Kane POV
Getting our gear and heading out to the beach, we take turns on the tides and make small talk in between.
"Three sisters?" Keegan's shocked voice causes a laughter from all of us. This feels so familiar, so normal. The five of us together again, feeling like we can rule the world. "Oh, you're forgiven for being late."
"See, Kane!" Hunter looks towards me as I roll my eyes at him. "I told you I would be forgiven if they knew."
"That's insane." Keegan states with a big hearty laugh, one I for one haven't heard from in a long time. Something has definitely changed.
"What's with you, man?" Hunter asks him as Elijah swims back to us. "You seem so relaxed." This feels almost like the old Keegan. It's almost like he never left.
"I was going to wait until lunch." We see that Elijah has finally reached us, just as Keegan looks at us hard in the eyes before announcing his news. "Jessica and I got divorced."
"What!?" We all say almost in unison. That's crazy. We never thought we would see the day. He was head over heels for that good for nothing woman. Seriously, the only thing that woman knew how to do was spend money. Lightly put, the four of us collectively served as more of a parent to London than she did. That's really saying something.
"Why didn't you tell us?" I ask him as I am confused to why we are finding out about this after the fact. We should have been there for him. There was no way the divorce was easy. Actually, there was no way Jessica made the divorce easy.
"I wanted to, believe me. My lawyer advised me not to, you know with all of your track records and all." He sheepishly states. I can't speak for the others, but I get it. We are not exactly living the role-model lifestyle for a child. Surely our reputation would have made matters worse.
"So, what happened?" Liam questions further, but Keegan shakes his head.
"Later. Come on, guys. I swear I will tell you everything at lunch, but for now, let's just surf." We nod, knowing that we will get the run down at lunch. For the next couple of hours, we are back to talking about women and the good old days.
Lunch comes swiftly and we are absolutely famished. We shower and get changed to take a seat on the back terrace with a view of the beach below us. His kitchen produces a tremendous amount of food on the table. After taking fast and large bites of some sandwiches and fruit, we talked about the waves today.
"Virginia never had waves as good as those." Elijah states in between gulping down his food and downing his orange juice. We nod to agree.
"Can you believe it's about to be a decade since we moved out here?" Liam questions us and I blink. Geez, it really has been that long. I haven't been back to Virginia since. To say that I don't get along with my family would be a major understatement. I have been disowned by nearly every member of my family and I have disowned nearly all of them.
The others are more connected to their families, so they tend to visit a lot more. Usually, their parents come visit at least once a year, so I take time off and spend time with their families when they are here, since they practically raised me.
"How is your sister, Kane?" Keegan gestures at me before reaching over for seconds of whatever is on the table next to him.
"Olivia? She's fine. Her boyfriend is about to propose."
"Oh, wow!" Elijah exclaims, as I know he has always had a small crush on my little sister. She is the only family member that I keep in touch with. Everyone else is basically dead to me.
"And you knew?" Hunter asks as he sips his water.
"Well, he asked permission from me and not my father." I nod in approval at this.
"Smart guy." Liam snickers in my direction and I give him an acknowledged nod. My father is a mean bastard, but that's putting it lightly for all the horrible things he has done to me.
"Anyways." I begin to shift the conversation to Keegan. He is the one that invited us out here after all. I am sure that he wants to share his news and I know we are all eager to hear about it. I can tell we are all excited that they are broken up. It means we have our friend back. "Tell us what happened."
"Not much to tell." We all scoff at him. With Jessica's attitude, I doubt the file for divorce was easy.
"Like hell!" Elijah points out. "I bet she lied her ass off to try and get you out of filing for divorce. There's no way she'd ever file it."
"No, no." Keegan lets out a soft chuckle. "I filed for divorce. I almost lost too." Breathing out deeply, he begins to explain. "I caught her cheating again. This time with our pool boy."
"Again?" Liam's eyes go wide. We all figured Jessica would sleep around, but we always thought that once Keegan caught her, it would be over.
"I caught her with so many men in our bed. It's actually ridiculous." Keegan shamefully admits. Wow, guess love really does make you blind.
"How many?" Elijah is as curious as any of us.
"Too many to count." We all react similarly by looking away from the table and breathing in through our teeth. Yikes.
"Keegan, you could have told us." Hunter reminds him.
"I just didn't want the fat 'I told you so'."
"That's bullshit, man." Hunter pushes back against the table in frustration. "We would have been there for you."
"Hey." I stop anyone from getting to riled up. "She's gone now. That's all that matters."
"And you got custody?" Liam points out that London is still with him. That's surprising.
"Kris destroyed her in court. There was no way she was having custody." Keegan smiles proudly.
"Damn, some lawyer you got there." Keegan shrugs.
