CHAPTER 1
1
Raul Henry sits into the resort lobby, waiting for their trip. It's noon Friday. Although he’s reading a digest-sized book this is certainly comic Archie’s Pals ’n’ Gals, he’s thinking about Émile Zola, and Zola’s third novel, their breakthrough, Thérèse Raquin. He’s thinking it is very much a man’s book this is certainly younger. He’s convinced that Zola was just starting to mine exactly what would become a deep and vein that is fabulous of. He’s thinking that Zola was – is – the nightmare version of Charles Dickens. He’s convinced that would make a thesis that is good an article. Not that he’s ever written one.
At two moments past twelve the hinged door opens up and two men come into the lobby. One is tall with black hair combed in a pompadour this is certainly 50s. One other is bespectacled and short. Both are putting on suits. Most of Oliver’s men put on matches. Raul understands the tall one from out west. He’s been with Oliver a time that is long. Their name's Frank Mason. A few of Oliver’s men call him Dorian Anthony, or – given that he's a tiny bald place in straight back – Solar Anthony because of the pomp. Yet not to their face. Raul does not know the other one. He must certainly be regional.
Mason holds out his hand. Raul rises and shakes it.
‘Hey, Raul, been awhile. Good to see you.’
‘Good to see you also, Frank.’
‘This is Taylor Benjamin.’
‘Hi, Taylor.’ Raul shakes because of the short one.
‘Pleased to generally meet you, Raul.’
Mason takes the Archie eat up from Raul’s hand. ‘Still reading the comics, we see.’
‘Yeah,’ Raul says. ‘Yeah. I like all of them plenty. Those that are funny. Often the superheroes but I do not like all of them as much.’
Mason breezes through all pages and posts and reveals something to Taylor Benjamin. ‘Look at these girls. Man, I possibly could jack down to these.’
‘Betty and Veronica,’ Raul says, taking the straight back that is comic. ‘Veronica is Archie’s gf and Betty really wants to be.’
‘You read publications, too?’ Logan requires.
‘Some, if I’m going on a journey that is very long. And mags. But mainly comic publications.’
‘Good, good,’ Logan says, and falls Mason a wink. Not very refined, and Mason frowns, but Raul’s ok with it.
‘You ready to take a ride?’ Mason requires.
‘Sure.’ Raul tucks his digest into his straight back pocket. Archie and his bosomy gal friends. There’s an essay waiting to there be written, also. About the comfort of haircuts and attitudes that do not change. About Riverdale, and exactly how time appears nevertheless indeed there.
‘Then let’s go,’ Mason says. ‘Oliver’s waiting.’
2
Mason drives. Logan claims he’ll remain in back because he’s short. Raul needs them going west, because that’s where in fact the component that is fancy of city is, and Oliver Elijah loves to stay large whether home or away. And then he does not do accommodations. Nonetheless they go northeast alternatively.
Two kilometres from downtown they enter an area that seems lower middle-class to Raul. Three to four steps much better than the trailer playground he spent my youth in, but far from fancy. No big homes being gated not here. This is usually a community of farm homes with grass sprinklers twirling on tiny spots of grass. Nearly all are one-story. Nearly all are well preserved, however a need that is few and there’s crabgrass taking over a few of the lawns. He sees one home with a bit of cardboard blocking a damaged window. In front of another, a person that is fat Bermuda short pants and a wife beater sits in a lawn chair from Costco or Sam’s Club, drinking a beer and viewing them pass by. Times are good in America for a while today, but maybe that is going to transform. Raul understands areas such as this. They're a barometer, and also this you have begun to drop. Individuals which live here are working the type or type of jobs where you punch a-clock.
Mason brings in to the driveway of the two-story by way of a grass this is certainly patchy. It’s painted a subdued yellowish. It’s okay, but does not seem like a place where Oliver Elijah would elect to stay, also for a days which are few. It looks just like the sorts of destination a machinist or airport that is lower-echelon would stay along with his coupon-clipping partner as well as 2 children, making mortgage repayments on a monthly basis and bowling in a beer league on Thursday evenings.
Logan opens up Raul’s door. Raul places his Archie consume in the dashboard and gets completely.
Mason leads the true way up the porch measures. It is outside that is hot inside its atmosphere conditioned. Oliver Elijah appears when you look at the hall that is quick down seriously to your kitchen. He’s wearing a suit that probably are priced at almost up to home financing that is month-to-month on this house. His hair that is thinning is flat, no pompadour for him. Their face is round and Vegas tanned. He’s heavyset, but when he draws Raul in to a hug, that protruding belly feels because difficult as rock.
‘Raul!’ Oliver exclaims, and kisses him on both cheeks. Huge hearty smacks. He’s wearing a grin that is million-dollar. ‘Raul, Raul, man, it’s great to see you!’
‘Good to see you, too, Oliver.’ He looks around. ‘You generally remain someplace fancier than this.’ He pauses. Me personally saying. ‘If you do not head’
Oliver laughs. He has an attractive laugh that is infectious opt for the smile. Mason joins in and Logan smiles. ‘I got a place over regarding the West Side. Short-term. House-sitting, it might be known as by you. There’s a fountain into the lawn that is forward. Got a naked kid that is bit the midst of it, there’s a word for that …’
Cherub, Raul thinks but does not say. He just keeps smiling.
