The knocks on the door were like cold raindrops, hammering steadily and rhythmically against Lin Yue's heart. She took a deep breath, forced herself to calm down, and reached out to pull the bolt.
Standing outside was neither Sofia nor Leah, but the always stern and meticulous butler, Hoss. He held a silver tray, upon which lay a letter sealed with black wax. The wax was branded with Prince Vandjo's unique bat emblem, entwined with thorns.
"Miss Lin Yue," Butler Hoss's voice, as flat as his expression, said, "His Majesty has returned tonight. He requests that you proceed to the bloodline laboratory in the west tower immediately." His gaze lingered briefly on the dusty hem of her clothes, but he asked no questions.
What was to come finally came. Vandjo had not only returned, but he had clearly known—or perhaps anticipated—that she would not remain content in her room tonight. The West Tower Laboratory… the name made her heart tighten, recalling Sophia's mention of research on her bloodline.
"Now?" Lin Yue's voice was slightly dry.
"Yes, immediately." Hoss leaned over, offering guidance, brooking no refusal.
Lin Yue followed him silently through the still-silent castle corridors. Unlike the previous paths to the study or dining room, this time they headed deeper into the castle, into a more secluded area. The torches on the walls dwindled, the light dimmed, and the air grew increasingly chilly, carrying a strange scent of herbs and some kind of... ancient dust. This place seemed cut off from the rest of the castle's opulence, shrouded in a scholarly coldness and mystery.
The West Tower Laboratory was a domed stone chamber, somewhat similar to the abandoned "Watchroom," but now it was brightly lit. Instead of flickering torches, the walls were inlaid with moonstone, emitting a soft white glow. The room was filled with bizarre instruments: crystal flasks filled with strangely colored liquids, massive brass devices crammed with gears and tubes, and the walls were covered with scrolls depicting intricate astrological charts, bloodline diagrams, and ancient runes. The energy fluctuations that permeated the air made the hairs on Lin Yue's arms stand on end.
Prince Vanzo stood in the center of the room, his back to her, looking down at a complex three-dimensional diagram composed of pure energy, suspended in mid-air. The diagram was a constantly shifting dark red, as if living blood flowed through it. He had traded his military uniform for a simple black silk robe, his silver hair loose. He lacked his usual imposing aura, but instead exuded the focus and... danger of a researcher.
At the sound of footsteps, he didn't turn around, but spoke softly, his voice echoing faintly in the empty stone chamber: "It seems that even in my absence, the castle can still provide you with plenty of... 'exploratory' pleasure."
Lin Yue's heart sank. He understood. He knew where she had gone.
She didn't try to argue; that was pointless in front of the one in absolute control. She simply stood there in silence, feeling the icy chill of the stone chamber creep up through the soles of her shoes.
Fan Zhuo finally turned. His bloodshot eyes, under the cold light of the laboratory, seemed exceptionally deep, like an abyss that swallowed all light. His gaze fell on her, no longer the teasing or oppression he'd felt at dinner, but a pure, almost ruthless scrutiny, as if assessing an extremely special and valuable experimental subject.
"Sophia reported her...discovery to me." He slowly approached, his fingertips tracing the energy map in the air, causing ripples to form. "About that sculpture, about that covenant. She's very perceptive, always noticing details that others overlook."
He stopped in front of Lin Yue, close enough that she could sense a different kind of icy aura emanating from him, distinct from the chill of the stone chamber. "But what she doesn't know is that the power of the covenant hasn't completely vanished. It's merely dormant, awaiting the right... key." His gaze, as if it were real, focused on her. "And your blood, Lin Yue, is the first 'key' I've sensed in centuries that might resonate with it."
Lin Yue looked up sharply, meeting his gaze. "So, to you, I've always been just an experiment? A tool that might rekindle the covenant?"
"Tool?" Fan Zhuo raised an eyebrow, as if finding the word amusing. "No. Tools can be replaced. But variables are unique." He raised his hand, pointing to a stone platform engraved with ancient runes at the side of the room. In the center of the platform was a shallow groove, just large enough to accommodate a palm. "You are the variable. Your bloodline, your very presence, has cast a stone into the long river of destiny. And I, want to see where these ripples will ultimately spread."
He gestured for her to approach the platform. "Tonight, we will conduct our first official 'resonance test.' I need more precise data to determine the origin of your bloodline and the strength of its connection to the power of the Covenant."
Lin Yue stared at the rune-covered stone platform, her heart filled with resistance and fear. It was like an altar. Placing her hand upon it would mean completely handing over her greatest secret, a power beyond her control, to this most dangerous enemy.
"What if I refuse?" she heard herself ask, her voice trembling slightly.
Fan Zhuo's eyes remained unchanged, as if he had anticipated her reaction. "You can refuse. It's your choice," he said flatly. "But refusing means you've given up the opportunity to discover your own truth, and it also means you've lost most of your value to me. And you can imagine the fate of a variable that loses its value in a hostile castle."
He wasn't threatening, merely stating a cold fact. Staying in the castle would come at a price; leaving (or being abandoned) would expose her to the wrath of Leah and the other vampires. There was no escape.
A feeling of humiliation and powerlessness washed over her, but deeper still lay a longing for the truth, a stubborn refusal to be manipulated by her fate. She remembered the howling werewolf statue, and the faint glimmer of hope in Sophia's eyes. Perhaps her bloodline truly was more than just a curse.
She took a deep breath, as if to suppress all fear and hesitation, and then stepped towards the stone platform. The touch of the cold stone surface pierced through her clothing. She raised her hand, and under Van Zhuo's piercing gaze, she slowly pressed her right hand into the groove.
The runes on the edge of the groove instantly illuminated, emitting a faint blue light. Like a living being, they coiled around her wrist, bringing a strange, both cold and burning sensation. The stone platform vibrated slightly, and the dark red energy pattern in the air suddenly brightened. A subtle, silvery-white stream of light began to move restlessly within it, as if attracted by something.
A barely perceptible flicker of emotion flashed across Fan Zhuo's eyes, the pure concentration and excitement of a researcher witnessing anticipated results.
However, just as Lin Yue was trying to adjust to the strange sensation evoked by the rune, the heavy door of the laboratory was violently flung open from the outside with such force that it clashed with a dull thud against the stone wall.
Leah stood in the doorway, her scarlet dress ablaze. Her beautiful face was now filled with undisguised anger and hatred, her gaze like a poisonous dagger piercing the two men at the stone platform.
"Your Majesty!" Her voice was sharp with emotion. "I implore you to halt this dangerous experiment immediately! This vile half-blood, her bloodline is filled with uncontrollable filth! You cannot put the safety of the entire vampire race at risk for the sake of a vain legend!"
Her sudden intrusion shattered the solemn atmosphere of the laboratory, interrupting the ongoing test. The faint blue rune wrapped around Lin Yue's wrist flickered slightly, becoming unstable.
Fan Zhuo slowly turned to face Leah, his face expressionless, yet the air around them seemed to drop to freezing point.
Lin Yue's heart clung to her chest. Was the interruption of the test a blessing or a curse? And where would Leah's fierce opposition lead this already complex situation?
