Kane POV
"My. My. Looks like the gang is all here." She smiles vindictively at all of us. I breathe out deeply as I try not to hit that smirk off her face. She doesn't belong here, she lives on the other side of this country. What the hell is she doing here?
"What do you want Nora?" My raspy voice sends a prevalent shudder down her body like it always has.
"Boy, do I miss that sexy voice of yours." The three next to me scoff next to me as Hunter rolls his eyes.
"Cut to the chase, Nora." Hunter warns her. He knows something that I don't. Nora must have told him something that was important enough to drag us here.
"Always straight to the point, Hunter." She turns her head to him before calmingly looking her way into my eyes. Her hazel eyes stare deep into mine before she lets out a smile. "Well, congratulations Kane, you're a father."
"What?!" I let out along with the other three next to me while Hunter shakes his head. "We haven't slept together for seven years, Nora." Her grin widens, making me nervous as to what more she is about to say. My heart starts beating fast with nervousness. She's so good at manipulating people that you would think I would be used to it by now, yet she still manages to surprise me.
"Here." She gives me a photo of two boys, twins. They have my eyes, but that doesn't mean that they are mine.
"This means nothing." I spit back at her. "You have slept with my entire family, any one of them could be the father of your children."
"Well, not your entire family, but I did have a paternity test. They're yours." She smiles while shaking her head in pride at this.
"And you never told me?" I grip the photo hard and stare at it even harder. Are they mine? If this was any other woman after her, I would have flat out said that was impossible. I had a vasectomy after we broke up and decided that I never wanted to have children. If anyone were to have my kids, she would have been the only one capable.
"And ruin all of the fun?" I almost grab her in a choke hold but I don't. "So, here's the deal." Nora walks around Hunter's desk to sit in his seat.
"Why now?" Elijah brings up behind me as I am frozen in place. I feel like my heart is both beating fast and not beating fast enough. Everything seems to warp around this knowledge and I can't think straight.
"Because now you finally have something I want." Of course she is going to use this to get something out of it for her. It can't be just about the money, she would have come a lot sooner when she still had some emotional pull on me. Seven years later is a long game that she isn't capable of pulling off, at least not alone.
"I want to see them." I grit out.
"Ah. Ah. Ah. I have some demands first." Shaking my head in anger, I let her continue. "I want to get married and have one big happy family."
"Are you kidding?" Keegan asks.
"Careful." She gets serious about this. "I had to raise two children on my own while Kane here has been screwing half of Los Angeles. You have had all your fun and now I want what is rightfully mine."
"You mean you want a share in one of the largest technology companies in the world." Hunter snarks back, clearly upset about this.
"This company would have been in a big scandal if the public knew I was pregnant with your CEO's children. Your stocks would have plummeted before it could ever have risen to what it is now. I did you all a favor." Nora gives me one of her innocent smiles that used to make me believe all of her lies, but I'm beyond that now.
"I owe you nothing." I explain calmly to her. "I'll see you in court, Nora." There is no doubt in my mind that I am going to see my children. Now that she is here, I know that I have to get those boys, my boys, out of her grasp. I can't let her corrupt them anymore than she already has.
"I was really hoping you would see some clarity, but at least you can never say I didn't give you a chance." She smiles wickedly before standing up from the desk. "I can't wait to see what the judge says when they hear that you abandoned two children with no support. Keep the picture, they are going to be the closest thing you ever get to them."
"What are their names?" I ask her before she takes that final step out the door.
"Asher is on the left and Mason is on the right." With that, I hear her heels click down the hallway and Liam follows her out to make sure she gets out of here. When Liam finally comes back to confirm that she's gone, I finally let out that breath that I have been holding in. I feel like I am suffocating. Elijah has to help me take a seat.
"Kane." Hunter starts but shuts his mouth when he sees how I am struggling to deal with this. "She called the office today and my secretary got the message. I came over here to see what she wanted and she showed me the picture and the paternity test."
"Are you okay?" Liam kneels down to my eye-levle as I still struggle to breathe correctly. How am I supposed to? I left two kids with her, the girl that not only broke my heart, but caused this company to almost fail seven years ago.
"I will be." I breathe in and out as calmly as I possibly can while Elijah hands me a glass of water. I drink it all, but I need something stronger than that. Hunter pours out a shot of whiskey in front of me, but I grab the whole bottle and start chugging, letting that burn take its toll.
A couple of buzzing occurs and we look around at one another. All of our phones are going off at once? What more could be happening now?
"CEO of Bishops Technologies SCANDAL"
"Kane Bishops Abandons Twin Children"
"Shit." Hunter bangs his fist into a filing cabinet as the liquor calms me down enough to the point that I don't care about that right now. What I care about is seeing those boys.
"Call her." I look at Keegan wearily.
