Chapter 13

2100 Words
Kris POV Kane's largely build body is directly in front of me as he covers me from the number of people stepping into this elevator. Staring directly up at him, our eyes meet and stay with one another. I break eye contact to see that more people are entering the already crowded elevator. Though he ensures that his body isn't touching mine, I can tell that he is uncomfortable as well. While people continue to shuffle in, I instinctively place my hand on his hard waist and pull him towards me. Hitting his body onto mine with a slight thud, our chests are pressed tightly to one another. s**t, I pulled too hard. I look up to see his hard chiseled features looking anywhere but at me. When he notices that I am staring at him, he looks down at me. He lets out a breathe that fans across my face, making my face tingle. Biting down on my bottom lip, I try to suppress any of my discomfort, but truth to be told, I am not that uncomfortable. I look away from him only for him to bend down to my ear, whispering so lightly that I shudder. "Sorry." He whispers slowly that I feel this strange flutter in the pit of my stomach. I nod in understanding. I mean there's nothing he could have done about it. Kane has to have noticed my shudder. The ding on the elevator leads to the flood of people rushing off the crowded elevator. His body slowly lays off of me as we exit the elevator alongside everyone. Side by side, we walk quietly to his car and hop inside. The air is thick with tension as car takes off. The light from the sun is already gone as we make our way to the city. "I-" Before I can apologize for whatever happened in the elevator, my phone rings. s**t. It's Ivy, my best friend. "Hello?" I am met with a loud scream of excitement. Taking the phone immediately away from my ear at the loud sound booming through, I wait until the screaming is done, but I spot Kane taking a glance at me. Mouthing a quick apology to Kane, I put the phone back to my ear. "I'm getting married!" Ivy squeals excitedly. "Oh! That's fantastic!" I side eye to see Kane shifting in his seat, trying to not listen to my conversation. "I love you, but I have a client with me right now. Celebrate over brunch tomorrow, say 10:30?" "Yes! Oh my God, let's go to the Intercontinental. It has an amazing view!" I hesitate. That's a pretty upscale place to make a reservation so last minute. "I don't know. The Intercontinental might be kind of busy tomorrow morning. It is kind of short notice and a Saturday..." Kane waves his hand over mine to stop me from talking. "Go." I c**k my head at him. What is that supposed to mean? "Excuse me?" He parks the car in the front of the building and we both get out of the car. The valet takes the keys from Kane and we walk alongside one another as I hold the phone to my ear. Ivy is humming along happily. "I'll make the reservation for you. Just go tomorrow." I stop in my tracks and he looks back at me, "I don't-" Before I start to argue with him, he turns back to walk into his building. I scoff at his response and go back to my phone call. "Nevermind. I guess we can go tomorrow." The valet gets my car from their lot and I step inside my own vehicle to start heading home. Settling into my seat at a very nice table in the corner of the restaurant, Ivy seems to be confused as we order our drinks. I didn't have a problem with the reservation, which is nice, but I still feel strange about it. Not one to take a handout, but he didn't exactly let me reject his offer. Plus, this is about Ivy, not me. "How did you swing this?" I shrug at her and give her a light smile. "It's complicated." "It always is with you." We laugh and get caught up as Ivy tells me about how Nick, her now fiance, proposed to her last night. I helped pick out the ring and how everything was going to go down, but Nick chose the date for when he was going to do it. It is about time though. "And what about you?" Ivy asks me as she sets down her mimosa glass. "What about me?" She's been my best friend since we started high school over a decade ago. Our families have been friends since her family moved to LA. I can't hide anything from her. "You're just different today. I don't know what it is, but something is definitely different." "Just that huge case that I am dealing with." Quick to dismiss it, she accepts my answer but still appears skeptical. "Kris, will you be my Maid of Honor?" "Of course!" We always talked about the day that we would get married and be each other's maid of honor, though I think she got the short end of the stick because I didn't exactly have a typical wedding. "Great! Nick is asking Henry to be his best man. I laugh at this. "Henry is a great guy. I'm sure we will get along fine." "Kris, you know he wants more than for you guys to just get along fine." I sigh and shake my head. "Henry is great, but he's not-" "Ethan." She finishes for me. "Nobody is Ethan and nobody is going to replace him. But Kris, he would want you to move on and be happy." "I know that." I stare hard at my mimosa glass. "I just feel like I am betraying him if I do." "But you would be betraying yourself if you stopped yourself from being happy." Placing a hand in mine, I squeeze it and breathe out a choking breath. "I'll try." I promise her as we continue on with our brunch. Kane POV Kris maneuvers the movers to move out most of my furniture and in with my new set of furniture. I won't lie she has