Sophie listened to his words, feeling as if she had been frozen in place. She was stunned for a moment, feeling a mix of anger and sadness. He cared so deeply for someone who wasn’t even his own child, while she, his biological daughter, had never received much paternal love from him at all. Sophie trembled with anger. “You can throw money around to help her, but my mom has been lying in a hospital bed for so long, and you haven’t done a damn thing! In your eyes, we’re nothing. How can you even come here and ask for my help?” Her father, Mr.Lang, opened his mouth to argue, but before he could say anything, she continued to shout. “Ever since you divorced my mom, I’ve worked hard, got into a good university, all to make sure my mom didn’t sacrifice everything for nothing. I became Alexander’s secretary through my own efforts. What role did you play in any of this? What help did you give me? Nothing! You just show up when you’ve lost money and cause trouble for me and my mom!” “You and your new family are the real family now. If you have problems, deal with them yourselves. Don’t come bothering me. Even if I had resources, I wouldn’t help you. You cheated on your wife and abandoned your daughter. What gives you the right to ask for my help?” She became increasingly agitated, pushing him toward the door. “Get out! You’re not welcome here. Don’t ever come back!” Mr.Lang was shoved out the door, and the loud slam echoed back at him. Sophie stood in the room, hands on her hips, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably. Suddenly, she felt a sharp pain in her abdomen. It wasn’t too strong, but it set off alarm bells in her mind. She quickly placed her hand on her belly, gently rubbing it, trying to calm herself down—her baby was important. She continued packing her things, which were not much—just a suitcase. Just as she finished, she received a call from the driver, Hale, who worked for Alexander. “Ms.Lang, I’m outside your building. I couldn’t drive in, so I’m waiting for you here.” Sophie realized this was Alexander sending him to pick her up. She replied quickly, “Got it,” and headed downstairs with her suitcase. The Y community was the epitome of luxury, a place Sophie had never imagined she would live one day. The opulence here was a stark contrast to her previous rundown neighborhood. Following Hale, she arrived at Alexander’s home. She didn’t know what it felt like to live in a spacious flat over a thousand square feet, but the moment she stepped inside, one thought kept flashing through her mind: “Will I get lost living here?” Hale helped her register her fingerprint for the door lock, then took a phone call and left. Alexander hadn’t returned yet. Alone in the vast house, Sophie didn’t feel any sense of relief; after all, this wasn’t her home. Standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, she looked out to see the river across the way—the night view was stunningly picturesque. “Ms.Lang, send me the business plan for Hongkun Enterprises.” Suddenly, a voice spoke, startling Sophie. She looked around but saw no one; the voice belonged to Alexander. “Mr. Alexander? Where are you?” she asked, her voice trembling. “Don’t worry about where I am. Just send me what I asked for,” he replied. Sophie clasped her hands over her chest and glanced around, but she didn’t see any cameras. Another impatient prompt from him pushed her doubts aside. She turned to the sofa, pulled out her phone, and got to work. Alexander leaned back in his office chair, arms crossed, watching her as she focused on her task. Soon, a document arrived via w******p. “Mr. Alexander, are you working overtime at the office? What time will you be back?” she sent in a message. After a moment, he replied, “I’ll be home by nine.” “Okay, Mr. Alexander.” There was still an hour until nine. Sophie didn’t dare move too much, so she sat quietly on the sofa, scrolling on her phone. Whether it was the long work hours, lack of sleep, or the fatigue of pregnancy, her eyelids grew heavy, and before she knew it, she leaned to the side and dozed off. She didn’t know how long she had slept, but when she woke up, she felt quite comfortable. Unconsciously, she stretched and let out a little sound. “Awake?” A deep voice asked from across the room. Startled, her heart raced as she quickly sat up, realizing it was Alexander. In that moment, she remembered this wasn’t her home; it was his. “Mr. Alexander, I’m so sorry. I was just so tired that I fell asleep,” she said, awkwardly tucking a strand of hair behind her ear and looking down. Alexander furrowed his brow, staring at her for a moment before casually saying, “During your pregnancy, I’ll cover all the expenses. After the baby is born, we’ll get divorced. Regardless of whether it’s a boy or girl, the child will be mine. I’ll ensure you receive appropriate compensation, so you don’t have to worry about that.” He paused for a moment. “Ms.Lang, do you have any objections to this?” Leave the mother, keep the child? Sophie’s mind immediately jumped to that thought after hearing his words. Noticing his serious expression, she couldn’t help but ask, “Why do we have to get divorced?” “Because you’re not the person I want to marry,” Alexander replied bluntly. Sophie’s face flushed bright red. She stammered, “That’s not what I meant. I was just thinking, if we divorce, won’t it be hard to explain to the chairman’s wife?” “You don’t need to worry about that. Just focus on delivering the baby safely; I won’t mistreat you,” he said. Sophie looked down, gently touching her belly, feeling a pang of reluctance. “But why can’t I keep the baby? I want to raise my child too.” A flash of derision crossed Alexander's eyes as he coldly replied, “Do you really think my child is going to live a life of hardship?” Sophie bit her lip, reluctantly shaking her head. How could her humble background compare to that of a wealthy family? Even if she could support a child, the quality of life and educational resources provided by the Su family were worlds apart. He certainly wouldn’t give the child to her. “But... if the baby is born without a mother, won’t that be detrimental to their growth? The family environment is crucial, and a mother’s love is even more important. I don’t want them to start life feeling like something is missing,” Sophie mustered the courage to say. Alexander’s expression darkened, and he coldly asked, “So, are you saying you don’t want a divorce? Do you still want to treat your mother’s illness?” Having worked alongside him for two years, Sophie understood him well. The fate of her mother’s treatment hinged on his words—no matter what the chairman’s wife offered to pay, Alexander was the one in control. Taking a deep breath, biting the inside of her cheek, she felt a multitude of regrets but could only say reluctantly, “I agree.”
