Chapter 30 Freybelle’s POV “I cannot fight you, Alpha.” I answered honestly. I was worried I could hurt him. I knew there was still hatred in his heart, and I didn’t think he would hesitate to hurt me, even if he needed me. “It isn’t a request. If you truly are Nathans mate, and want to be accepted by the pack, you answer to me.” I wanted to glare at him, but I also didn’t want to provoke him further. He knew perfectly well I wasn’t staying, and he told me I wasn’t allowed. Even if the Luna was softening towards me, he had made it clear he wouldn’t. I closed my eyes for a second, wanting guidance from my goddess or from somewhere. Then I felt it, that power again. The one that had helped me before. It felt similar to my visions but angrier. “Frey, you don’t have to do this.” I heard Nathan whisper in my ear. “We aren’t staying, you owe him nothing.” “Youre right Alpha. I am Nathans mate, and I want to be accepted by the pack.” I left out answering to him because I think he knew deep down that would never happen. He smiled at me, but it wasn’t the friendly smile he was projecting. I felt the malice underneath it all. I immediately took up a fighting stance as did the Alpha. “Fine.” Nathan shouted, clearly knowing neither of us were listening to him. “But I’m only giving you three minutes. First to get the other on the floor is the winner. After 3 minutes it ends no matter what.” He shouted. I nodded as did the Alpha. Nathan blew a whistle, and I immediately moved the ground around me, making it shift and move as I jumped up larger and large mounds, getting higher ground. I turned, noticing the alpha ding the same, he was much quicker than Nathan. I panicked, sliding down the next mound and then using wind to drop all of the mounds causing the Alpha to lose his footing and land a few metres away. He snarled and ran at me again but this time I used the wind to blow him back and then immediately peppered him with water. Like Nathan, he ran through it and nearly grabbed me. I immediately turned, using the earth and wind to help slow him down as I turned around and hurled fireballs round him, creating a barrier of fire, giving me enough time to get away. The air had cleared the last few days and I wished there was snow on the ground of in the air then I could freeze the water but no such luck. I thought quickly and decided to run towards the tree line. I would use the leaves and trees as an aid. Immediately I pulled a tree branch down and climbed on it before it lifted me off the ground. Then I peppered the ground around the tree with water and shouted some words. The grass started to grow as the Alpha met the base of the tree. He laughed and put his hands on the tree, intending to climb it but as he went to lift himself the grass below him was holding him down. Id made it grow round him, holding him in place. He looked up at me and I offered him a sly smile. I saw a split second of fear as the grass climbed up his leg and I second guessed myself but then he raised an eyebrow before tearing one of his legs out of the grass. Dang it, werewolf strength. Was he actually scared or bluffing so I’d lose my footing? “Don’t underestimate us Freybelle.” He shouted as he pulled his other leg free and started climbing. I looked around, realising I had cornered myself up the tree. Crap! I thought internally. I had no choice but to jump and hope he didn’t realise. I showered him with leaves from the tree then jumped, using the air to help my fall be less painful, however before I reached the ground, I felt something grab my ankle and I was yanked to the ground. I landed with an off on top of the Alpha and immediately scrambled off him. “I don’t underestimate you. That’s why I want to help.” I said to him, genuinely upset now. I knew he had hated being held in place. I’d seen the fear in his eyes for a second and I believed it to be true. Instead of answering though, he launched at me, trying to grab me. I rolled out of the way and immediately peppered him with winds again. “Why aren’t you using your fire, Frey. That’s your strongest element, right?” I frowned, knowing he was right, and it was probably the only way I had any chance of winning this. But a part of me just wanted to last the three minutes until the game stopped and no one won. I would take no pleasure in winning or hurting the Alpha and he would take all of the pleasure in me losing. I ran but the Alpha didn’t chase me. He instead walked slowly back onto the clearing, I looked at him confused and decided instead to try and get him to trip. I pulled the earth up below his feet, and he fell flat on his back. That counted right? I turned to Nathan but before anything could be said I was grabbed by the throat from behind and my arms pinned behind my back with one strong arm. “Ok, you win.” I choked out. “Nope, not until youre on the ground remember.” He hissed into my ear. “Then I won, you were on the ground.” The crowd were moving in around us now. “Nope, I only pretended to fall. I knew what you would do. Why wont you use your fire? Scared of hurting me? Or scared you’ll show your true colours?” He snarled in my ear. “I don’t want to hurt any of you.” I said through gritted teeth. His hands were tight around my throat, but I didn’t want Nathan to see my pain. “Even if you are his mate, you’ll never be accepted here and I won’t lose Nathan, I won’t lose another friend.” He snarled into my ear. Then it all fell into place. He was scared of losing someone else. Jack and his Luna were still here but they were shells of themselves after their ordeals. “You are pushing him away, not me.” I said back as his grip got tighter. “No, youre taking him away with your stupid magic. You’ve done something to him. I know it and ill prove it. You might have won everyone else over, but I see you for who you really are.” He snarled. “Ill make sure you don’t take him, one way or another.” Then the whistle blew again, and the Alpha let me go. “It’s a draw!” he shouted before marching away but not before he looked back at me. “That’s not a threat Freybelle. I promise.” I raised my hand to my neck, soothing the hurt with magic as he turned and fled towards the pack house. Nathan ran over to me. “What the hell happened?” He asked, taking my hand to look at my neck. I knew the marks would have gone thanks to my magic. “Nothing, we both weren’t using our full strength, so we had a chat instead. He just told me where I stood that’s all.” I answered, walking slowly towards the group of warriors who were all cheering that I had lasted against the Alpha. “And you didn’t even use your fire magic.” Sam was cheering. I smiled, and part of me wished I had, the part of me that I feared was inside. The part of me the Alpha suspected I had.
