Survive and Thrive

Chapter - 3

What's your name?" I asked the boy. He was now sitting next to the girl watching her anxiously. "My names Dean" he said. "Ok, Dean I'm Julie and he's Sam" I said. "What happened to you all?" I asked. "Well, after the sickness spread and people died, I went out to find food and I found that little girl instead (he pointed to the baby) then I took her home, I lived with her for a couple of days and I went out again for food so I could feed her and I met Lia. We decided we would stick together till we could find more kids. But then when we were out and searching for stuff this morning, a huge bear was out and about. We tried to hide but it attacked us. I managed to keep the baby safe. But the bear went for Lia instead. It struck my

head and I was knocked out and when I was conscious, I saw Lia just lying there. So I tried to get us to a house and yours was the closest. I guess after dragging Lia there and finding out the door wouldn't open, I just laid down for a moment and I was knocked out." He said.

While we were listening to his story Lia came to consciousness. She tried to sit up and groaned. Sam reached for the painkillers and I brought some water. She wasn't fully conscious which made it hard to get her to swallow the pill. "Let me try" Dean said. "Hey Lia, take the pill the pain will stop" he said making sure he was speaking into her ear. She swallowed the pill and drank the water. "You must be hungry" I said an I got up and grabbed food for him and a banana for the baby. "She can't eat solids yet" Dean said. "Oh ok, what can I give her?" I asked. "Well, I can mash the banana and give it to her" he said. He mashed up the banana and woke the baby up and fed her the banana. "Why don't you rest? You can go upstairs" I said once he had finished feeding her. "I would like to rest but I will just sleep here if you don't mind, I don't want to leave her" he said. "Okay, we will take the baby" Sam said. " I grabbed the baby and Sam and I went into one of the bedrooms.

"Well this is crazy" he said. "Yeah I know" I said trying to get the baby to sleep. Sam sat on the bed. "Gimme the baby" he said. I passed him the baby and it stopped crying as soon as I gave her to Sam. "Hey, you have a thing with babies huh" I said. "Yeah" he said with a faraway look. He got her to bed. Then I helped him upstairs to take a shower. Once he was out I went in for a bath too. We went down just to see Dean knocked out on the couch. Then the baby started crying. We went in and smelled something foul. "It's probably her diapers" Sam said. "Oh no, we don't have diapers" I said. "For now we will have to use cloth" he said. Then we took her upstairs washed her clean and I brought some cloth which Sam wrapped around her waist. "Come down quick" Dean shouted. I held the baby and helped Sam down the stairs as quick as I could. Lia was awake. But she didn't look any better. Dean hugged her. "I'm so glad your awake." She tried sitting up and screamed in pain.