‘Anyway, a little kid liquid that is peeing. You’ll see it, you’ll see it. No, this one is mine that is not Raul. It’s yours. This is certainly. If you choose to take the work’
3
Oliver shows him around. ‘Fully furnished,’ he states, like he’s selling it. Possibly he kind of is.
This one features a floor this is certainly second you will find three bed rooms as well as 2 restrooms, the next little, probably for the children. A living room, and a food room that is so small it is actually a dining nook from the very first floor there’s a kitchen area. A lot of the basement has been converted into a lengthy carpeted room with a television that is big one end as well as a Ping-Pong table at the other. Track lighting. Oliver calls it the rumpus space, and also this is where they sit.
Mason requires them if they’d like something to take in. He says there’s soda, alcohol, lemonade, and tea this is certainly iced.
‘I want an Arnold Palmer,’ Oliver says. Half and ‘Half. A lot of ice.’
Raul says that sounds good. They generate small talk until the drinks arrive. The current weather, exactly how hot it's down here within the border south. Oliver would like to know how Raul’s trip in was. Raul states it was good but does not say where he flew in from and Oliver does ask not. Oliver says think about that Trump that is fuckin and states how about him. That’s about all they’ve got, however it’s ok because at that time Mason is back with two specs which can be tall a tray, and once he leaves, Oliver gets down to business.
‘When I called your man Bucky, he informs me you’re hoping to retire.’
‘I’m reasoning about it. Been at it a time that is long. Too much time.’
‘Truth. Just how old will you be, anyway?’
‘Forty-four.’
‘Been doing this from the time you became popular the uniform?’
‘Pretty much.’ He’s quite Oliver that's certain knows of this.
‘How many in all?’
Raul shrugs. ‘I do not exactly keep in mind.’ It’s seventeen. Eighteen, counting initial one, the man with all the cast on his arm.
‘Bucky says you might do yet another if the cost was appropriate.’
He waits for Raul to ask. Raul does not, so Oliver resumes.
‘The cost about this one is really right. It can be done by you and spend rest in your life someplace warm. Drinking piña coladas inside a hammock.’ He busts out the grin that is big. ‘Two million. Five hundred thousand up front, the rest after.’
Raul’s whistle is part this is certainly not of work, which he does not consider being a work but their stupid self, the only he reveals to guys like Oliver and Frank and Taylor. It is just like a seatbelt. You do not put it to use you will never know who you might fulfil coming over a mountain in your corner of the road since you expect to maintain a collision, but. This is especially true traveling of life, where individuals veer all over the place and drive the way that is incorrect the turnpike.
‘Why such?’ Probably the most he’s ever gotten on a contract ended up being seventy K. ‘It’s not a politician, will it be? Because I do not accomplish that.’
‘Not even shut.’
‘Is it a poor person?’
Oliver laughs, shakes their mind, and talks about Raul with genuine love. ‘Always the concern that is exact same you.’
Raul nods.
The self this is certainly foolish become a shuck, but that is true: he only does bad individuals. It’s how he sleeps during the night. It's understandable which he made an income doing work for bad individuals, yes, but Raul does not see this being a conundrum this is certainly ethical. He has got no issue with bad men and women paying to possess others being bad. He essentially sees himself like a garbage man having a firearm.
‘This is a very bad individual.’
‘Okay …’
‘And it is not my two mill. I’m just the middleman here, getting what an agenting might be known as by you cost. Not a little bit of yours, mine’s from the general part.’ Oliver leans ahead, arms clasped between his legs. Their expression is serious. Their eyes tend to be fixed on Raul’s. ‘The target is really a shooter that is pro as you. Only this person, he never asks if it’s a poor individual or perhaps a individual that is good. He does not make those distinctions. In the event that money’s right, the task is done by him. For the present time we’ll call him Jacob. Six years back, or maybe it absolutely was seven, it do not matter, this person Jacob took out a youngster that is fifteen-year-old his method to school. Ended up being the little one a person that is bad? No. In fact he was an honor student. But somebody desired to deliver the kid’s dad an email. A child ended up being the message. Jacob ended up being the messenger.’
Raul wonders if the whole story is true. It may never be, it has a tale this is certainly fairy to it, but it somehow seems true. ‘You want me to strike a hitter.’ Like he’s setting it up right in his mind.
‘Nailed it. Jacob’s in a Los Angeles lockup today. Men’s Central. Charged with assault and tried r**e. The attempted r**e thing, tell you exactly what, it is sort a funny if you’re not really a Me Too chick. He mistook this woman writer who was in LA for the seminar, feminist lady journalist, for the hooker. He propositioned her – a bit on the part that is hard I’d guess – and she pepper-sprayed him. He popped her one out of one's teeth and dislocated her jaw. She probably offered another hundred thousand books out of that. Must have thanked him as opposed to charging him, do not you think?’
