Chapter 1: The Mate Who Chose Another
The sacred moonstone at the center of the ceremonial arena pulsed with silver light as hundreds of wolves gathered beneath the full moon, their voices blending into an excited murmur that echoed through the ancient pines surrounding Blackwood Pack.
Tonight.
Everything would change tonight.
Lyra Ashthorne stood at the edge of the gathering, her hands trembling despite every effort to remain composed. She smoothed the wrinkles from her simple white ceremonial dress, but it did nothing to calm the frantic beating of her heart.
Her wolf stirred restlessly.
"He's here."
The whisper brushed against her soul, filling her with equal parts hope and fear.
Across the arena, Alpha Damon Blackwood emerged from the Alpha House, dressed in black ceremonial robes embroidered with silver wolves. His commanding presence silenced the crowd instantly, and every eye followed him as he walked toward the moonstone.
He looked every bit the powerful Alpha every young wolf admired.
For three years, Lyra had loved him from afar.
Not because he was the Alpha.
But because the Moon Goddess had destined him to be her mate.
Tonight, she would finally stand beside him.
Tonight, she would become his Luna.
Or so she believed.
Elder Rowan raised his weathered staff toward the moon.
"The Moon Goddess watches over us," he declared, his voice carrying across the silent arena. "Tonight, two destined souls shall be united before their pack."
A ripple of excitement swept through the crowd.
Lyra drew a shaky breath.
When Elder Rowan called her name, she stepped forward.
Every footstep felt heavier than the last.
The silver light from the moonstone wrapped around her body like warm water, and her wolf lifted its head inside her mind with eager anticipation.
Then Damon stepped beside her.
The instant their eyes met—
A blazing silver thread exploded between them.
The mate bond.
Gasps erupted from every direction.
"It really is Lyra..."
"She's the Alpha's mate."
"I never expected that."
Lyra's heart swelled.
Tears stung her eyes.
The Moon Goddess had chosen her.
At last.
She turned to Damon with a trembling smile.
Instead of joy...
She found disgust.
His jaw tightened.
His amber eyes turned cold.
"No."
The single word sliced through the arena.
Confusion rippled across the crowd.
Damon looked directly at Elder Rowan.
"There has been a mistake."
The Elder frowned.
"The Moon Goddess does not make mistakes."
"I refuse this bond."
A stunned silence crashed over the arena.
Lyra stared at him, unable to breathe.
"What...?"
Damon's voice grew louder, carrying to every corner of the ceremonial grounds.
"I will not accept a weak omega as my Luna."
Whispers erupted instantly.
"Did he just reject her?"
"In front of everyone?"
"She's finished."
Lyra felt every stare burn into her skin.
"Damon..." she whispered, her voice breaking.
He didn't even look at her.
"My Luna must strengthen this pack."
He pointed toward the elegantly dressed woman standing among the front rows.
Selena Voss stepped forward with a triumphant smile.
"Not a girl who has never won a duel... never led warriors... and whose wolf is barely stronger than a pup."
Laughter spread through the crowd.
Each cruel laugh landed like another knife in Lyra's chest.
Selena slipped her arm around Damon's.
"Everyone already knows who deserves to stand beside our Alpha."
Several pack members nodded.
Others avoided Lyra's gaze altogether.
No one defended her.
Not one.
Lyra's breathing became ragged.
Her wolf whimpered inside her mind.
"Please..."
She wasn't begging Damon.
She was begging fate not to let this be real.
Elder Rowan slammed his staff against the stone.
"Alpha Damon! Think carefully. Rejecting a fated mate carries consequences beyond our understanding."
"I know exactly what I'm doing."
Damon's expression remained merciless.
"I, Alpha Damon Blackwood, reject Lyra Ashthorne as my mate and future Luna."
The words echoed beneath the full moon.
Pain.
Unimaginable pain.
It tore through Lyra's soul as though invisible claws were shredding the bond connecting them.
She cried out, collapsing onto the cold stone floor while agony consumed every nerve in her body.
The silver thread between them cracked.
Once.
Twice.
Then—
It shattered.
Blood trickled from the corner of Lyra's mouth.
Around her, wolves watched in horrified silence.
Some looked away.
Others smiled.
Selena's smile widened.
"Pathetic."
Lyra pressed a trembling hand against her chest, where the bond had once glowed with warmth.
Now...
There was only emptiness.
Only heartbreak.
Only unbearable loss.
Then, from somewhere far deeper than the broken bond, another presence stirred.
Ancient.
Immense.
Terrifying.
A voice unlike any she had ever heard echoed through the deepest part of her soul.
"At last..."
The whisper was soft.
Yet it carried the weight of centuries.
"The chains are broken."
A surge of unfamiliar power rippled beneath Lyra's skin, making the air around her vibrate.
The moonstone began to glow brighter.
Brighter.
Then blindingly bright.
The elders gasped.
Every wolf instinctively stepped backward.
Elder Rowan's face drained of color as he stared at Lyra.
His lips trembled.
"It... it can't be..."
Before he could finish, the moon itself seemed to tremble overhead.
And from somewhere beyond the Blackwood Pack's borders, a powerful roar split the night.
Not a wolf.
Not an Alpha.
A Lycan.
The sound carried a single, chilling promise.
Someone had awakened.
And they were coming for Lyra.