"What?" Keegan looks at me strangely, but I know he knows what I am talking about. "Seriously?" He flicks an eyebrow at me. "She will never take this case now. It has already made the news."
"Do it." Elijah joins me, asking Keegan to call Kris. If she is as good as they say, then I need that call to be made. Anything it takes. I can't let Nora win, not this time.
Kris POV
The tv screen in the lobby of my law office is filled with the scandal surrounding Kane and Bishops Technologies, but I'm not exactly surprised. Two weeks ago, I had a meeting with the girl who claimed that she carried Kane's babies to term and raised them for the past six years.
"You're not going to take the case?" Nora asks me as she crosses her legs and her eyes are no longer the kind innocent ones she tried to play off. Having been at this job for two years, I can detect when someone is a snake and she practically screamed it the moment she walked in.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Andino. I don't take cases that will go through the holidays for personal and professional reasons." I clarify for her, but she scoffs at my response instead.
"This is going to be the biggest case of the century. You would make millions off of just this case and then be famous." Smiling lightly at her, I do my best to not sound terribly disrespectful.
"I have all the fame I need, otherwise, you wouldn't have come knocking on my door." I respond to her as I look down at the clock. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have my next client waiting."
"You're going to regret this." I seriously doubt that I will. The holidays are still hard for me and I couldn't do that to my team. Their workload would be excruciating if I were to be out of it and have to take care of this huge case. Plus, her case is complicated. Kane didn't know he had children. Though he would probably have to pay back a lot of child support, there would be a lot of investigative work involved. But the main reason I won't take her case is that I don't trust her. She seems to think her children are pawns and I refuse to represent a client that would treat children in that way.
"Isn't that the lady that came in two weeks ago?" Mateo asks after sipping on his coffee. It's a Saturday today but we have our monthly family meeting, to help with morale and such in the office. Mateo is our public relations person and he is damn good at it. When clients want something on the hush hush, he is the person to go to.
"Yes, she is." Before Mateo can ask me anything else, Jenny waves her hands over from her desk, grabbing both of our attentions. I walk over to her curiously.
"It's Mr. Hendricks." Keegan? I guess I should have assumed that I would be their first call when this blows up. Nora is taking this to the big stages and I can tell that the social media backlash is going to kill their stocks.
"Patch him to my office." I inform her as I make my way inside my office. Most of the walls in my office are made with one way glass. I can see out there, but they can't see inside. The same goes for the office itself. People passing by can't see inside the office, but we can see out there. Taking a seat, I put the phone on speaker and put on the news on my tv on mute so that I could watch while talking to him.
"Kris." I hear Keegan's nervous voice come through. He should be nervous, for his friend at least. This is not the way he should be finding out. I hope Nora at least warned him before throwing this grenade at Kane.
"Yes." Letting him know that I am listening as I await his next words.
"Have you seen the news?"
"It's kind of hard to miss, Keegan." Silence from the other end makes me tap my foot as I see Nora take the spotlight and start answering questions on live tv. Shaking my head in disapproval, I continue to wait for Keegan to say something back to me.
"Kane needs your services."
"Keegan.." I begin to say, but he interrupts me.
"Kris, please." Pausing at the desperateness in his voice, I can tell that they are struggling, but I can't. If I do this, I could jeopardize my career and those at my firm. On top of that, this case is absolutely huge and I don't know if I have all the manpower I need now that this is on a national scale.
"I appreciate that you thought of me, but I can't. I can recommend you someone who would be great." Some ruffling is heard with the phone and I assume that I was on speaker phone and someone is now taking me off. That's just great. I breathe out hard as I see the twin boys are on the tv now, but they look terrified to have so many cameras and microphones pointed at them. Those poor kids shouldn't have to deal with this publicly.
"Ms. Warren." That raspy voice comes through and I know that's Kane. His worried voice suddenly makes me worried too. It's a strange feeling to be affected by just two words, his two words.
"Mr. Bishops."
"I am asking you to do this for me and you will be compensated accordingly." At least he didn't try to shove the money down my throat, but no amount of money will put me on this case.
"Like I told Mr. Hendricks, I don't believe that I would be able to represent you well. I can recommend a fellow colleague who is very good."
"But not you." He clarifies with a statement instead of a question.
"No, sir."
"I understand. If you can send Keegan the information, I will appreciate your help." I was expecting him to be more pressing about it, but I guess he's not pushing it. At least, he sort of has boundaries.
"Understood." I hang up the phone and text Keegan the number for Henry, a very good friend who graduated alongside me at Loyola. He is very good and works at a corporate firm similar to Andrew, but he has a perspective that's harder for people to see. Again, he is not me, but he is one of the best in the city, so I know Kane is in good hands. But something about the image of those kids still bother me deep inside, making me second guess if this really is the best decision.
