Episode 1: Things Change
Chapter 1 NYLA: Cold water slammed into my face making me jolt upright, spluttering as the foul smelling liquid drenched my thin dress. Looking up, Sabrina stood behind my mat, a mop bucket dangling from her hand with a satisfied smirk on her face. Two other maids were in the room. Probably where she got the mop bucket from. “Are you going to sleep all day, Mutt?” At this point I was convinced she was addicted to bullying me. Blinking water from my lashes, I scrambled upright, the soaked mat squelching beneath me. Her gaze burned at me, her lips curled up in a sneer. I immediately lowered my head, and clasped my hands tight in front of me. She’d always looked for reasons to punish me and had warned me on several occasions not to look her in the eye. I already received enough of a beating last night, I didn't want more today. She was Alpha Martin's close friend. There were rumors of them being together but I’d never seen them intimate with each other. Alpha Martin had assured me she was nothing but a friend, however Sabrina kept exercising her powers in the MoonRidge pack house. No one dared to speak up to her. “The Alpha wants to see you,” she said, her voice dripping with mockery and disdain. “Don't know what he sees in you.” Her gaze swept over me from head to toe before she shoved the bucket into my chest and stormed out. I breathed a sigh of relief. If Alpha Martin was back, then my brother Talon and I would finally be free from her cruelty. Alpha Martin had told me we were mates. I couldn't feel the mate bond yet because my wolf had been bound since I was thirteen. At first, I couldn't imagine someone as powerful as him could be mated to a wolfless servant like me. However, my servant status didn't seem to bother him much. He’d promised we’d get married once he returned from his trip. A smile twitched at the corners of my mouth as I hurried to the maid bathroom to clean up. A few minutes later, I slipped into another dress and brought out a shard of mirror from under my mat where I’d hidden it, to tidy up my hair. My pale face stared back at me, framed by thick bushy brows and long wavy black hair. I’d love to give my hair and brows a trim but we weren’t allowed to have any sharp objects. The five runes etched across my chest suddenly flared gold, heat stabbing through me, making me squirm. My wolf, Ray, thrashed inside wanting to break free. However, until those runes vanished, she’d never be free. I shrugged out of the dress and quickly changed into another, one that covered the runes. If Alpha Martin saw them, he might change his mind. With a deep sigh, I ran my fingers through my hair and stepped out, bounding through the hallway, eager and excited to meet Alpha Martin. As I turned a corner, I met him coming my way. His face lit up in a smile and my cheeks heated up. I’d never known what it meant to be wanted until he came along. “Nyla,” he whispered and pulled me into his arms. “Alpha Martin,” I murmured, unable to look him in the eye. “The wedding is this evening. Prepare yourself. It will be a grand ceremony and I don’t want you looking like you do now. You don't want to embarrass me, do you?” I shook my head while wearing a faint smile. “I’m sorry, Alpha, I wouldn't dare.” “Good.” “But...” I added, my lips trembling slightly “…I don’t have a wedding dress yet,” My voice was low. I didn't want to get him upset. He chuckled softly, brushing a stand of hair behind my ear. “I told you to always look up to Sabrina. For one, she wouldn't look this messy and if you had asked her, she’d have provided you with a dress already.” I hated how he always compared me to that bully, but he was the alpha, I couldn't say anything. He pulled me closer, his grip so firm that it hurt a little. “You do realize how easy it would have been to reject you, to pretend not to feel the bond at all, right? You're wolfless, Nyla. Any other Alpha would reject and punish you on the spot but I chose you, remember that. So, the least you can do is make an effort to be worthy of me.” He released his grip on me. I wouldn't lie, my chest ached at his words but he probably said that because he cared what others thought of me. He wanted me out of all the other women in the pack. That had to mean something…right? After he left, I made my way to the garden at the back of the pack house, picked some peaches and headed back to my room. Since I was a pup, I’d always been practicing my alchemy skills. It was the one thing I loved doing and was really good