had just placed in her mouth, her eyes watering as her throat clogged up.
She fidgeted in her seat, mustering her courage to ask, “Who is getting married?”
“Who else dummy?” Rachel said, pointing her fork at Lisa.
“We have agreed to wed a daughter from this family to the Jenkins family. Not that we had any much of a choice.” Cam spoke muttering the last sentence.
“Should it not be Rachel? She’s amazing! She understands the rudiments of business and being a wife. The Jenkins family is quite large.”
“ You are indeed right in saying that Rachel is amazing but my daughter will not be going to suffer in that broke household.”
So, it’s about suffering right?
That’s more like it, from you all.
“The Jenkins family lacks money now. So instead of money and unending fights, all they have are just unending fights.”
“ You don’t know how hard they’ve fallen in such a short time. They can’t even dream of rising ever again.” Rachel said smirking at Lisa’s blanched face.
“Rachel is the company’s heiress. She needs to be around to inherit it and take care of it.” Cam spoke.
“I can’t .. I don’t want to marry.”
“After all we did for you?! We housed you, clothed you, even fed you! Truly you can’t expect someone with your genes to repay kindness.” Amina said her eyes shooting daggers at Lisa.
Tears filled Lisa’s eyes. Amina’s words cut into her deeply stoking up the hurt continually growing in her.
“I found a job. Dad, I don’t want to marry into the Jenkins household.” Lisa cried, her eyes searching for any sliver of pity from Cam.
“Rachel will not be thrown to the wolves. The company’s money will not be thrown to the Jenkins bottomless pit.
Lisa, you will go and pay back what we owe as a member of this family and that’s final.” Cam replied.
Shivers racked Lisa’s body. She bowed her head, shame filling her. She had put her last pride down, in the presence of Amina and Rachel to ask her father for one thing, however it seemed like he was worse than them.
You end up getting hurt more by the one you care about.
A sob escaped from her lips and she quickly rushed to leave.
“Lisa.” Cam called out.
She turned towards halfway, her eyes staring at the empty wall.
“Reject the job. You will be marrying into the Jenkins family and that’s final.”
Lisa turned away from the dining room, her dinner all forgotten but her stomach feeling upset.
I’m going to disappear. I have to pay grandma’s medical bills.
With that thought in her mind, she walked to her room with purpose, her mind carving out her plans to run away from the Evergreen home.
After all, she was never a member of the house of was she?
