The Woman Who Saw Too Much
Vivienne Knight hated charity galas.
The smiles were fake. The conversations were rehearsed. The rich spent thousands on gowns and tuxedos while pretending to care about causes they would forget by morning.
Yet here she was.
She stood near the entrance of the Grand Aurora Hotel ballroom, smoothing an invisible wrinkle from her black evening dress. Crystal chandeliers glittered above hundreds of guests, casting golden light across polished marble floors.
Everyone important in the city seemed to be present.
Politicians.
Business tycoons.
Celebrities.
And somewhere among them was the man she had come to see.
Luca Marino.
The name alone carried power.
Some called him a billionaire entrepreneur. Others called him a criminal mastermind. Most people were smart enough not to call him anything at all. Vivienne had spent months hearing rumors about him.
Dangerous.
Untouchable.
Heartless.
A man who always got what he wanted.
She wasn't sure how much of it was true.
Tonight, she intended to find out.
The sound of applause swept through the ballroom.
Vivienne glanced toward the stage.
The host was introducing the evening's biggest donor.
The crowd rose to their feet.
Then she saw him.
Luca Marino stepped onto the stage.
The room seemed to change the moment he appeared.
Tall.
Dark-haired.
Impeccably dressed in a tailored black suit.
His expression remained calm and unreadable while cameras flashed around him.
Power radiated from him effortlessly.
He didn't smile much,he didn't need to.
People looked at him the way sailors looked at storms on the horizon—fascinated and afraid at the same time.
Vivienne found herself staring.
As if sensing her attention, Luca's gaze swept across the crowd.
For a brief moment, his eyes met hers.
A strange chill ran down her spine. Then the moment passed. The speech continued.
Vivienne released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.
"Get a grip," she muttered.
He was just a man,a very powerful man but still a man.The evening dragged on.
Guests mingled.
Champagne flowed.Music played softly in the background.
After nearly an hour, Vivienne decided she needed air.
She slipped away from the ballroom and wandered down a quieter corridor leading toward the hotel's private conference wing.
The silence was a welcome relief. She rounded a corner. Then froze. Voices echoed from an open doorway, male voices..Angry voices.
Instinctively, she stepped closer.
Inside the room stood Luca Marino.
The warmth vanished from his face.
Gone was the polished businessman from the stage.
In his place stood someone colder.
Someone dangerous.
Another man knelt before him.
Terrified. Sweat dripped down the man's face.
"I swear I didn't tell them," the man pleaded.
Luca's expression didn't change.
"You expect me to believe that?"
The man's breathing became frantic.
"Please."Vivienne's heart pounded. Every instinct told her to leave now.
Before anyone noticed she was there but she couldn't move.
She watched as Luca took a slow step forward.
The room fell silent. The fear in the kneeling man's eyes was unmistakable.
And suddenly Vivienne understood. The rumors weren't rumors. At least not all of them.
The man standing before her wasn't simply a billionaire.
He was something far more dangerous.
The terrified man continued begging.
Luca listened for a moment.
Then he said something so quietly that Vivienne barely heard it.
"Trust is difficult to rebuild once it's broken."The room fell deathly still.
Vivienne's pulse thundered in her ears.
She had seen enough, far more than enough.
Slowly, carefully, she stepped backward.
One step.Then another.
Her heel caught against the marble floor.
Click.
The sound echoed through the corridor.
Every person inside the room looked toward the doorway.
Vivienne's stomach dropped.
No.
No, no, no.
Luca turned.Their eyes met.
For a moment neither of them moved.
The world seemed to stop. His expression remained unreadable yet something in his gaze sharpened instantly.
Recognition.
Awareness.
Danger.
He knew she had been watching and suddenly Vivienne realized the worst possible truth.
Luca Marino had seen her face.