at, so making a peach scented perfume was a breeze. In a matter of minutes, I was done. This way, I could at least smell nice on my own wedding day. Just as I was cleaning the mess on the table, I heard noises outside and listened closely. Hearing Talon’s voice, I dashed out of the room. Talon was on his knees with Sabrina in front of him brandishing a whip when I entered the room. Without a second thought, I stood between them, my arms spread wide. “If it isn't the protective twin sister. You’d better get out of my way.” I shook my head defiantly. “My brother rarely speaks. Why do you want to punish him?” “He tried to seduce me.” “That's not true!” Talon shouted. “She forced me to lock the door and she tried to k…” “Shut it! I, Sabrina, would do anything with a dirty ass servant like you?” It was never about Talon. Sabrina just wanted to ruin me before the wedding. If I went to Alpha Martin to complain, he’d take Sabrina's side as usual, reminding me of how she’d been with him since they were pups. I sighed and helped my brother up. I could never let them hurt him. “I'll take the punishment for him.” “No, Nyla.” Talon caught my hand but I gently slipped free, offering him a reassuring smile. “It's fine. It's my duty to protect you, remember? If anything happens to you, then I’ve failed our dead parents.” His expression darkened but he couldn't do anything. His wolf had been bound by our pack's priestess the day we lost everything and had to run away. The two hefty looking warriors pinned me down. With a wicked smirk on her face, she raised the whip snapping it against my back. A sharp burn made my body jolt. I held my breath, pressing my lips tight, refusing to give her the scream she wanted. Another strike, then a third, fourth. It burned but I held on biting my tongue hard until she was exhausted, threw the whip at me and left. Talon rushed toward me, but then everything went dark. “Aah!” I gasped as Talon pressed a rag soaked in hot water on one of the welts on my back. “Sorry,” he whispered. “We need to leave. That witch won't stop until she destroys you.” “We can't leave the town through land without entering the dreaded BloodRidge pack. You know how much we suffered and nearly died running from rogues until we were captured by the former alpha of MoonRidge.” I winced trying to get up. “Once I marry Alpha Martin, our problems will be over. You'll finally leave the omega quarters.” Talon rolled his eyes and grabbed the bowl, heading toward the door. Just then, the door opened and a fellow servant stepped in carrying a dress. “Nyla, Lady Sabrina said to inform you that the wedding is in ten minutes…Here.” She threw the dress at me and left the room. Talon’s face almost went red from anger as his grip on the bowl tightened. “You’re hurt isn't he supposed to wait until you're healed?” “He didn't know I was hurt.” I tried to defend him but I knew he must have heard from the servants. Nothing gets past him. Minutes later, I was at the entrance of the grand hall dressed in a plain white dress about to marry the second most powerful alpha in the whole of Eastern Canada. The grand doors swung open and as I stepped in, my jaw dropped. It was nothing like I expected. The hall was glowing, filled with flowers, and scented candles. A long white fur carpet stretched down the aisle. Pack members filled the sides, quiet and with smiles on their faces. It was perfect… too perfect. My heart pounded as I tried to find Sabrina in the crowd, but all the faces blurred together, smiling in the same way. Something felt off. Maybe it was my nerves. I quickly brushed the feeling away, smiling as I approached Alpha Martin. Finally, I’d found someone worthy enough to give my father's alpha ring. Talon and I were just twenty three, he needed another two years in order to lead our pack. Until then, Alpha Martin could help keep the seat safe for him. The MoonRidge pack priestess began the process and to be honest, I didn't hear most of the things she said, I was just smiling and blushing hard while staring at Alpha Martin. “Nyla?” Alpha Martin's voice brought me out of my thoughts and I turned to the priestess who seemed to have said something important. “You may exchange rings,” she said. I smiled and brought out the ring–my father's alpha ring. Alpha Martin's eyes widened slightly. “Is that…?” I nodded and slid the ring onto his finger. Then I held out my hand waiting for him to do the same. Instead, he scoffed and turned to the warriors standing behind us. “Seize her.”