"Well I was lucky Kris took my case at all. My sister had to practically beg her to take my case."
"Her?" Elijah questions.
"Kris is short for Kristiane." Keegan clarifies for us. "Kelly went to Loyola in Los Angeles and Kris was her mentor there during her law school days. She spoke very highly of Kris."
"Wait, is this Kris Warren?" Liam takes a jab at it. Who the f**k is that? Keegan nods. "Damn, I can't believe Kris Warren is a woman."
"How do you know Kris?" Keegan wonders. "She doesn't like high-profiled cases, but she takes them if both parties are trying to do the divorce quietly. She likes to keep to herself."
"That model I dated a year ago, Portia. She was getting a divorce and told me that her lawyer is ruthless. Kris Warren. Apparently Kris is pretty well known if you're looking for a divorce attorney. She never loses."
"Sounds like my kind of girl." Hunter snickers, but Keegan punches him in the arm.
"Off limits." His serious tone keeps us in line. We are hardly serious with one another, so if he's keeping us in line, it's for a good reason. "She's the reason London gets to stay with me and Jessica's hands are off my money."
"You had a prenuptial agreement, why would Jessica ever get her hands on your money?" Elijah looks wide-eyed at the set of desserts that the kitchen workers set down in front of us.
"She claimed she was pregnant when she signed it, forcing her to be under duress, making the contract void." Keegan replies back as he leans forward to grab a slice of rich chocolate cake. We all do the same as we pick out what we want to finish off the meal with.
"So, what happened?" I question as everyone else seems to have their mouths full.
"Kris. She came in with a barrel of evidence that she wasn't and with the amount of people she has slept with, the prenuptial agreement would have been her way to access my funds for a child that wasn't mine. You should have seen her, guys. She's pretty amazing, but she also scares the hell out of me." Keegan chuckles a bit.
"Daddy!" London's sweet voice echoes from the kitchen towards the terrace. "Mommy says hi." He blinks back hard at her.
"Where did you see mommy, honey?" London is too young to sense the caution in his voice, but we aren't. Each of us stop eating and alert ourselves in their direction. She sits on Keegan's lap as she uses his fork to scoop up a bite of chocolate cake.
"She came to class today." London's small face looks up towards the rest of us to see that we are all listening intently. Suddenly, she feels shy and turns toward Keegan. "Daddy, what's wrong?" s**t, we made ourselves way too obvious.
"Nothing, baby. Go with Auntie Marie. Daddy needs to talk to your uncles, alright." London gives a soft smile at all of us before hopping down from Keegan's lap and following Marie out of the terrace and inside.
"What is it, man?" Liam points out after London is out of ear shot.
"She's not supposed to have contact without telling me first. I am going to call Kris." He dismisses himself and goes to the kitchen to make the call while the rest of us process everything.
"Think he would be down to move to Bel-Air?" Hunter looks sternly at all of us. The five of us dreamed of living in Bel-Air together since high school, down the street from one another so that our kids could hang out and we would never be too far from one another. That was always the plan until Jessica came into the picture.
"We can try, but London is comfortable here. He might not be down to do it." I make a point and nod my head in Keegan's direction.
"Hey, guys. I'm sorry. I'll have to cut this short today." His distressed appearance tells us he's not screwing around. Whatever just happened, he's pissed off about it,
"Talk to us, man." Elijah tries to get him to open up, but Keegan looks like he's at his breaking point.
"Jessica isn't allowed contact with London unless she talks to me first. I can't believe she went up to the ballet school." His grip is hard against the top of his chair that his knuckles turn white. I get up along with Hunter to pull him back a bit.
"What do you need?" Hunter beats me to it. That's just like us, always straight to the point. No use in dealing with a bunch of bullshit and sitting around moping. If we had that type of attitude, we would have never built the largest technology company in the world at the age of 24.
"I need to see my lawyer. Kris is coming back from her lunch to meet with me." Keegan sighs and runs his hand through his hair. "I thought this was over."
"Jessica is trying to claw her way back into your life. She needs money to live the lifestyle she wants and knows that you have a soft spot for her." Hunter tries to calm Keegan down, but Keegan is still pretty peeved off.
"Well, not anymore!" He screams out and we are all surprised at him. Hunter is the calm one and it's astonishing to see him have an outburst, well outside of me, but that's a story for another time.
Keegan pushes us off of him and starts to pace up and down the terrace, continuously running his hand through his hair as we watch him. He starts to mumble to himself, a habit he developed when we were in high school.
"You guys should go before she comes. She's pretty private." We all look at one another with no intention of leaving. There's no way we would let Keegan sit through this one alone.
"No way, man." Liam and Elijah get up from the table to stand united with us. "Whatever you have to go through, we will go through it with you. Tell her we are going to be here."