a nice touch because it definitely is more homey in here, with a touch of myself in everything. "I think we are almost done here." Kris comes up to the kitchen counter and sets her iPad down to take a breather. I don't blame her, she's been up here since early in the morning. It's well past three now. "Have you eaten?" Her tired eyes match her exhausted body. Delicately, she gulps down and I hand her a glass of water before requesting the chef to whip something up for her. "I'm fine." Kris tells the chef, but I nod at him to go ahead and continue to cook something. Before she gets a chance to say anything back at me, Magnus comes up and nuzzles against Kris' leg. What is with him? He never likes any strangers in the house, but he's actually calm around Kris. She bends down and pats him on the head and then rushes to get up, only to lose her balance. Though Kris' arm catches the kitchen island to break her fall, I grab her waist to keep her up. "I think I just need to sit." Her hands try to take mine off of her, but I am not budging. Instead, I lead her to the couch and sit her down. Not saying another word, I bring her a pitcher of lemonade and a glass alongside it. As she sits and rests, I have Gloria direct everyone to where they need to set everything. Within another thirty minutes, the chef sets two plates for Kris and myself while going back to preparing a dinner for the movers. The chef is only here when I have people over since I don't like cooking for other people. He was here for lunch too, but Kris took a phone call in my office when it happened. Putting the plate in front of her, I notice that she fell asleep on the couch. Magnus is by her feet, laying down peacefully. Great, I feel like I have to get him re-trained or something. She shifts herself into a more comfortable position while releasing shallow breaths. The last three days has been a lot for her I bet. Nonstop phone calls with hospital staff, school administrators, and even nannies. I have been at the office working on our new project while she's been out here saving my ass. Slowly, her hair starts to cover up her face and I extend my hand out towards her. With my fingers, I gently tuck her hair back, trying not to wake her. "Woah!" Hunter's voice echoes through the living room and Kris' eyes flutter open and sees my hand near her face. She backs away from me and immediately gets up from the couch, shaking her head to wake herself up. Damn it, Hunter. "This doesn't even look like your place anymore." Elijah comments as they walk through the living room, examining all the changes Kris and I have made. "If you guys will excuse me, I need to make a call." Kris leaves the room and goes into the office to make that call, while the rest of the boys sneak an eyebrow up at me. "Man, you got to be careful." Liam warns me. "If you offend her, she might not represent you." "It's not like that. She fell asleep and I was checking on her." "Good because whatever she is doing, it's working." Keegan shows me his phone and I see that the press is eating this up. I really wish that they would leave the kids out of this, but it doesn't look like that's going to go away anytime soon. "She works fast." Hunter points out as he lays down in my couch. He smirks and I know he's just going to say something vastly inappropriate and I don't need that right now, especially since that night in the elevator. My hard d**k was practically stabbing her in the elevator, but I couldn't exactly help it. Her seductive body was laid against mine and I tried everything to not think about her in that way. I almost took her right there in that elevator. "Kane." Kris' soft voice bellows out to me and we all turn to face her. "Asher and Mason are meeting us at Santa Monica beach tomorrow, 10 AM." She heads towards her iPad and puts it in her tote. "You only get them until 2 PM though." I can tell she is upset about just that alone. "I'll pick you up at 9." "See you then." She is on her way out, but then turns to the rest of the guys. "I'll see you guys later." Waving a polite goodbye, she is out of the house. "Did she seem mad to anyone else?" Keegan brings up the very question I have. Everyone else seems to have picked up on this as well. Whatever happened on that phone call must not have been good. "Ask her about it tomorrow." Liam suggests to me, but I shake my head. "If it was something important or about this case, she would have said something. She knows I don't keep secrets from you guys." "Maybe she's worried how you'll take it, considering the last time." Hunter says sarcastically at me, referring to when I punched through the window of my car when we were at her office. "No sugarcoating. No bullshit." I remind them of the clause that I added to the contract. They drop it for now, but I can't get this nagging feeling that I have that something is wrong. Right on the dot, I get to her office at 9 AM and text her to let her know I am outside, but no answer back and no one exiting the office for five minutes. That's unlike her. She is practically attached to the hip with her phone or her Apple Watch. If she needed more time, she would have said something. I turn off the ignition and go inside only to hear a loud smack occur. Turning towards the noise, I see that Kris slapped Andrew, Nora's lawyer, across the face. Her face is contorted with anger. There are dozens of bouquets of flowers on Jenny's desk. What the hell?
