The Shadow under the Crescent
The cold night air of the Ridge Mountains carried the sharp scent of damp pine and crushed ferns, but Clara felt only the scorching heat of her own ragged breath. She pressed her spine tightly against the rough, moss-covered bark of an ancient oak tree, desperately trying to keep her posture still. Her hands flew to her mouth, fingers trembling as she forced herself to muffle the sound of her gasping lungs and the frantic hammering inside her chest.
Through the dense, silver-laced mist creeping along the forest floor, heavy footsteps crunched rhythmically against dry leaves and twigs. They weren't the clumsy, heavy footsteps of a human hunter. The stride was too measured, too fluid, and terrifyingly light for a creature of his massive size. Each step seemed to shake the very foundation of the earth beneath her boots.
"Hide all you want, little bird," a deep, velvet voice echoed softly through the canopy of towering trees. It was laced with a natural, absolute authority that made Clara’s very core vibrate with instinctual terror. "Your scent betrays you long before your footsteps even touch the mud."
Clara swallowed hard, her throat painfully dry. Her heart hammered like a trapped bird against her ribs. Alpha Caleb.
Just three hours ago, Clara was nobody in the grand hierarchy of the Silver Crest Pack. She was merely the quiet orphan girl living on the dusty outskirts of the outer village—the one who spent her days gathering medicinal herbs, tending to the infirm elders, and carefully keeping her head down so as to never attract the wrath of the pack’s elite.
Tonight, however, was the Blood Moon Gathering. It was the solemn night when the Silver Crest pack gathered at the sacred plaza to offer their seasonal harvest and pay homage to their ruler. Clara was never supposed to be noticed. Her plan had been simple: hand over her bundled baskets of dried lavender and silver-leaf herbs, bow her head in respect, and quietly slip back into the shadows of her humble wooden cottage.
Instead, when Alpha Caleb had descended from the high balcony of the pack house, a sudden silence had blanketed the hundreds of wolves gathered in the square. His presence alone was overwhelming. And then, without warning, his piercing, luminous blue eyes had swept across the sea of faces—and locked dead onto hers.
The intensity of his gaze had felt like a physical strike. It was suffocating, possessive, and charged with something primal that terrified her to her very soul. Panicked by the sudden weight of his undivided attention and the murmurings of the crowd, Clara had turned on her heel and bolted into the dark, unforgiving woods.
Now, the shadows between two giant pine trees shifted. A tall, formidable figure stepped slowly out of the swirling mist.
Caleb wore no royal mantle or decorative armor tonight—just a fitted black tunic that stretched taut across his broad shoulders and dark leather trousers tucked into heavy riding boots. His dark hair was wind-blown and wild, framing a strong, angular jawline set in an unyielding, stoic line. But it was his eyes—glowing with an unnatural, electric blue under the moon's pale light—that rooted her to the spot.
"Why run?" Caleb asked softly, stopping a mere two paces away. The sheer magnitude of his aura seemed to suck the very oxygen straight out of Clara’s lungs. "Do I terrify you that much, Clara?"
She widened her hazel eyes, a sharp gasp escaping her lips. Shock rippled through her—not just from his proximity, but from the fact that he actually knew her name.
"You... you shouldn't be out here, My Lord," she managed to whisper, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to sound composed. "The pack elders... the feast in the square... they are all waiting for you."
"The elders obey my command," Caleb interrupted, his tone gentle yet carrying an undeniable edge of supreme dominance.
He took another step forward, closing the remaining distance between them until the pure, radiating heat from his massive chest cut right through the freezing night air chilling her skin. Clara’s breath caught in her throat. She could smell him now—a intoxicating blend of crisp mountain air, dark cedarwood, and the faint, dangerous undertone of ozone before a lightning strike.
Slowly, deliberately, Caleb raised his right hand. Clara winced slightly, expecting the harsh grip of a conqueror, but his calloused, long fingers merely brushed a stray strand of reddish-brown hair away from her face, tucking it gently behind her ear. His knuckles lightly grazed her cheekbone, and the contact sent a violent, electric spark shooting straight down her spine.
It wasn't a spark of terror. It was something far deeper, far more ancient, and infinitely more dangerous.
Clara gasped, her eyes locking onto his. "My Lord—"
"There is a storm gathering on the horizon of these lands, Clara," Caleb murmured, his voice dropping into a fierce, quiet whisper that sent goosebumps racing down her arms. His thumb traced her jawline with agonizing slowness. "Politic rivalries are rising, and the old treaties are crumbling. Tonight, fate didn't just bring me to the village square to inspect crops. Fate handed me the only person in this entire realm worth protecting."
He leaned down, his warm breath fanning against the sensitive skin of her shell-like ear. "You think you ran away from me tonight," he whispered, his tone rich with a solemn, unspoken vow. "But the truth is, Clara... I have been searching for you long before you even knew my name. You belong in my shadow now. Stay by my side, or the dark forces moving through these woods will devour us both."
Clara opened her mouth to speak, to demand an explanation for his cryptic words and the impossible pull humming in her blood, but a blood-curdling howl suddenly sliced through the quiet night air.
It echoed from the jagged rocky ridge above them—a sharp, frantic warning call from his perimeter sentries.
Caleb’s posture instantly shifted. The tender warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by the lethal, cold gaze of the Silver Crest Alpha. The fierce wolf spirit within him surged to the surface, muscles tensing as he forcefully yanked Clara behind his broad back, shielding her completely from the shadows of the dark forest.
"Stay behind me," Caleb growled, drawing a silver-bladed dagger from his belt as rustling footsteps approached fast from the dark brush. "It seems our enemies have already tracked us."
