Chapter Four
Ruby
“Chance, this is Captain Jack and his crew, Little Joe and One-toe Pete.” No one on Jack’s crew wore shoes, so I pointed to Pete’s right foot. “For obvious reasons. Guys, this is my fiancé, Chance Duran.” It felt very odd saying that out loud for the first time.
“Nice to meet you guys,” Chance said.
Jack looked at my hand. “No ring? You mean to tell me that you said yes to a man who gave you no ring?”
I wasn’t sure what to say to that. Chance and I hadn’t even thought about a ring. But Chance was quick to say, “The ring is being fitted for her. It was my great-grandmother’s, and it was too big for her. I could’ve bought her something off the shelf, but a woman like my Ruby deserves something with roots as deep as the ones we share.”
