Chapter 6: Sparks and Silence
Back inside the ballroom, the music slowed.
A soft waltz echoed across marble floors, and couples began to sway beneath golden light. Leon held out his hand.
> “One dance. For appearances.”
Amara hesitated. “You do realize I have two left feet, right?”
> “Then follow my lead.”
She placed her hand in his. Warm. Steady. Dangerous.
They moved in rhythm — his steps guiding, hers unsure at first, then fluid. Too fluid.
For a moment, it didn’t feel like pretending. It felt like a memory she hadn’t lived yet.
> “Why me?” she asked suddenly. “Out of all the women you could’ve hired.”
Leon’s jaw tightened. “You were available. And convincing.”
> “Wow. Such a romantic.”
> “You knew what this was.”
But his grip on her waist lingered longer than it should have. And his eyes — once so cold — weren’t entirely empty.
