Blurb

In the neon-drenched sub-levels of Neo-Veridia, Nova lives by one rule: keep your head down and your tech off the Syndicate's grid. But a late-night salvage run changes everything when she unearths a mysterious, unpowered metallic sphere. The moment it touches her skin, the artifact bonds to Nova, transforming her into a living conduit of raw, volatile energy. With the Syndicate's elite enforcers closing in and the strange power threatening to tear her apart from the inside out, Nova must go on the run. To survive, she’ll have to outsmart a global surveillance state, master an ability she doesn’t understand, and trust the one person she shouldn't: a cynical rebel with a dangerous past of his own.The city thinks it can contain her. They're about to learn what happens when a Nova explodes.

The Spark
The soldering iron hissed as Nova pressed it against the circuit board, a tiny bead of melted solder cooling into a dull gray seal. Around her, the basement workshop hummed with the steady, rhythmic drone of air scrubbers and the faint ticking of old clocks. It was past midnight in Neo-Veridia, a city existing in an alternate timeline where the global tech collapse of the past never ended the way history books claimed, but instead allowed a ruthless governing faction called the Syndicate to seize total control. Down here in the sub-levels, power was smuggled, scarce, and strictly illegal. Nova blew a stray lock of dark hair out of her eyes and reached into a crate of discarded tech she’d scavenged earlier that evening from the municipal recycling chutes. Her fingers brushed against something cold—not the rough texture of plastic or the familiar bite of copper wiring, but a smooth, metallic sphere that felt unusually heavy. She pulled it out into the dim glow of her desk lamp. The sphere was no bigger than an apple, its surface completely seamless, etched with faint, geometric lines that looked almost like circuit pathways. But nothing was plugged into it. There were no ports, no switches, no power cells. "Where did you come from?" she whispered, turning it over in her hands. As her thumb brushed a slight indentation near the center, the lines on the sphere flared to life. A brilliant, blinding flash of white-blue light exploded from the metal, filling the small room with an intensity that burned the back of her eyelids. Nova gasped, dropping the object, but it didn't fall. Instead, it hovered inches above the workbench, humming with a low, resonant frequency that vibrated straight through the floorboards and deep into her chest. Before she could pull back, a thin tendril of pure light shot out from the sphere, wrapping swiftly around her wrist like a glowing bracelet. A searing wave of heat—not burning, but electric, absolute power—rushed through her veins. Her vision sharpened instantly; she could see the individual dust motes floating in the air, the intricate electrical currents running through the walls, and the distant hum of security drones sweeping the streets three blocks away. Then, right on cue, a harsh, mechanical klaxon wailed outside her door. Red Alert. Unauthorized energy signature detected in Sector 4. The Syndicate had found her. Nova stared at her glowing wrist, her heart hammering against her ribs. The normal life she had tried so desperately to protect was gone. With a deep breath, she grabbed her heavy canvas pack, swept the sphere off the desk, and bolted for the back escape hatch just as the heavy metal door of her workshop began to buckle under a laser torch.
