IT’S QUITE HARD TO RUN AWAY, DID YOU KNOW THAT?

1036 Words
Lisa tapped her left foot on the floor, feeling extremely nervous. She’d always been the model student, following rules to a tee and never gone out of the boundaries set around and shown to her. She moved to sit on the edge of her bed and looked down at the sheet of paper she had in her hands. Only now, it was a rumpled piece of paper. Sighing, she straightened out the wrinkles looking at her steps of running away. Meet Raven and discuss stowaway plan Disappear as soon as possible Take nothing to drag you on the way. Travel by train to save money. Withdraw cash and avoid using cards as much as possible to avoid tracking. Her head bopped up and down twice. At least, these are the things that cause cops and others to find run-aways in the movies. Folding the paper and putting it in her pocket, she looked down at her outfit. Dressed in coffee-brown cargo pants which she paired with a white tee, a pair of coffee brown ankle boots housed her legs and a face cap covering her hair. A face mask and scarf was stowed away in her tote bag that sat beside her on the bed. Lisa nodded again. She had gone further to make her bed. She intended to sleep over in Raven’s place for the night after getting the essentials and before her Father would be able to say Jack, she’d be out of his clutches. She had tossed and turned last night, tired about the pattern of her life, but she refused to give up. She needed to make money to pay for her grandmother’s medications anyway as the woman’s pension had gotten ridiculously eaten into by the expensive drugs and consultations. Fisting and un-fisting the palms by her side, she paid attention to the last footsteps and the closing and opening of the door. Must be Rachel. She mused. Time to move. Rushing she grabbed her tote bag and stepped out of her room going down the stairs. “Where are you going to?” Lisa paused in fear, her eyes meeting Rachel’s judgmental ones. “I’m heading to meet Raven.” “You don’t need to go meet the girl anymore. You must be presented to the Jenkins family in the way that would speak well of our Evergreen family .” Amina voice rang out and she came down the stairs. What? They did not go out yet? Lisa looked at Amina as she gracefully glided down the stairs, her stiff face a contrast to her movement. The pearls around her neck complemented the polka dot top she had on giving her the air of a rich working woman. Lisa swallowed, “I’m meeting Raven to discuss our project before we head on to school.” Her feet tracing patterns, Lisa crossed her fingers. I know I lied. God forgive me and let Amina not notice. “Okay.” Lisa quickly swallowed the sigh of relief that was about to escape her lips. Thank you, God. “Rachel, I will take care of this. You should get to work.” “Muuum” Rachel drawled throwing Lisa a dirty look. Lisa stiffened. What did they think of her? An infected Zombie? Shifting on her feet to hide her nervousness, Lisa did not notice the men who entered the house just as Rachel entered. Towering over Lisa, Amina raised her hand and slapped Lisa. Pah! The slap was resoundingly loud and strong causing Lisa to stumble backwards. Lisa cowered, her palm flying immediately to touch her cheek. “You must think me a fool, you dirt bag. Do you think that I don’t know about your convocation?” Amina spoke, her eyes alight with anger, any previous indication of demureness replaced by an unrefined and an ill-bred manner. “I shall educate you on what it means to carry the Evergreen name.” Amina seethed. Her eyes brimming with unshed tears, Lisa swallowed. “That Raven girl has been nothing but a crazy influence on you! If you think I will let you go meet her or anyone else! Then think again. We cannot renege on our promises to the Jenkins and you, yes you, will not humiliate this family.” Amina continued speaking. She moved towards Lisa causing her to cower instantly, her hand moving up to cover her face as a form of protection. Lisa’s mouth formed a small ‘o’ as Amina dragged her tote bag, upturning her belongings in the process. A change of clothes, toothbrush, a book acting as a journal, her saved little cash and some trinkets gotten from her Mum when she was still alive fell out of the bag. “What do you want to do with these in school, pray tell?.” Amina scoffed. Dear God, do you know speaking in nice grammar doesn’t make people nice? Well, maybe because it’s Shakespearean grammar. Lisa’s eyes burned as she took in her scattered belongings at Amina’s feet. “We were to have a sleepover at Raven’s place.” Just go with the lie. When she leaves, at least, I’ll be able to keep my mother’s things. She thought. Amina scoffed and motioned to the two men who entered earlier standing by the wall. “Keep her in her room. She must not come out through out the day.” “Excuse me?! I’m not a kid.” Lisa shrieked “Well, you definitely are not, judging by how you act, w***e like your mother.” Amina dug her hands into Lisa’s pocket and took her phone. Lisa paled. Her mother was her boundary and she couldn’t even defend the memory of her. Waving her hand to the advancing Bodyguards, she moved to pick up her belongings from the floor. “Uh-oh. No, no.” Amina’s slippers stepped on Lisa’s hand causing her to jerk it away in pain. “To your room. No taking of anything.” Biting her lip in anger and hatred at Amina, Lisa nodded, her eyes dry of the earlier tears. She looked at the guards and spoke, “I can walk on my own.” Amina, I hate you.
