I fell in love with my brother's wife
Caleb returns home after 5 years to run the family business. Meets his brother Ethan's wife, Mara, for the first time.
Caleb and mara were forced to work together on a charity event. Late nights, shared secrets. He realizes she’s lonely in the marriage .
Caleb tries to pull away. Ethan is cold, always traveling. Caleb and Mara become friends/confidants.
So one rainy night, lines blur. Caleb admits feelings. Mara pulls back but doesn’t hate him.
Several months pass Ethan then finds out something is off with his brother and his wife so he confronts Caleb.
Caleb has to choose: family or love.
They choose to do the right thing and walk away, but the love changes them forever.
I hadn’t been home in five years.
Five years of board meetings in New York, hotel rooms that all looked the same, and phone calls that ended with “see you at Christmas, maybe.”
My brother Ethan picked me up from Pago Pago International. He looked older. Sharper suit. Tired eyes.
“Good to have you back, little brother,” he said, gripping my shoulder. The same grip he used when we were kids and he was protecting me from bullies.
“Thanks for the job,” I said. “Running the resort with you. I didn’t think you’d actually offer.”
“It’s family business,” he said simply. Then he glanced at the passenger seat. “Oh. Mara, this is Caleb. My brother.”
She turned.
And that’s when it happened.
Mara. Ethan’s wife.
She wasn’t what I expected. Ethan always talked about her like she was an accessory. “My wife, Mara. She handles the charity stuff.”
But she had this quiet kind of beauty. Dark hair pulled back, no makeup, wearing jeans and a resort polo that was two sizes too big. She smiled, and it didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“Caleb,” she said. Her voice was soft. “Ethan talks about you all the time.”
“I doubt that,” I said, and immediately regretted how it sounded.
She laughed once. “He does. The genius brother. The one who got out.”
The ride to the resort was 20 minutes of silence. Ethan took calls. Mara stared out the window. I watched the rain start to hit the windshield and thought: I’m going to be working with her. Every day.
I didn’t know then that I was already in trouble.
---
The first month was work. 14-hour days. The resort was bleeding money and Ethan needed me to fix the finances. Mara ran the community programs. We crossed paths in meetings.
She was good at it. Too good. She remembered every employee’s kid’s name. She stayed late to plan the hurricane relief gala.
One night at 10pm I found her in the conference room, surrounded by donation lists and cold coffee.
“You’re still here,” I said.
She looked up, startled. “Oh. Caleb. Yeah. The gala is in 2 weeks and half our sponsors pulled out.”
I dropped my laptop bag. “Let me help.”
“You don’t have to.”
“I know.”
We worked side by side until 1am. She told me about growing up in Tafuna. I told her about New York. She told me Ethan was gone 3 weeks out of every month. I didn’t ask why.
When we left, the rain was still falling.
“Thanks,” she said at the door. “For not making me do this alone.”
“Anytime,” I said.
That was the first lie.
---
By week 6, the gala was a success. $80k raised. Ethan was proud. He clapped me on the back in front of the whole staff.
“See? This is why I brought him home.”
Mara stood next to him in a blue dress. She didn’t look at me during the speech.
That night I couldn’t sleep. I kept thinking about how she bit her lip when she was stressed. How she hummed when she thought no one was listening.
My brother’s wife.
I told myself it was just admiration. She was kind. She was trapped in meetings with me. Of course I liked her.
Of course.
