The Truth Behind Faces and a Terrifying Secret

1276 Words
(Background Sound: Faint morning light, birds chirping, and the sudden, sharp ring of the doorbell. Ding-dong! Ding-dong!) Narrator: After living through Pari’s joys in the pages of that diary all night, Shruti didn't even realize when she drifted off to sleep. The diary was clutched to her chest, as if Pari’s past was beating in time with her own heart. (Sound: The doorbell rings again—Ding-dong!) Narrator: Shruti woke up with a start. In a panic, she shoved the diary deep under her pillow. Her heart was pounding. She took a deep breath and opened the door. Yuvraj was standing there, a strange restlessness etched on his face. Shruti (Pretending to be sleepy): "Yuvraj ji? You... this early? Is everything okay?" Yuvraj (In a grave tone): "Forgive me, Shruti ji, for waking you. But I needed to discuss something urgent. May I come in?" Narrator: Shruti asked him to sit. Her throat felt parched. Shruti: "Please have a seat. I’ll be out in just two minutes." Narrator: Shruti rushed to the bathroom. She splashed cold water on her face. In the mirror, she saw herself—her face slightly puffy and eyes bloodshot. She dried her face with a towel and mentally prepared herself. Shruti (To herself): "Be careful, Shruti. He shouldn't have even a hint of suspicion that you’ve read anything. If he finds out, he’ll take the diary, and you’ll never know the truth." (Sound: Suspenseful music in the living room.) Narrator: Shruti came out and sat on the sofa opposite Yuvraj. A heavy silence filled the room. Shruti: "Yes, Yuvraj ji, tell me. What happened so early in the morning that brought you here?" Yuvraj (Staring into Shruti’s eyes): "Shruti ji, I’ll get straight to the point. Last night, Varsha was very upset about that box from the storeroom. She hasn't slept all night. She keeps saying that something 'precious' is missing from that trunk." Shruti (Wearing a mask of surprise): "Precious? But I didn't even touch it. Varsha ji was in such a hurry yesterday that I thought she took everything important. What’s lost?" Yuvraj (Quiet for a moment): "There was an old diary. Leather-bound. Did you see it anywhere while cleaning?" Narrator: Shruti didn't hesitate for a second. She lied with absolute confidence. Shruti: "A diary? No, Yuvraj ji, I didn't see anything like that. But all this trouble for a diary? Did it have bank details or property papers in it?" Narrator: Shruti’s question was a 'move.' She was provoking Yuvraj so he would reveal the truth himself. Yuvraj leaned back on the sofa and took a long breath. Yuvraj: "It contained something far more important than papers. That diary belonged to Pari." (Sound: An abrupt pause in the music.) Narrator: The moment 'Pari’s' name left Yuvraj’s lips, a tremor went through Shruti, but she kept her face like stone. She simply furrowed her brows, as if hearing the name for the first time. Shruti: "Pari? Who is Pari? Is she a relative of yours?" Yuvraj (With bitterness and grief): "A relative? No. She was everything to Varsha. Her best friend. People said their bond was something that couldn't be defined by any name in this world. Varsha and Pari were like shadows to each other. Varsha even used to say sometimes that she would marry Pari. Their friendship was that deep." Shruti (Softly): "I see. So, where is she now? Why don't you all live together?" Yuvraj (With moist eyes): "She is no longer in this world, Shruti ji. She is dead. And the biggest thing... this house, this luxurious flat where you are living—it isn't ours. This was Pari’s home. Before she died, she left this house to Varsha in her will." (Sound: Explosive suspense music!) Narrator: Shruti couldn't believe her ears. She had just been feeling the presence of that laughing, playing Pari in the diary. Shruti (In a trembling voice): "Dead? But she... I mean, how could she, so soon..." Yuvraj (Watching Shruti closely): "That is the secret. After Pari left, Varsha changed completely. She is still buried under the weight of that memory. That’s why that diary is her life. If you find it anywhere, please let me know. Varsha’s mental stability depends on that diary." Narrator: Yuvraj stood up and headed for the door. Shruti’s heart was thumping. As he stepped out, Yuvraj turned back and looked at Shruti one last time. He seemed a bit suspicious of her red eyes and swollen face. Yuvraj: "Your eyes are very red, Shruti ji. Didn't sleep all night?" Shruti (Composing herself): "No. It just takes some time to fall asleep in a new house. Plus, hearing this diary thing at night feels a bit strange." Narrator: Yuvraj left. Shruti closed the door and sank to the floor against the wall. Her hands were shaking. Shruti (Whispering): "Pari is dead? And she gave everything to Varsha before she died? Why? Was it truly friendship... or something else? And what has Varsha hidden in that diary that Yuvraj is searching for it so desperately?" (Sound: Silence in the house after Yuvraj’s exit and the faint sound of Mumbai traffic from the window.) Narrator: Shruti stood leaning against the door for a long time. Her mind was numb. 'Pari is dead'—those words were ringing in her ears. But then her eyes fell on the clock. This was her second day in Mumbai, and her university was starting next week. Shruti (To herself): "No, Shruti, staying locked in this house will drive you crazy. Before university starts, I don't just need to see this city; I need to know the truth of this diary. Before Varsha or Yuvraj barge in here again, I have to take this diary out of here." (Sound: Shower and water splashing.) Narrator: Shruti took a quick, fresh shower. The cold water eased her exhaustion and confusion a little. she put on a light-colored kurta and jeans, tied her hair, and took a deep breath while looking in the mirror. She very carefully hid the diary inside a secret zip in her bag. Along with it, she kept the old photo of Pari and Varsha. (Sound: Making a sandwich and packing a bag.) Narrator: She quickly made a sandwich for breakfast and prepared her bag while eating it. She decided that instead of suffocating inside the house, she would go out. Perhaps in the hustle and bustle of Mumbai, she would find a peaceful corner where she could read the next pages of Pari’s story. Shruti (To herself): "Today, I will see Mumbai up close. I’ll find a quiet spot—maybe the seashore or a small cafe—where it's just me and this diary. I have to finish this story before university starts." (Sound: Door locking and the sound of the elevator.) Narrator: Shruti locked the house and stepped out of the building. The scorching sun and the crowd made her realize she was in a new city. She hailed an auto and headed straight for the 'Gateway of India.' The cool breeze from the auto hit her face. The bag was in her lap. She felt as if Pari was also out to see the city with her. Shruti (Stroking the diary through the bag): "Don't worry, Pari. Today, I’ll show you this city. And I’ll complete your unfinished story too." (Sound: Background music of Mumbai’s noise and the sea waves.) Narrator: While wandering the streets of Mumbai, Shruti’s eyes were on the buildings, but her heart was on the next page of the diary—where Varsha and Pari were about to meet for the first time.
