Chapter 3

1058 Words
Sierra’s POV   What was he doing here? When did he come back to the country? Why was he home?   He almost rarely stayed in the country, staying at home is close to never. Even if he ever came back to the country, he used to stay at the hotel owned by the Cameron family business.   He is also stone-cold and never had any feelings. So it can’t be that he is here to pay condolences and grieve for mom and Sally.   What is his motive? What made him come home this time? Is he actually my unloving father Rob Evergreen or did a very similar version of him (who has feelings) replace him?   Only one way to find out …   “Dad?” I asked unsure if the man standing in front of me was actually my cold-hearted father.   “My darling daughter Sierra!” I felt chills run down my spine. This was the very first time he actually talked with anyone with that unknown strange but sweet tone.   Something’s wrong!   “Are you doing well with the recent tragic events?” He said, faking concern.   It was awfully strange! Here, another thought to rack my mind.   Why is everything becoming so confusing these days? “Aren’t you going to let your dad enter the house? I just landed from the long 12 hours flight and have jetlag. Standing outside minutes is making it worse.” He said as I moved from the way, letting him enter the house.   It was getting stranger as time passed by.   He never talked that much. His replies were always short – one word or a short and simple sentence.   I went to the kitchen to call the staff to take all the bags and luggage upstairs to Dad’s room.   When I came back Dad was sitting on the living room couch with a black file in this hand – waiting for me.   When he recognized my presence he called me, “Sierra, come here and take a look at what I have got for you”.   When I went to sit on the couch opposite him, he urged me to sit beside him and take a look at the file that he was holding rather impatiently.   It is lying if I say that I wasn’t scared of what might be inside the file because dad has been acting much sweeter than my likings, sweeter than he usually is.   It must be something awful, something I don’t want. If it wasn’t then why is he acting so strange out of nowhere? No one can change overnight, can they?   Something surely is wrong!   Slowly but nervously, I took a seat beside dad as he rushed the file into my thin, soft, and delicate hands. The look on his face was screaming urgent and something to be done as soon as possible. But I was trying to do the opposite.   I was looking for ways to delay opening the file. If it is something bad and something I don’t want to happen then I want to delay it as much as I can.   I have to do something but there was nothing to do now other than wishing that the content that this file holds isn’t something I never wished for.   “Open it!” dad rushed me but I didn’t want to.   What could be inside this mysterious file? An official contract to disown me? A contract that can remove my rights of the company so that he can have it all to himself?   After much thought, I ran my fingers on the cover of the file – taking the time to get prepared mentally for whatever the content was.   Just as I was about to flip open the cover of the black file, a voice interrupted us.   “Sir, dinner’s ready. It’s almost getting cold and also, young Miss didn’t have anything since breakfast.” Nancy interrupted.   Her interruption brought huge relief to me. I finally felt like I could breathe. I thanked God and Nancy for saving me for the time being even though I know I won’t be able to delay it anymore after dinner.   Dinner was silent as if no one else was sitting on the other end of the massive table. It was as if my dad was invisible if not for the extra sound of spoons against the plates.   Dad finished his food and left before me.   As soon as dad leaves the room, Nancy comes in and starts asking me questions, “Young Miss, Don’t you think Sir is acting unusual today?” Her voice was laced with curiosity.   “Yes Nancy, he is acting unusually strange this time. No idea why. Oh also, thanks for saving me by calling us for dinner. I really wanted to delay opening the file. I don’t want to deal with any more horrible things.” I replied.   Nancy politely replied a welcome and started picking up the used dishes - that were stained with oil and colour from the spices – to put them in the dishwasher.   I wanted to run to my bedroom and go to sleep to avoid the file. But then again I didn’t want another lecture from dad for being a lady and still running like a man.   As there was no other way of avoiding the living room, dad, and the file, I slowly walked towards the couch, thinking of something to avoid the file matter for the night so that I could get some sleep.   But I guess all the avoiding and delaying up until now will go in vain.   I walked up to dad. Using a polite and lady-like tone I tried to excuse my presence from dad.   “Dad, why don’t you go and get some sleep? I am also feeling tired after all the events from yesterday and today, I will also go to sleep early. Excuse me” I said, turning on my heels and making my way towards the stairs.   But as I said, all the effort will go to vain.   “Sierra!” he shouted at me with a raised voice. “How much more avoiding do you think you can do? Come back here right this instant or experience hell for the rest of your life!”   I took a deep breath and turned around knowing how dangerous my dad can get. Trying to finish this nightmare, I grabbed hold of the file and opened it.   Looking at the contents inside, I was confused until I flipped the page and tears collected at the edge of my eyes. He can’t possibly be doing this…
