Chapter 1
I'm a fairly well-known food blogger with around 100,000 followers on my short-video account.
I post once a day, without fail, sharing videos of me preparing lunch boxes for my fiancé, Dustin Hayes.
With a pot of mushroom soup simmering on the stove, I took a moment to reply to some comments.
Until I spotted a familiar comment again.
A: [Your food always looks so delicious! Yesterday's rib soup and seafood fried rice were to die for.]
The comment came from a private account named Kally. Her IP address was in Havenport, and this wasn't her first time leaving a message.
For the past year, almost every single one of my videos had a similar comment from her.
It was as if every meal I made for Dustin ended up in her stomach.
As usual, I ignored her comment, poured the hot soup into a thermos, and packed the rest of the lunch dishes.
Then, I headed over to the company.
In the hallway outside the CEO's office, Dustin's assistant spotted me.
"Ms. Brooks, you're here."
I nodded at her. Not many people in the company called me Ms. Brooks anymore.
The newcomers barely knew that I was actually one of the co-founders of this tech company.
Noticing her hesitation, I smiled.
"Is Kally Miller in Mr. Hayes's office again?"
The assistant nodded awkwardly. "Yes... they should be discussing work."
'Should be...'
I repeated those words in my head, a cold sneer rising in my chest.
Sure enough, when I pushed the door open, Kally was leaning forward with one hand on Dustin's desk. She was pressed close to him in an intimate pose, their faces so near that their breaths mingled.
Their eyes locked in a gaze thick with tension.
When Dustin turned and saw me, he quickly backed away from her.
"You're here," he said, his face smoothing over into an expressionless mask.
He didn't even bother to offer an explanation.
Kally had already stood up and said in a respectful tone, "Mr. Hayes almost tripped just now, so I was just helping him up. Please don't misunderstand."
Listen to her polite tone—as if I would be the unreasonable one if I made a scene.
Kally picked up the documents from the desk. "Mr. Hayes, I'll let you get back to work. I'll head out first."
Dustin smiled at her. "We'll discuss this further during the afternoon meeting."
As she passed by me, she gave a brief nod, her eyes lingering for a second on the thermos in my hand.
Once we were alone, I looked at his familiar yet stranger-like face and asked, "Aren't you going to explain?"
"Didn't Kally already explain?" Dustin looked at me coldly, "Since you don't believe her anyway, what's the point of me saying anything?"
Look at that. He actually managed to turn it around and blame me.
After putting up with it for so long, I suddenly didn't want to tolerate it anymore.
I turned to leave, carrying the lunch box, and said casually, "You're quite generous, giving the meals I worked so hard to cook to Kally. Did you really think I didn't know?"
Before his shocked eyes, I smiled and added, "I'd rather feed it to a dog."
Yes, I had known all along.
The girl named Kally on my account was indeed Kally Miller.
She had joined the company a year ago.
Ever since then, she was the one eating the meals I brought every day, or perhaps they were sharing them.
But I didn't care anymore.
I walked straight into Kally's office, swung the thermos lightly in front of her, and said coldly, "Are you too broke to buy your own food? Why do you love freeloading off others so much?" With that, I tossed the entire lunch into the trash can next to her. Watching her face freeze, I calmly added, "Too bad my cooking isn't for just anyone."
Before she could utter a word in response, I turned and walked away.
