Chapter 1: Pregnancy
In front of the CEO's office, Sophie Lang nervously clutched a report, hesitating to knock on the door. It was lunchtime, and her colleagues in the secretary’s office had all gone out to eat. Taking advantage of the quiet, she gathered her courage to discuss something important with Alexander.
She glanced down at the report in her hands—an ultrasound result, with the bottom line clearly stating: early pregnancy, intrauterine gestation, embryo viable, 6 weeks+.
Taking a deep breath, she exhaled slowly, her mind drifting back to that absurd night last month with Alexander. After accompanying him to a business dinner, she had taken him back to the hotel. As she turned to leave, she found herself wrapped in his warm embrace. Both of them had been slightly tipsy, and everything that shouldn’t have happened, did.
Afterward, neither of them brought it up. It wasn’t until her period was late and she went for a check-up that she discovered she was pregnant. She thought, as the person involved, Alexander had a right to know. She wanted to hear his thoughts on it.
Summoning her courage, she knocked on the door, and a deep voice called from inside, “Come in.”
Sophie entered, and Alexander looked up from his desk, asking, “It’s lunchtime. What’s up?”
She gazed at him, taking in his handsome features and piercing gaze as he regarded her. Pressing her lips together, she placed the report on his desk and gently pushed it toward him. “Alexander, could you take a look at this…”
Noticing her hesitation, he picked up the report, scanned it, and furrowed his brow. “Is this yours?” he asked instinctively.
“Yeah.” Sophie replied softly. “Last month, when I took you back from dinner with Mr. Yu Peng…”
She didn’t finish her sentence. Alexander clearly remembered that night; he hadn’t been completely out of it and knew what had happened. In his inebriated state, he had mistaken her slender figure for someone else…
As he continued to study the report in silence, Sophie felt her heart race.
“Alexander, you know I lead a proper life. That night with you was my first time.” The last words came out in a whisper.
Stealing a glance at him, she continued, “I came to tell you—I don’t have any other intentions. You should know, as the person involved. Also, I’m unsure about what to do next.”
After a moment, Alexander nodded slowly. Sophie wasn’t sure what that nod meant. What was he thinking if he didn’t speak?
After a brief silence, Alexander set down the report and said, “Let’s talk about this properly after work. You should go have lunch now.” He pushed the report back toward her.
Sophie felt relieved by his suggestion; it was best not to discuss this now, especially since they both had work to do that afternoon. “Alright then, we’ll talk after work,” she replied.
He nodded again without looking at her.
As Sophie exhaled quietly, she turned to leave. Perhaps it was the anxiety weighing on her mind, but she was a bit distracted. She didn’t notice someone entering the office and bumped into them.
The report slipped from her hands.
Looking up, she was Sophietled to find it was Alexander's mother, the chairman's wife. “Oh, I’m so sorry!” Sophie exclaimed, hurriedly apologizing.
In her fifties, Alexander’s mother was warm and gracious, with a regal air. She smiled gently, “It’s alright.”
Then she bent down to pick up the report from the floor.
Sophie’s heart raced as she realized what it was, and she instinctively leaned down to grab it, but Alexander’s mother was quicker and already had it in her hands.
After glancing at it, her eyes widened in surprise. “Sophie, is this yours? Oh, it has your name on it.”
Sophie felt her face heat up in embarrassment, and she could only manage a stiff “yes.”
Meanwhile, Alexander turned to look at them, his expression unreadable as his gaze locked with his mother’s.
After a moment's consideration, Alexander’s mother seemed to put two and two together. She looked back and forth between them, her voice brimming with excitement. “This baby—could it possibly be my son’s?”
Sophie was taken aback by her enthusiasm and didn’t know how to respond, opting to remain silent.
Alexander approached them and said to Sophie, “You can step out for now.”
Sophie felt a wave of relief wash over her and was eager to leave.
But Alexander’s mother grabbed her wrist and gently pulled her back, smiling. “It seems I was right. You two need to clarify things for me.”
Once they were seated on the sofa, Alexander’s mother looked at her son still standing there. “Come on! What are you waiting for? This is a huge blessing; we should talk about your wedding plans. Time is of the essence!”
Sophie felt a wave of confusion. What was happening? “Mrs. Steele, I think there’s been a misunderstanding.”
Alexander, looking defeated, sat down across from them. “Mom, this is between Sophie and me. Can we please not make a big deal out of it?”
“If there wasn’t a baby involved, I wouldn’t interfere,” she replied, her eyes sparkling as she glanced at Sophie’s stomach. “But now that Sophie is pregnant, this concerns the future of the Steele family. I can’t just sit back.”
Sophie glanced at Alexander, whose expression darkened. Summoning her courage, she said, “Mrs. Steele, about that… Alexander and I haven’t planned to get married.”
“Not getting married?” His mother’s eyes widened in disbelief as she turned to Alexander. “You got her pregnant and you’re not taking responsibility? Are you even a man?” She leaned forward and playfully swatted his shoulder a couple of times.
Watching the scene unfold, Sophie couldn’t help but lower her head, feeling too awkward to look.
Alexander remained silent, merely casting Sophie a cold glance.
After a moment, Alexander’s mother stood up, glancing at the time. “Alright, let’s go get something to eat. Once the civil affairs office opens this afternoon, you two need to register your marriage.”
“Wait, what?” Sophie exclaimed, her eyes widening in shock. “Mrs. Steele, I… this is all too sudden…”
“Enough of the objections.” She held Sophie’s hand, patting her gently. “I understand your situation at home. I know your mother is unwell. Don’t worry; once you and Alexander are registered, I’ll cover your mother’s medical expenses.”
The offer was enticing.
Sophie thought of her family’s struggles. Her father had left when she was a teenager, and her mother, who had raised her alone, was now battling a serious illness. Sophie had worked hard to support them both, but the hospital bills were overwhelming.
Marrying Alexander could mean the chance to provide for her mother’s treatment. How could she turn that down? How could she risk losing her mother?
Determined, she nodded vigorously at Alexander’s mother, agreeing to the plan without even looking at Alexander.
